+ 6 moreThe project is still not complete after 7 months. Initially, Keith was not the one holding up the project; the electrician was especially slow and it took almost 3 weeks for the inspections to be coordinated with the city for temporary power. In mid-Nov Keith basically stopped working on the project and lied about being out of town until Feb. He still hasn't finished.
Description of Work: UPDATE: Keith Jackson is a first class con man that you can't help but like. Stay away - he is bad news!! He is not honest and does not have the experience he claims. He starts off strong, says all the right things, gets you to trust him that is he doing the job correctly, but then cheats you. He refinished my wood floors, but said they were very difficult because they were old and beaten up. They were a little sticky when he was done, no sheen, and very dark. I decided to have them redone by Mike at Planet Hardwood, who did a great job. Mike said Keith used the wrong stain, and did not even sand them correctly (down to the original 70 yr old wax job). After Planet Hardwood, the floors are totally different and beautiful. Yesterday I found out that Keith did not insulate the ceiling of the upstairs. He had pulled out the old insultation becasue it was "burned up;" but he never replaced it. He had rolls of insulation up there that I saw, but in reality he put up the sheet rock and did not put insulation behind it. I still need estimates on fixing that. UPDATE: I was finally able to contact him. He responds to threats of prosecution. He doesn't know what happened with the insulation; he "went to a doctor's appointment" that day. He said he would fix it at his own expense on 8/9 feb, but did not. He called the next morning and couldn't do it because something came up, but would do it 11 Feb. On 11 feb he had to go "talk to the IRS who had frozen his accounts, but promised to have it finished by Fri, 15 Feb." On 12/13 still with IRS, but would come on 14 Feb afternoon. No show again. When I called he said he would do it Fri/Sat. He has endless excuses. He also filled in some basement stairs. He said he was a structural engineer and knew how to do it. He didn't do it correctly. He caused a drainage/water problem that never existed in the 70 years prior. I had to pay $4500 for AFS to waterproof the basement. Keith Jackson is the proprietor of this company. He says he is a licensed general contractor with extensive experience. He has very good design ideas and makes suggestions as he sees things. The project included complete remodel of entire property; demolition and tear out and replacement of all pluming, electrical, old coal heating system, old insulation, rotten floors, half bath and old kitchen. Replaced roof, installed custom cabinets, kitchen island, built laundry room, created a glamour bath, refinished all original wood floors, smoothed the 70 yr old walls and ceilings, and stoned the fireplace. Keith also suggested widening the entrances between living room/dining and dining room/kithen and making them into arches to create a more open feeling. He carried the arch theme throughout the house. He also suggested creating a trey ceiling in the kitchen to give it a unique look, which is beautiful. He also waterproofed the "man cave" building in the back yard, which is big enough for 3 cars or a large workshop. When my friend when inside, she commented that it was "bone dry" inside. It was leaking before Keith worked on it. The inspectors said the mancave exterior walls needed plywood added to them toward the bottom. When Keith started working on them, he realized the plywood was rotten. He could have just replaced the bottom section so it looked OK cosmetically, but he pulled off all the old plywood and replaced it with high quality new plywood. He could have left it alone, but he covered the plywood in ice and water shield so that the walls would not ever rot and would stay dry. UPDATE: After the termite inspector came yesterday (2/14/13), I am wondering if he actually installed the new plywood or just put the ice and water shield over the old plywood and charged me anyway. Keith reconverted the workshop garage into a finished garage with an electric door. The door had to be custom made because the garage was built when cars were much smaller. He also replaced the old wire supports on the front porch with square columns to give the house more curb appeal. The cement front porch was also tiled with slate. At first he did not cut corners and did what should be done to an owner's house. For example, the roof had a slight sag due to old boards used in the knee wall. He replaced the entire knee wall with new boards to make it right, even though I never would have known the difference. He pulled out the old house roof insulation because it was basically "burned up" after 50 yrs in the sun and a leaking roof and replaced it with a higher than required grade insulation. UPDATE He never actually replaced the insulation. He had rolls of insulation upstairs, but replaced the drywall with NO insulation. The buyer's inspector caught it. Now i am trying to get it redone. He kept the job site neat and clean the entire time; no nails, trash, or dirty junk lying around. He does start very early (sometimes 0600) and may work past 6pm depending on what he is working on.
