great
listened to my description of pain
problem solved
WELL - I went to Physical Therapy for a month & my therapist said due to my pain & lack of progress in therapy that I should see a surgeon. I went to another surgeon & had MRI & surgery - I had a substantial labrum tear that needed repair for my activity level & shoulder stability plus I had broken off a lot of cartilage from my humerus that was floating in the joint area & probably the cause of a lot of my pain & impingements - plus I had fractured my humerus. My shoulder is feeling so much better & my PT is right on track & i'm excited to having a stronger & pain free shoulder for my future biking & Paddling & racing. Also later when I told folks (about 10 people in Asheville) that I had seen Dr. Groh first - & told them how AWFUL his bedside manner seemed to me- all of those folks said that they knew of his lacking bedside manner.
Long before making an appointment with him, I had asked for recommendations from all my acquaintances who had gotten knee replacements. I also attended a joint replacement seminar conducted by a very well-known orthopedic surgeon in an adjoining county who had done the procedure for several of those friends, but thought he was overbearing if not pompous. When I casually mentioned my need for the procedure to a friend who (unbeknownst to me) had had a knee replaced, she immediately said without being asked, "Oh, you must have Dr. Saenger do it! He did mine, and he had me doing this the afternoon of the operation," as she pulled her knee up close to her chest. Since Dr. Saenger had not been mentioned by any of my other friends, I asked why she had chosen him. She replied that rather than ask friends for recommendations, she had interviewed physical therapists in the Asheville area: ?If you or a member of your family needed a knee replacement, whom would you want to do it?? The name she heard the most was his.
When I had my first appointment with Dr. Saenger, I was impressed by his quiet confidence and the great care he took to make sure I understood all aspects of the procedure (including showing me knee and prosthetic models, referring to my own x-ray images, and drawing sketches), the preparation for it, and the rehabilitation thereafter. He did all this, and spent considerable time answering my questions, even though I had not given him any indication that I would choose him--I was impressed that he clearly did not assume that I would. I also liked the fact that he used minimally invasive surgical techniques, and prosthetics that he considered the best available. Finally, when I learned that he had done thousands of knee replacements over the course of decades, that clinched it for me.
Fortunately, a cancellation made it possible for me to have the procedure done within two weeks. It went very well, and he followed my progress closely while I was in the hospital and via thorough follow-up examinations. Even after a complication (not caused by the knee replacement) kept me in the hospital for an extra three days, he visited me every day even though I was then officially under the care of other physicians.
Although he told me my friend was probably exaggerating when she demonstrated pulling her knee close to her chest the day of the surgery, my rehabilitation and restoration of flexibility progressed extremely well, and I was quickly able to stop taking medication for pain.
I could not be more satisfied with a surgeon. And a bonus in being treated by him is his assistant, Jessica Hancock, a charming nurse practitioner who assists him in the ER and fields patients? questions afterward. (My wonderfully straight, beautifully healing surface scar is the result of her handiwork.)
