Description of Work: Ben Franklin Plumbing repaired/replaced bathtub faucets that were not working. The work was done well and have not experienced any problems since they fixed it. However, before they started the repair, I asked for the total cost and I specifically asked if there were any other charges involved. The plumber replied no, and he gave me the cost which I agreed to. When I started to pay after the repair had been completed; he told me that there was an additional $69.00 charge for the visit. The plumber also took a 15-20 minute break to talk on his cell phone outside. I do not have a problem with the work they did, just in how the financial part of it was handled.

Description of Work: I had a water heater installed. The heater was previously under house and was relocated to a closet in the garage. They were prompt and very personable. It was the the only water heater I had since I moved in 26 years ago. So it served its purpose. Hope this one is as dependable. They cleaned up the area and showed me how to adjust the thermostat.

After waiting two days for two local plumbers to call us back, we decided to take a chance on a corporate-type plumbing service. They immediately responded to the house and quickly found the problem. Our plumber also checked out the entire house plumbing, pressure, leaks, water quality, etc. offering tips on maintenance and cost saving. We had a toilet handle that had to be held down - another item we'd been putting off until we absolutely had to have a plumber make a service call. The plumber was able to simply tighten a chain and fix it...without extra charge. The cost was quoted to us before the work was started. The plumber was very professional, clean and helpful. We couldn't have asked for more. We are extremely happy with the entire experience.
Description of Work: We had undetermined leak under sink. Plumber determined it was in the spray hose and replaced it. He also replaced the water pipes on the hot water heater that were beginning to rust. (We had been saving this job for when we needed a plumber to save a service charge.)

We had to reschedule several times and they were very diligent about rescheduling. The guy that came out was prompt and he was very knowledgeable. He spent as much time as he needed. He was basically doing it for free although we did end up buying something for the septic tank but it was all part of the service that we had paid for the year before. I would say they were wonderful to work with. We will definitely use them in the future.
Description of Work: We have used Benjamin Franklin Plumbing a couple times. They were here within the last two months. We signed some kind of yearly agreement the year before. They called us and said that part of the agreement was that they would come out and do an inspection and they would back flush the water heater for free.

Called for an estimate to fix a toilet that would not stop running and to clear a slow drain. Estimate for toilet was $388 and drain was $200. Told them no thanks and paid the $80 service fee. Went to Lowes and purchase a toilet kit for $16 and had a friend install. Went to You Tube and watched a video on how to clear a clogged drain. Benjamin Franklin is WAY overpriced and will not call them again. UPDATE: Was contacted by Benjamin Franklin. A refund check was sent via mail for the service call along with a letter explaining that a new technican has misquoted the work, which was what resulted in the unusually high estimate. The true estimate was much more reasonable and had i been given the correct price the first time we would have used their services.

Got the name off Angie's list for drain line cleaning. I got a price from Roto Rooter, which I thought was high, then called Ben Franklin for an estimate for the service. They told me a price of around $75, which I thought was great. However when they got to my house, that amount was just for a service call, and they wanted over $500 to do the work. I argued with them and they met the price from Roto Rooter. They cleaned the drains and tried to sell me a bacteria treatment that would keep the pipes flowing, and only they had this product. They wanted about $100 for this which had to be done about every 6 months. I said no. The toilets and tubs drained fine for a few day, then stopped up again. They came back and said the problem was not with the drains, but with the plumbing lines under the house, which they said they would redo for $2500. To say I was surprised that their original cleaning didn't clean these pipes as well is an under-statement. I said no, and again turned down the opportunity to buy their bacteria treatment. These guys are high-tech snake-oil salesmen. Do yourself a favor and get a local plumber, not this franchise. [Update] I just had to have another plumber come out and un-stop the drains. The original work that Ben Franklin did was just to clean out the two main drains under the house. This didn't happen. I think they might have cleaned out one line where the clean-out started under the house, but didn't do the other. In fact, the cap to the other cleanout had never been removed, and was still cemented to the cleanout. I watched the plumber today remove the cap and rod the line.
Description of Work: I had one toilet that was stopped up and one that drained slow, two sinks that drained slow, and backup of dirty water into the bathtubs.

On April 19, 2011 a technician arrived at 2411 2nd Ave NW, Hickory NC the home of the member who along with his wife was in the midst of remodeling his late parent’s home that had been vacant for some time. An evaluation was made and discovered that the main cast iron 4” line was backed up most likely due to construction debris that was inadvertently flushed down the lines because of remodeling. The evaluation fee was waived and a price was given to clear the blockage from a clean out access inside the crawlspace with a 67 day guarantee that was agreed to by the member. The line was cleared and it was recommended to the member to replace all the waste and sewer lines that were in poor shape and over 50 years old. The member declined any other work, signed off that he was satisfied and paid for the service. The Bio Ben the member mentioned is a drain maintenance we offer every customer to purchase or not purchase at their own discretion. On May 31, 42 days after the line was successfully cleared we were called back to the members home at no charge for slow drains and possible warranty. Upon arrival and evaluation it was discovered that one of the toilets had been pulled up for remodeling and was clearly not backed up. Also the cleanout we cleared the line from on our first visit in the crawlspace was removed and water was flowing freely with no blockage evident. The technician removed the trap under the kitchen sink that was slow and discovered a galvanized steel drain line that was over 50 years old, in very bad shape clogged with rust and other debris that needed to be replaced. Price options were given to the member for the repairs that he declined and the technician left. We did not hear again from the member until he called my office some time later and I explained that we could only warranty the one main line from the cleanout and not the smaller lines that were slow because of other issues not related to the work we did. Concerning the update by the member that was made in October we did notice the cleanout on the same line but made the decision to access from the crawlspace because we did not want to possibly break out the cap that was cemented to the cleanout and cost the member another repair. On our visits to the home we observed a lot of construction debris in the tub and on the floor that we believe some to be inadvertently flushed down the lines causing his backups compounded by the age of the lines. Our professional opinion is that unless he replaces some of those lines he will continue to have blockage problems.

Called the company for service and they sent a plumber out in a couple of days. We had determined where the water was coming for, but did not know how to fix it. He found the cause and repaired it and checked the other water connections in the house to ensure there were no other problems. He also adjusted the toilet that did not shut off occassionally in the basement bathroom at no charge. The only thing I didn't like was the sales pitch he gave us for a whole house water filter system, but that didn't take long and when we turned it down, we did not receive any nagging follow-up calls.
