This individual, Jerry Fishburn, was recommended by a neighbor.  We all live in the same neighborhood.  Initially, Jerry was attentive to my concerns and appeared to make an effort to complete the work to my specifications.  However, as time went on, he became more difficult to contact, putting larger jobs with deeper pockets ahead of completing mine, yet always wanting payment immediately for each step; and there always seemed to be hidden costs, not initially quoted on.  I never understood that.  For example, even though he knew we would be having it carpeted, I had to pay that amount when he was ready to pick up the carpet, even though he had quoted half up front and the other half when it was done.  That was an added cost.  And there are other examples.  I asked to have a wood box removed from the basement to the patio.  He tore it apart to get it out but promised to reassemble it.  He never did. It still sits in pieces in my backyard.  He didn't take care and scratched an expensive large-screen TV's screen even though he had declined us moving it saying it would be fine.  He didn't believe the scratch was bad enough to complain about, but it was a brand new TV; and now the screen was scratched.  He subsequently bought a comparable one off the internet and took the one he scratched for himself, which I thought was kind of shady.  I don't believe he should have benefited at all for the damage by now having a large-screen TV that he basically bought for himself, but we didn't argue.  Then it took FOREVER for him to complete the work, always having an excuse, one of which was a spontaneous vacation!  Even though he hadn't reassembled the wood box, he wanted his final payment.  I asked him what, then, would be his incentive to complete the work.  He promised he would.  I never heard from him again, and he never responded to any of my subsequent phone calls... NEVER!
