Jiffy Lube failed my Acura coupe for windshield wipers, based on very slight streaking while the washers were turned on. They claimed that any streaking, however slight, was mandatory basis for failing the inspection. I do not recall exactly what Jiffy Lube quoted as price for new wiper inserts, but it was a little over $40, which I knew to be totally unreasonable. I attempted to reason first with the inspector, then with the (apparent) supervisor, both of whom totally insisted the car MUST be failed. I immediately attempted to call the Jiffy Lube "Problem Line" posted at the store [(800) 344-6933], but got a recording saying that no-one was available, and asked me to leave a voice-mail, which I did, explaining the situation. I also rated this Jiffy Lube Service as "Poor" where requested on their Invoice form. As of today, eight days later, I have had no response whatever from Jiffy Lube to either my call or my rating of their service, which is why I'm grading them "F" for non-responsiveness. Having no other alternative, I accepted the "FAIL" result, which meant I would have to return to that Jiffy Lube store for a re-inspection of the wiper blades. Accordingly, I took the car to my Acura dealer, who replaced both wipers with new [Acura factory brand], wiper inserts. The dealer charged a total of $15.14 for the job, including parts, labor, and taxes (and who also washed and vacuumed my car at no cost). Thus, Jiffy Lube's price was about 264% of the dealer price, which I consider absolutely unreasonable and unconscionable. It is my opinion that, as a Texas Inspection Station, Jiffy Lube attempted to take advantage of the situation by: (a). Failing the car because of a trivial amount of streaking which wasn't sufficient to be a safety problem (I have driven the car in recent heavy rains, with no vision problems, and (b). Attempting to take advantage of their authority to "fail" my car by charging an exorbitant price for very inexpensive items. (I think they thought I'd just accept the price rather than go to the inconvenience of getting the new inserts and having to return for re-inspection.) When I returned the car for the re-inspection, I had the same inspector, and showed him the receipt from my Acura dealer, showing the above comparison of their price, versus Jiffy Lube's quote. He said that he was sorry, but that he was only following company policies and instructions; and that he didn't set the prices. I'm 75 years old, and have been having Texas State Safety Inspections since they began in about 1950. This is not only the only time in 60 years that I have ever had a car "Failed", but it was also the worst experience I have ever had from an auto service firm.
