From the moment I sat down in the class, the information that was flowing from Amy was unforgettable. My goal is to have a non-medicated birth, and Amy provided so many tips and preparations for my husband and I to take into account. I thought I had read all the books, but nothing takes the place of the 25+ years of experience Amy is bringing to the table. I am looking forward to her advanced class and to utilizing her Doula skills for the delivery of our first born. Amy has great insight into achieving a non medicated birth and is very warm, friendly, and full of guidance. I could not have imagined getting ready for the birth of our daughter without this class!
Description of Work
Amy hosted her self created "weekend madness" child birth class in Manassas, VA. The class consisted of a Friday night and Saturday morning/afternoon class (12 hour class). Highly efficient class, instead of the "meet every Thursday" night type class, this gave my husband and I all the info we could ever want to fit our schedule.

We had about ten couples in the class, and everyone found answers to their many questions about labor, delivery and postpartum. The class was very interactive. My husband really enjoyed it because it wasn't only geared towards the women! He and I feel very prepared for what lies ahead. I can't thank Amy enough for her encouragement and answers to my questions. I can tell she loves birth and babies, and has a passion for teaching others about the miracle of life. I also feel very secure and comfortable with my husband coaching me through labor now!

Amazing. She is friendly, funny, interactive, full of 25 years of experience. Her session made my wife and i feel completely prepared for the labor and delivery of our baby. We took her 101 class, and are also signed up to take her advanced class later this summer. She covered soapy different aspects of childbirth and addressed every one of our concerns. She is well worth every penny and every minute of your time.
Description of Work
My wife and I are first time parents and we used Amy for a birthing class to learn about labor, delivery, pregnancy. We were very impressed with the amount of information we learned in a day and a half session. I would recommend her to anyone interested in understanding the ins and outs of pregnancy.

From the start, Amy was an absolute pleasure to work with. We had an initial meeting with her to make sure we'd be a and quot;good fitand quot;, and it was clear that she was wonderful--enthusiastic, warm, and extremely knowledgeable. Amy was an excellent resource to me throughout my pregnancy. I often called her to seek advice and ask questions (of which I had many, as this was my first pregnancy). Amy was always happy to talk to me, at length, and even came to my house in the days before I gave birth to help make sure the baby was in a and quot;good positionand quot;. Amy was always upfront about issues that were outside of her area of expertise and knowledge base, and would often get back to me after doing more research herself. On the day of our daughter's birth, Amy's role was absolutely invaluable. Not only did she help with pain management techniques and helping to talk me through contractions, she was able to help guide my husband so that he could be as and quot;usefuland quot; and involved in coaching me. Additionally, since I was in a situation in which I had to deviate from my birth plan, Amy helped my husband and I to talk through the pros and cons of every decision we had to make in the hospital. She never once tried to sway us, but simply offered her thoughts and opinions, and made sure that we understood what the doctors and nurses were telling us. It was so reassuring to know that we had a strong advocate throughout the process. In addition to using Amy as our labor doula, we attended both her basic and advanced birth classes. We really enjoyed them. We learned a ton, and they were hands-on and interactive, which made it easy to remain engaged and retain the information. We would not hesitate for a second to recommend Amy to anyone...she was so wonderful...she will probably be the first person we call if and when I find out I am pregnant again! We are so grateful to have found her!

Bottom line - we don't feel like we could have made it through our labor and delivery without Amy. In the months leading up to my delivery, Amy provided constant support and guidance. We were planning a natural birth, and she suggested many other resources to help us achieve our goals. We also took her Preparation for Childbirth Class, and I really liked that she offered information that supplemented what we learned in our Hypnobirthing class. We learned how to write a birth plan, additional practice and preparation exercises, and a list of what to pack for the hospital. Unfortunately, we ended up needing an induction, and 18 hours of labor led to a C-section. Amy supported us through the entire induction process, and partnered with my husband to guide and coach me while we were in active labor. She also helped guide us in our conversations with the hospital staff and doctors, and suggested questions I may want to ask that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. When we ultimately learned we would need a cesarean, Amy stayed with my husband and communicated to him what was going on. We were in the hospital for 48 hours leading up to our son's delivery, and Amy was there with us for much of that time. We saw many nurse and doctor shifts come and go, but we felt secure in the fact that she was a constant source of support for us. Amy also followed up with us after our delivery to check in and see how we were settling in. I had a difficult time coming to terms with the fact that our labor did not go as intended, and actually veered so far off course. But talking to Amy about this after the fact was incredibly healing for me and my husband. Amy's positivity and presence are a gift to pregnant women and their partners. I whole heartedly recommend her and feel so grateful that she was able to help us bring our son into the world.
Description of Work
We were committed to a natural birth, but felt more comfortable having our first child in a hospital setting. At the same time, we felt like we wanted a constant source of support for us who would help guide us during pregnancy, labor, and delivery from start to finish. Since that's not guaranteed in a hospital/OBGYN setting (depending on who is on call and how long your labor is), we wanted to hire a doula. Amy Bookwalter came very highly recommended by a friend of ours, and we're so grateful we found her and she was available.
