We ended up using another provider and their total bill for the cleaning and work needed was only $125. before tax. This was a much better deal. They did a great job and fit us in right away.

Response from American Chimney & Masonry
It is unfortunate that in the fall each year our technicians get booked out quite far in advance. One thing we do is try and schedule our regular clients in the spring months and offer a discount for having the service performed that time of year. It has helped some, but most people tend to think of having their chimneys swept once the weather begins to change. Some homeowners are able (and happy) to wait for one of our CSIA Certified technicians. Others are not, and we are sorry that we cannot always respond to meet their timeline.

It went very well - the masons were very professional and friendly. They did an excellent job! Steve Pietila was very responsive in coming over and reviewing what needed to be done. He appeared very knowledgeable. The price was competitive but affordable. I was very satisfied with their work.

I've been using their services for years, and they did a great job this time as well. The technician arrived on time, did a thorough cleaning and inspection of the chimney, and kept the area free of soot and debris while doing the job. He also did a thorough inspection of my roof's vents and my chimney cap.

I contacted 3 companies for estimates. One co. showed up, I saw him as he was leaving. He did not knock on the door or ring the bell to announce he was here. I don't know if he even got on the roof. Very unprofessional I thought. That co. did email me the estimate, was almost $300.00 more than American Chimney and that first co. did not mention replacing any bricks (at $50.00 a brick). Another co. didn't return my call. Steve from American Chimney & Masonary made an appointment and came out few days after I called, rang the bell to tell me he was here. He got on the roof, took photos to show me what was going on with the chimney. I Could see several bricks that their 'facing' were disintegrating. (Eight bricks were replaced). Explained what his co. would do to fix problems. Then he emailed me a PDF file with all the prices for each thing they planned to do. The co. even sent a thank you card for considering them before I let them know they had the job. (I only knew there were problems with chimney because of a roofing problem I had, Interstate Roofing Co. come out to fix that problem and that fellow told me the chimney was in bad shape.) Two fellows arrived excactly on time, 9 AM worked till after 5 PM. Very nice guys. I'd paid a 30% deposit before the work was started. But when Mark gave me the invoice, I didn't notice the deposit wasn't listed. So wrote a check for the whole amount. Believe it was the next day I noticed and called the office. In about three days a refund check for the deposit amount was in my hands. I certainly would use this company again.
Description of Work: Tuck & repair chimney. Replaced 8 bricks. Wire brushed bricks. Applied water repellent sealer to chimney. Applied crown sealent to chrown. Replaced chimney flashing.

We are very happy and they finished and he made a beautiful beautiful chimney. My chimney has a pattern with the bricks and he made little taller and it is the most beautiful chimney in the whole neighborhood. We have lived in this house for 40 years and previous owner had a fire in the fireplace and he had to do a lot of work on it. They cleaned it, they took pictures of the crack and they put a seal in. They cleaned up themselves. They are thorough. I would definitely use them again in the future.

I was very disappointed in the service that I received at the price I paid. All the existing finish and the day was over -- and it was a Friday. They put tarp over the chimney and anchored it with a part of the metal scaffoling. It was windy & rainy on Friday night. When I went out in the morning, the metal scaffoling had been blow around on my "new" roof. I left several messages at the only phone number that I has requesting someone to come fix what they had rigged up. No one called or showed up. On Monday they returned and told me that there was pre-existing damaged to the "new" roof. I called the roofing company that had just finished the roof in August. The damage that was on the roof was definately done by the scaffoling being blow around on the roof. The job remained incomplete on Monday with the promise to be back on Tuesday to finish the job. Around 11 AM on Tuesday I got a call letting me know that the worker was sick and hopefully would return on Wednesday. The job was actually finished on Friday. I think the work done was well done, but I was very unhappy about the damage to the roof.

Response from American Chimney & Masonry
I tried calling the homeowner today, as soon as I saw this post. I had not heard that there was a problem or that she was not happy with our service (the work was completed in early January). Our technicians informed me that there was an issue with the roofing before the wind incident and that they suggested that the homeowner contact her roofer to take care of that problem. If there was some damage to the roof that we caused we would (and will) most certainly take care of it. It is true that our office is closed on weekends and that nobody was available to take the call. It is also true that our technician was ill for several days and unable to work. We always try and communicate this as soon as we know the status of our staff and I apologize that we failed to contact the homeowner sooner. We work very hard to satisfy our clients and provide an exceptional service. Most of the time we succeed, but occasionally we fall short. We will always work with our clients to resolve any issues that arise if we are given the opportunity. We remain ready to do so in this case as well.

I really liked them. It was good. They were very clear that their work was backed and to call them if there was a problem. I did call and the guy came out and he fixed the leak. He did stand by what he promised and I appreciated that. His price was pretty competitive. I shopped around and for the quality I got, I appreciated it.
Description of Work: I used American Chimney & Masonry because I have a 100 year old chimney and the brick was dried out. There was no rain cap on it so the old brick was soaking up the water like a sponge and it was leaking into our house. They looked at the situation and through trial and error, they sort of fixed it. Initially they sprayed it and put on a cap but there was still a leak. He came back and fixed it.

Went fine, except they failed to recommend installing a chimney cap at the time, and a cap subsequently installed by another (chimney sweep) contractor now hums/vibrates in the wind. I found just now that they do recommend caps on their website: http://www.american-chimney.com/chimney-services/caps-and-guards/.

Response from American Chimney & Masonry
The homeowner graded us with all A’s and one B on November 7, 2010 for this project two months after it was completed. We received a voicemail message from the homeowner about a week ago stating that the chimney cap we installed was making noise and requesting us to come and see what was wrong. We looked up the project in our records and learned that we did not install the chimney cap. We left a message for the homeowner that we did not install the chimney cap and that for us to send out a technician to go up on the roof and inspect it we would need to charge our standard service call. We would of course do this at no charge if we had installed the cap. We did not hear back from the homeowner. Because this project was completed three years ago it is difficult to recall the details of what may have been recommended during a conversation in August 2010. From our notes it looks like this chimney serves a furnace and we typically recommend a chimney lining system or cap (this is what is indicated in our notes from the project). I can see that neither of these items was included in our proposal, though we do typically recommend the liner. Another variable we consider when making these recommendations is the age of the furnace – if the furnace is expected to be replaced within the next year or so we always let the homeowner know that the liner will likely not be needed as the higher efficiency furnaces don’t require a chimney at all, but are typically vented out the side. It sounds like the problem is with a chimney cap installed by another company. We remain willing to help if the homeowner wishes us to do so.

We regularly use American Chimney & Masonry for our fireplace inspection, cleaning and repair. Their service is knowledgable, reliable, professional and always reasonably priced. We burn dry, seasoned wood all winter long and used to have our chimney inspected and cleaned annually. The professional at American Chimney & Masonry informed us that if we continue to burn dry wood in the same manner, we really don't need to have annual inspection and cleaning, every other year is fine. We appreciated his honesty!

Thank you for the great review, we're grateful that you continue to use our company for your fireplace and chimney needs. One thing I would like to mention is that though your chimney may actually only need to be swept every other year the National Fire Protection Association and the Oregon State Fire Marshall both recommend that chimneys be inspected at least once each year. Take care!

The sweep was on time and careful to cover the area around the fireplace to prevent soot from getting on the floor or furniture. After cleaning he inspected the chimney from the fireplace opening and from the roof. He told me about a repair that would probably be needed in the the future, but said it was not urgent. No high pressure salesmanship.

We had to go step by step because we didn't know what we would run into. Walt removed the woodstove--a very difficult job, Dennis cleaned the chimney, installed the gas and the fireplace log, repaired the hearth and facia. They worked efficiently and cleanly. They were friendly and answered my many questions cheerfully. I think the price was fair and I would call them back with complete confidence. I was apprehensive going into this but it turned out bettrt than expected.

I purchased a deal on Angie's List for a chimney sweep. I am a new homeowner and have never owned a fireplace before so I did not know what to expect. I called American Chimney & Masonry and got an appointment right away due to a cancellation. They were great about giving me a reasonable appointment time window, the name of the professional coming to my home and asking if I wanted a phone call before the person arrived. My service was performed by Walter who gave me a courtesy call before arriving and came at the time specified. He was courteous and friendly and did an excellent job keeping the fireplace surround clean during the process. Walter gave me recommendations for repairs (without a hard sell) and tips on ways to keep my fireplace chimney in tact that I could do myself. He was helpful and informative and I plan to make the repairs he recommended since they were reasonably priced. He did a thorough job cleaning my chimney/fireplace and I could definitely tell it needed it. I highly recommend this local company and Walter!

It is a step by step process to see if the pre-fab fireplace was safe to use and if it could be converted to a gas log. It ended up being a big job to remove the wood stove. Walt was very careful and removed it safely and with minimal damage. They will be back to install the gas log and repair damage from the wood stove being too large for the fireplace.

American gave us a realistic bid with a low and a high end. The job ended up being bigger than we expected and they could have justified going over their bid. But they stuck to what they said they'd charge and we are pleased with the end result. The two gentlemen who worked in our house were courteous, efficient and they kept the house spectacularly clean; they dismantled an entire chimney inside the house and left hardly a speck of dust anywhere!
