Bruce and his team were great. They were very professional, always responsive, and just really great people. They were respectful of our home and careful with our special concerns (cats in the house). Bruce gave us a lot of information about technical aspects of the work, and he seemed very thorough.

Description of Work: They retrofitted our house. We got their name highly recommended from a couple of other retrofitting companies. I felt they were honest and sincere when interacting with us. It's hard to know the quality of the retrofit until something happened. They were highly regarded by the other two contractors that I contacted, but they couldn't perform the work for us for various reasons and highly recommended a-ffix to us.

Bruce was very professional and easy to work with, all work was performed as described and on time. He was also very open to us doing some of the work ourselves, providing different estimates based on how much we wanted to take on.

He showed up on time and thoroughly looked all around the foundation outside and inside the house. He also went into the attic crawl space and looked for any signs of water damage or other possible cause of the cracks. There was no sign of water entering via the roof or the foundation settling. He was the third contractor I had called out to give an opinion - the other two being roofers, as I had initially suspected a leaky roof. I had worked with Bruce many years back when I was looking into having my own house retrofit. I remembered him as very knowledgeable and pleasant to work with and my memory proved true. He did not talk me into unecessary work and provided suggestions about why the cracks appeared and an appropriate course of action, taking into consideration that my parents are very elderly and any work on their house can be upsetting to them. I would definitely recommend Bruce to others and hire him again for any questions about retrofitting and foundations in general.
Description of Work: I asked Bruce to come out to inspect my parents house for any signs of their house settling ( to determine cause of cracks forming on their living room ceiling).

I was very satisfied with work performed by Bruce and lead worker, Martin. Kept me informed as work progressed and made sure I fully understood process. A few minor change orders were required and they were fully discussed and approved before work progressed. Made adjustment in demo process to meet my desires to re install paneling. Project took nine days to complete and both the quality of the work and project clean up was excellent. I was very pleased that work could be accomplished before the holidays. Coordination with City inspectors was good and no problems encountered. AFFIX was not the low or high bidder on the job but I felt confident in their expertise and they delivered a quality product.

Called to get a quote initially around June, Bruce was quick to respond and schedule the quote. He provided a general estimate but a bid fee of $95 was required for a detailed quote. We decided to move forward with the quote and the cost for engineering (as our house did not meet the requirements for the standard City of Seattle plan). Cost was a bit higher than we had anticipated so we held onto the quote for awhile trying to figure out if we could do parts of the work ourselves. Ultimately decided to go forward with the work and between our summer travel and Bruce's other jobs, we ended up having to schedule out several months to September. The job itself also took a bit longer than expected, initially we planned for 2 weeks but it ended up going almost 4 weeks. Bruce was very responsive to inquiries on project status and made sure to stop by several times when we were available to answer our questions. A few issues came up during the retrofit including discovering a structural beam that was not adequately supported and some wood framing that was water damaged. Each ended up being a small additional cost and each were provided in change orders for us to approve before they did the additional work. All the work was completed to our satisfaction and we feel a lot more confident about the stability of our home! Overall a good experience and I would recommend them others considering retrofit projects.
Description of Work: Earthquake retrofit including engineering plan, apply for permit, tear out of existing drywall, install brackets/bolts/plywood, water heater bracing, additional support beam, auto shut-off valve for gas, and restoration of walls w/ insulation.

Description of Work: I hired A-FFIX to complete a retrofitting job done by another company that did not meet my standards (nor the standards of the city inspector). Bruce Schoonmaker is the owner of the company. I got his name from someone closely associated with Project Impact. Project Impact is a Seattle plan to aid homeowners in retrofitting homes. It was not easy running down someone associated with Project Impact via telephone and /or email but I did find a resource who led me to Bruce. The city offers classes through the library system for the general public interested in residential retrofitting which is one way to find people associated with the project. A list of trained hireable people is available on a city web page. I found the first retrofitting company I used there, so.... Schoonmaker came highly recommended. He is thorough, professional, and genuine. He was even honest enough to tell me it would probably be in my financial interest to allow the first guys to finish the job per request after a failed inspection but I did not want them back. He was kind enough to say he was sorry he was having to do this for me as I wrote him a check. All I could say in return was I was glad it was him I found to help me. He has been in the business for 11 years and currently has 2 other employees. As I write this review he is only half way through the 2 days required by contract. I have so much faith in his work that I am signing him off here as awesome. I required my first retrofitter to include a clause stating I would not pay the remaining percentage due after completion until the work passed inspection. After meeting Bruce and knowing where I got his name and crawling around with him in the crawl space I asked for no such clause to be added to the contract. I almost feel guilty givng him a B for responsiveness. It's a B plus. He was a little slow to respond at times (not vital times) via email etc but he was under the weather etc. He has done everything he said he woud, showed up on time, and stuck to every word. Just a tad slow at times in getting back to me but always with an apology and an explanation. Do not let this throw you off if you have a list of candidates ! When he does respond he answers everything you ask him. Some people pick and choose which ?s they address. My only regret is that I did not find him first!

I sent an e-mail initially and after not getting a response for two weeks, I rang them. They were very apologetic and very responsive from there on, so my e-mail probably got lost. Further communication by e-mail and phone was not problem. They got somebody to check the thickness of my pipe, and arranged installation within a week. The plumber showed up on time, installed the valve without major issues and even painted my rusty gas pipe. Altogether a good experience. Their website is very interesting.

Bruce came up with an innovative way to get into one side of the basement from under the porch, which meant we didn't have to tear up the finished room in the basement. His price was only slightly higher than his competitor's, which I suspected probably would have gone up to the same figure due to site conditions. Both companies would have done a good job, but Bruce's references gave glowing reports of his character, integrity and workmanship. He was there on the site every day checking on the work, and sometimes working along with the crew. They were conscientious about restoring the closets and paneling in the bathroom to as close to their previous condition as possible, and cleaned up after themselves every day.
Description of Work: Earthquake retrofit, gas shutoff valve. Subcontracted structural engineering since our basement had some odd features that meant we couldn't use the City's standard plan set. A-FFIX took care of getting the engineering, preparing the plans, and getting the permit and inspections from the City.
