The process of purchasing and installing the new furnace was fine. All appointments were punctual. The salesman only offered 2 options - the highest efficiency furnace, and also an 80% efficiency. He should have offered a middle option, but in the end I was comfortable with the 98% Carrier furnace. The price quoted included an "August discount", which made Jacobs' quote much more competitive than the other company I looked at. My main complaint was that the demolition and install was very messy, and there was no protection of the surrounding area when they removed the old furnace. I found black fingerprints upstairs in the bathroom as well, and was cleaning up soot from the old oil furnace for weeks. They took responsibility for this, cleaned up some of it the 2nd day, and compensated me with free service in the future. However, because of this rather large issue, I can't give them an A. The installation was timely and fast, completed ahead of schedule. I wish there had been a little more continuity between the initial salesman, the job lead, the scheduler, and the actual installer. At each step, in all of my interactions they were prompt, professional and helpful. The pre-installation walkthrough was thorough (with the exception of protection of the surrounding area) and really helpful. The furnace has been in for nearly a month, and so far it has been great, so I'm happy with the product they delivered.
Description of Work: They removed an old oil furnace and installed a new natural gas furnace.

They finished the work in one day and they cleaned up well. The quality of work and installation seems great, but I'm not sure if I'm happy with the type of furnace. That's more of a reflection of the furnace not the company though. We are still trying to work this out with the company.

Service man was very friendly and prompt. Cleanup was messy. Neither item passed the county inspector. I had to call Jacob's twice to ask them to come out and fix the work so that it will pass inspection. Still waiting to hear back from them. Not impressed with their follow through.

James LeBreton came out to look at the existing system, he was on time, answered my husbands questions and took his time taking measurements. Gave my husband a hand written quote with ballpark numbers for top end, 2nd best and 3rd best options for both the water heater and furnace. My husbanded stated that he seemed disappointed that we were talking with other HVAC companies and was a bit pushy in wanting to setup the next appointment. James wanted to finalize the quote with both my husband and myself present. We setup an appointment in the evening a couple of weeks out. On the day of the appointment my husbands work schedule changed at the last minute and was not able to be at the meeting. When James arrived at 7 (on time) I mentioned that my husband would not be available. His first comment was "it would have been nice to get a phone call". The conversation proceeded to discuss the furnace selection. I requested a quote for a 92% efficient furnace. James did not mention that we would not receive any tax credits for anything under 95%. When I asked about running a new wire from the thermostat to the furnace for the fan, he suggested installing a switch on the furnace itself (I'd have to go out to the garage to turn the fan off and on). He also commented towards the end of the meeting that he wasn't getting paid for working late. I appreciate companies that are willing to work with their clients schedules and not guilt them into feeling bad about having to come out after 5. We did not select Jacobs for this work primarily because we did not feel that James represented the company in a professional manner. We had used Jacobs in the past for maintaining our old furnace and have been very happy with the technicians and service provided. We included them on our list of HVAC companies to interview because of this prior service. We will not be using Jacobs in the future.

On a previous visit, I was given a quote for the repair of $662 because of the type of set-up I have. I was very pleased when the technician was able to clean my a/c coils without as much work and was able to greatly reduce both the time it took to repair and the cost. The technician was friendly, professional and efficient.

Jacobs Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc were terrible. Since they installed the heat pump I've had to put in two defrost boards, do a vacuum leak search, I've had fuses blow, and replaced three thermostats but they never resolved any of it. I had to have another company come in and redo everything they have done over the years. At one point with Jacobs Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc, I spent $1,000 on two repair calls within a matter of weeks and the heat pump went out again. They were going to charge me again for the same kind of work. I finally had to threaten legal action and talk to the owner before I got it resolved. They got here to do the job but they never did the job right. I had a bad time with their service manager and one of the guy tracked mud into the house. I had a very bad experience with Jacobs Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc.

Dear Member, In reviewing your account, we can confirm that Jacobs Heating did install a heat pump system in your home in 2004. In looking through your history of service there was indeed a struggle in 2008 with the refrigerant circuit of your unit. However, the out of pocket expense which you have indicated above is incorrect. Jacobs heating visited your home once in February of 2008, again in April and Later in July. The amount of the visits totaled $986.00, what the review above doesn't mention is that we also visited your home on three other occasions in 2008 at no charge to rectify and resolve the issues. Prior to 2008 in 2005 our Service Manager also authorized an out of warranty thermostat replacement be performed for no charge. It is disappointing that we were unable to satisfy you, when given the opportunity we do our very best to keep our customers happy. Jacobs Heating CSR

The initial evaluation and estimate was detailed and not rushed at all. Jacobs got going on the work almost immediately and synchronized their schedule with the installation of the gas line by NW Natural gas. Main installation guy did an excellent job, making good choices about where and how to route various lines so as to not clutter the basement space below the joists. Some companies would probably have done the fastest thing, but these guys took their time and did the job right. The condensate pump died about a month later. Jacobs came out the next morning and replaced it without question. The only feedback I would give them is that I would have liked to hear about heat-pump options at the time of the evaluation. On the other hand, I probably came right out and asked for a furnace and A/C unit, so I can't really pin that on them. We're quite happy with the system.
Description of Work: Removed old oil-fired furnace, coordinated installation of gas line from street main by NW Natural Gas, replaced with combination high-efficiency gas furnace and A/C unit on existing ductwork. Also ran some extra gas lines for gas dryer and stove.

Jacobs has been servicing my furnance since I bought my house 6 yrs ago. When I woke in March with no heat, they diagnosed a crack in the heat exchanger face plate. It was not a new crack, evidenced by rusting around edges. I wasn't home when this was found, so I requested a technician return to explain the problem and answer my questions. Instead, Jacobs sent a SALESMAN, who specifically said he couldn't answer any of my questions about my furnace. He tried to sell me a new furnace for $6,000. To replace the part I was told it would only cost the labor (over $600.), since it was under warranty. Another company replaced the part for a total cost of $500.
Description of Work: Found an old crack in my heat exchanger face plate. Did not send a technician who could further explain the problem, but instead sent a SALESMAN who tried to sell me a new furnace for over $6000.00

We recently bought a house with an ugly old gas fireplace right in the front entryway. It didn't make any sense for it to be there, and we wanted it gone! We were so very pleased with the service received from Jacob's Heating. They said they'd charge by the hour, and I've never seen anyone work so quickly. What I thought would take several hours only took one. And they were clean, professional, and did an outstanding job. Very pleased.

We have used Jacobs over the course of several years for regular furnance maintenance. Generally, we've been pleased with the service and have purchased various service contracts. When our furnance failed during a cold snap in January, we called. They were able to get a technician to our house that afternoon. Unfortunately, he misdiagnosed the problem. He came back the next day to do a $500 fix. The fix didn't work but he left the new part in and a bill for the repair. We got a second opinion from another company - there were able to do a temporary fix, but pointed out that the Jacob's technician's repair made no sense. Given our furnance's age (20 years), both companies recommended replacing it. Jacob's quote for a new high-efficiency furnace was among the best and we chose them. The service manager worked with us very professionally and refunded the charges for the misdiagnosed repair. The crew who did the install on the new furnace was very professional. They arrived when they said they would, cleaned up after themselves, and did a great job of explaining how everything worked, and getting us all the necessary warranty and rebate paperwork.
Description of Work: We have used Jacobs for several years for furnace maintenance. Most recently, we replaced our furnace with a high-efficiency gas furnace.

The guys who came were very nice. He gave me kind of a discount because I signed up for them to do a service call on the air conditioning in the spring, which they kind of included with the price. He knew what he was doing with the gas fireplace. He got it fixed up and running. They were very professional and respected our home. He wore little booties and stuff like that. They did a good job cleaning the glass and before he put everything back together it was sparkling clean. They cleaned up well after themselves. I called them on a Friday and they got to me on a Monday.
Description of Work: Jacobs Heating & Air Conditioning came and fixed my gas fireplace. They cleaned it out and got it started again. They kind of spruced it up a little bit. They are going to come back out again to do a spring tune-up on the air conditioning system and if I need a hot water heater I think they do those too.

Jacobs came out and said the system was fine, although it was not producing heat. We were out of town at the time and had a neighbor let them in, but it took many phone calls on our end to find out what had transpired when the technician looked at the unit. Our neighbor ended up being the ones to let us know about the status of the service call! To be clear, our concerns are not with the technicians but with the office staff. We have used Jacobs several times over the years and their communication is consistently sub-par. You have to call them repeatedly to find out if and when they are coming out to service your furnace. For this particular call, the people in the service department had no idea who we were when we called even though, in theory, we were in their system and an active customer. It was annoying to have to explain the situation to several different people (depending on who answered the phone when we called). We were not happy that nobody from Jacobs ever attempted to contact us to let us know what they had found when servicing the furnace and that we had to find out from our neighbor what the status was.
Description of Work: The furnace was running but not producing heat. The Jacobs technician said that there was no problem with the unit.

Overall, this was a great experience. As I said, the workmanship was very professional and he even checked carefully to make sure the stove was working properly after the installation. This was part of a remodel to my kitchen and I am very happy with how it all t urned out. Gas is so much better than electric for cooking!
Description of Work: I switched from an electric to a gas stove in my kitchen and I needed a gas line put into my kitchen. I was fortunate in that I have a gas water heater in my garage just below the kitchen so it did not take too much to get the line into the kitchen, but the serviceman did a great job and both ends of the project look professionally finished.

See above: Estimate, follow up and installation went well. My only"complaint" is that their office sent me a very old rebate form for the hefty rebate from Energy Trust. I filled everything out and sent it to the address on the paperwork and it came back from the post office as undeliverable. When I looked at the website I saw that the 2012 forms were shown as needing to be sent to a different address. Apparently, the office person was on maternity leave. BUt if I had waited until just before my 3 months filing period, I might have lost out on $800 rebate. So I wasn't thrilled...not to mention that Jacob's said that they would fill out all the paperwork for the rebates. I guess I understand that staff is not always available due to time off, etc but it would be helpful if Jacob's had some sort of back up plan.
Description of Work: They installed a mini-split ductless heat pump. THis includes an outdoors unit and one indoor unit with electrical changes. I had 3 estimates on the work and theirs was about in the middle but it was a bit hard to compare since there were several specials going on both from manufacturers and from Energy trust. The work was done quickly and well as far as I can tell. But I know nothing about this kind of heating system. It passed the 3 second COunty inspection so I can only assume it is fine.

Jacob's was a pleasure to work with. Since we are not living in the home they worked with our tenants for access and that went very smoothly. They called soon after we signed the contract to set up the gas line install which was completed ahead of schedule. They cleaned up all the work and had the furnace operating in less than a week even though it was over the holidays. Our tenants are now happy with the results. We were able to pay with credit card (50% up front/50% upon completion). I would absolutely use Jacob's again in the future.
Description of Work: Jacob's replaced a biodiesel furnace that was failing. The furnace was only about 7-years old but had been problematic for quite a while. We had three bids put in to replace it with gas. The job included starting new gas service and installing the furnace but not the ducting (used existing ducts). The job did not require any electrical work (as this was already in place for the existing furnace) or replacement of the A/C unit (although they would have to accommodate the existing A/C as part of the install). The install would include removing the old furnace (although the tank would remain in place until we deal with emptying it). The home has a full basement which allowed for easy access. It is also located right on the street in downtown Portland so access to the site was simple. Time was a factor as the home was without heat and we had tenants in the home (they were using space heaters in the interim). Our goal was to have the job bid and completed in about a week. We got three bids from reputable companies (all with high ratings on Angie's List). Jacob's came in about $1000 cheaper than their competitors and included several extras, such as a CO detector and a rush install from NW Natural. The salesperson was friendly and efficient and we signed with him immediately after we got his quote (they were the last to bid). He was also smart about bidding out a less expensive furnace (slightly lower efficiency, but from Carrier, a well-known brand). He also did not bother having us install a new thermostat as the existing one was just fine. I think these combined factors are why his quote was so much lower.
