Surgery went very well. I was pleased with the amount of detail I was provided about the eye condition and treatment options, and with the presurgery instructions and the surgery. It healed quickly and successfully, no complications. I had prepared questions and she answered them thoroughly.
What is hard to quantify in the grading system above, however, is the overall way this clinic operates and the overall patient experience. It is a large clinic with a full waiting room in front, and yet more waiting rooms in the back. Both times I visited the clinic -- for the initial consultation and then a follow-up six months later, I had multiple tests and imaging procedures done to my eyes. My situation was quite minor and benign, and yet they insisted that all of the tests were necessary. When I reported this to my regular eye doctor, she also was surprised that they had done all the tests. Then, when I actually saw the doctor, it was for five or ten minutes and he seemed rather distracted and rushed. I had the sense that this was a large operation, where the doctors and the clinic were as interested in seeing as many patients as possible and doing as many expensive tests and procedures as possible, as they were providing quality, individualized care for me and all the other folks in the waiting room(s). That is, I had a sense of being a cog in the system, going through a predetermined set of procedures, rather than as an individual patient with specific symptoms and concerns.
Because of this, I have not been back to this clinic. The new retinal specialist I've since seen at the Mayo Clinic has yet to do any fancy tests or imaging, relying instead on a thorough, human examination to keep track of my situation. I trust that the folks at Mayo know what they're doing, and wonder about all the over-treatment and over-billing by Dr. Bennett and his associates.
