(CAUTION) I would absolutely not engage this contractor unless you hire a professional Project Manager to develop specific scope of work listing all services, material quality, manage progress payments and provide disciplined accountability. Do not pay for anything in advance.
Job one rating B overall: New metal roof and complete exerior house paint for my primary residence. My wife is a Paralegal and served as project manager. This project had some manageable bumps but overall went fairly well as everything was documented and she only paid for work done. Only negatives would be the time invested in managing the contractor and having to constantly demand quality materials.
Job Two worse than an F rating: New composition roof, painting, bathroom remodel and exterior storm door installation for my elderly parents' home. This project is a disaster. We did not have the time to manage the contracter so my Mother tried on her own. She is a sweet trusting soul that paid in advance when requested and did not demand changes and agreements in writing nor demanded detailed scope of work. New roofing materials were absolute minimum quality, New roof leaked because he did not replace roof vents or finish out the job. On bathroom remodel, old fixtures were reused and gaskets not replaced. Upstairs bathroom tub leaked through downstairs ceiling. Separate contractor hired to fix that and other minor issues. New carpet was stained from workers tracking in mud. New doors paid for were not installed. Lawnmowers turned up missing day after contractor had payday conflict with his workers on site. My mother and I have numerous verbal promises he will make things right over the last few months.
Contractor is capable of good work and can be a good guy. He just needs to keep his word, be responsive and demostrate integrity to make this right without having to threaten elevating this via legal remedy which is next step.
Update 10/21/2014: After phone calls by myself, promises to make it right and no shows by contractor, I am updating my review. I would not recommend this contractor. Anyone who can live with themselves after taking advantage of an elderly couple, I simply can not endorse and feel other should be aware of the facts.
We have started another large interior upgrade on primary residence and hired a local contractor recommended on Angie's list this time. Wish we would have researched Angies list the first time. Lesson learned
