I was very disappointed. The job was to paint our basement family room, stairway, and two small bathrooms. Although the original representative and the scheduler were very helpful and responsive, there were some issues with the actual painting that I feel were sub-par. The original quote called for 1-2 person crew for 3 to 4 days. Only a single painter arrived and it actually took a total of 11 days to complete. The actual painter was a sub-contractor and was late arriving at our home on the first day and EVERY single day during the course of the job. Never any sooner than a half hour late, normally 1 to 2 hours late. On one day he never showed at all, without any contact or explanation. When he initially completed our job, there were MANY defects. Paint drips on the walls, roller marks and streaks, roller spray on the shower stalls, paint on the wood work, some spots that were missed and not painted at all. In addition, there were 2 stains of spilled/dripped paint on our carpet. I can forgive a half dozen flaws, I understand that mishaps do happen, but there were more than 35 blemishes. Although Certapro did eventually force the contractor to return and correct nearly all the mistakes, but Certapro kept bringing that same contractor back to work on our home, even after we requested a different painter. I am very sorry that I cannot recommend Certapro of Grand Haven. Again, the representative and the scheduler were very helpful and responsive. My issue seems to be with the management of their sub-contractors. Certapro of Grand Haven must realize that the sub-contractors they hire are the “face of their company”, good or bad. And it is NOT my job to manage their subs.

"Hello [Member Name Removed], Thank you so much for your honesty and the opportunity to serve you. I am sorry that there were defects in the initial job and appreciate that you allowed us to come back and get everything fixed to your satisfaction. In the end, I believe that you received an amazing paint job and that you will be able to enjoy it for years to come. ---Troy Hacker"

They were delayed on their original start date by 3 weeks. We had to call them to find out why they were a no show. Would not commit to a reschedule date until 3rd call. The 3 man crew that was initially scheduled, ended-up being 1 person - and not a good one either. It was not until they were pushed to consider compensation for the delay and quality that a portion of the bill was reduced. The representative was paid at the end of the job, but the check to date has not been cashed. Not impressed with their business practices.
Response from CertaPro Painters of Grand Haven
"We deeply apologize for the service delay and believe we have the addressed quality concerns. This has been a learning moment for our staff and we are taking measures to prevent future scheduling and quality issues. Thank you for bringing this situation to our attention."

It went perfectly, turned out perfectly and I have so much confidence in CertaPro, Troy and Gabs that it is stress free. They do outstanding and perfect work. I am so glad I found them. I will be sure to use them again. They are very reasonable for charges!

The job went "ok", but we had the following issues: 1) work that was specified in the pre-quote visit was missed in the written quote and CertaPro tried to charge extra for it, 2) Although the paint colors were clearly specified in advance, they started painting the wrong color on the wrong wall, 3) Their masking was sub-par and we ended having to cleanup paint speckles and had prints from stained oak trim and stair handrail, 4) They committed to remove and paint behind a mirror but did not do so.

it went very well. The back door looked horrific and I never thought they would be able to paint it to look nice. They did such a great job that it looked like a new door with not traces of paint showing. Everything on the front went very well also. They were quick but did a great job. Made my house look new again!!

Response from CertaPro Painters of Grand Haven
"This project was completed November, 2014. [Member Name Removed] contacted CertaPro about some paint peeling in some lower siding shakes. Weather prevented any immediate work due to snow. In the spring of 2015 we sent our crew who prepared the surfaces and coated the shakes with the same paint color at the affected areas. The siding is very old and we did see evidence of layers of paint that peeled from paint previous to ours. These areas are not covered by warranty but we tried to help [Member Name Removed]. Several trips were made over the 2015 painting season per [Member Name Removed]'s request . [Member Name Removed] contacted our office in October 2015 stating the color of the touch up paint was not the same as the original 2014 paint. Our Sherwin Williams representative was sent to the home to trouble shoot the color problem. The paint representative confirmed we used the correct color. The surface of the shake was actually getting filled in with paint causing a smooth surface due to the repeated paint applications during the spring and summer. In the fall of 2015 our crew painted the entire bottom half of the house (rear and side) for [Member Name Removed]. We have responded to each of [Member Name Removed]'s requests promptly to provide remedy's to concerns and by going beyond our warranty representations. Lastly, our crew painted the front of her home where she had some siding work completed for free in the fall of 2015 with the additional paint we had from the final recoat to the side and rear of her home. We care and try hard to please our clients. Unfortunately we were not able to satisfy [Member Name Removed]."

They did a very good job.  He estimated the time for me and he was actually quicker than the time that he estimated. He was very prompt, came right away in the morning. Then it had to sit overnight before he could sand it. He came back the next day and finished off. He was very prompt and very good.

They did a great job on the painting and the repairs to the trim that had water damage.  There was a misunderstanding/confusion on when I hoped they would start the job, hence the lower rating on punctuality.

The painting crew came to my home and stated immediately that we were paying too much for the service requested and that it would only take them 2 days to complete the work rather than the 5 days we were initially told.  They stated that they were an independent painting contractor and if we needed any other work, they would be willing to perform it much cheaper and quicker than CertaPro.  On day one when I returned to my home unexpectedly I found one of the painting crew members cleaning paint brushes in my corian kitchen sink after I asked them to clean their brushes in the utility sink in the garage.  I also heard what sounded like one of the crew members going into my cupboards in my laundry room/bathroom while using the restroom, I could hear cabinet doors slamming shut.  I confronted the painting crew leader, he questioned the crew member about what I heard, the crew member left and didn't return due to his anger.  At the end of the first day there was paint on my floors, carpet, appliances, cabinets, corian countertops, fireplace stone, blinds,  anything that wasn't removed from the rooms being painted.  We were told by Troy Hacker, the owner that the crews would use paint tarps, but it doesn't appear that happened.   We also found damage to a wooden chair in the basement that had been banged up again or pushed into something and had a piece of the wooden leg missing.  We observed that they were painting the recessed light trim rings to the ceiling, we asked that they not do that, that they drop the trim rings and paint underneath them.  We were told that they don't do that, that they always paint the trim rings in place.  The kitchen ceiling, which was completed on day one according to the crew leader had sections that were obviously not painted.  One corner in the kitchen had a big section about the size of a dollar coin, of the texture on the wall knocked out, but painted over as if they  intended to leave it that way.  We pointed out all of these problems  to Troy Hacker, owner, he was going to get with the crew to correct the problems we found on the following day.  We also told him that we didn't want the crew member that had walked out to return on the crew in the future, due to retaliation concerns.  On the afternoon of day two the crew leader called me mid-afternoon and told me he was complete with the entire job.  When I got home that evening we found the bathroom ceiling and 1/2 of one wall in the bathroom had not been painted at all.  The shower curtain and rod from the bathroom had been put on the bed in the bedroom and had fallen/wedged itself between the mattress and footboard.   None of the paint spatter around the entire basement and kitchen had been cleaned up.  We found that where they taped the wood trim to paint around, when they riped the tape off lifted the paint.  They caulked around the wood trim before they painted rather than after and the lifted paint really was obvious.  We also found someone had dumped what looked like coffee in the white corian sink and left it there to stain the kitchen sink.  We again spoke with Troy Hacker, Owner and told him of all of the things we found and our displeasure.  Troy met us at the house that evening and stated he agreed with us on all of the findings.  We requested that the same crew not return to finish the job and clean up because it appeared they have no pride in their work and don't really care if they perform a quality job.  Troy convinced us that as a learning experience he needed to have this same crew return to complete the job.  We reluctantly agreed.   On day three, we surprised the crew by returning home to find them with paint cans, brushes and rollers laying on the countertop in the basement with no drop cloth or protection on the countertop.  We could hear them in the basement bathroom banging something into the walls and the door.  We opened the door to look in and saw them standing on the side of the tub with the shower curtain rod banging it into the wood door and trying to put it on the freshly painted wall (when they took it from the shower enclosure wall) damaging the fresh paint.  We confronted the painting crew leader about what they were doing with the shower cutain rod and  the paint on the countertop and all of the mess they had created and not cleaned up for the three days.  The crew leader got mad and left the house without finishing the job.  We again contacted Troy the owner and he came out so we could point out to him what still wasn't done including the damage to the kitchen wall, the paint on the countertops, cabinets, appliances, blinds, etc.  He agreed at that point to bring in another crew to clean up and complete the job.  It took two more days to complete the painting, repairs and clean-up.  Troy the owner ended up finishing the job on day six. Then, after everyone left and we went to put out our garbage containers for trash pick up the next week we found all of their paint supplies in our garbage can with no room for our garbage.  There were open paint cans with paint in them, brushes, tape and tarps (that we are not sure where they were used), etc. The problem is our trash contractor will not take paint cans with runny paint and will only take water based paints, which they were, but the paint needs to be dried or soaked up with kitty litter.  We requested that Troy Hacker come back and take all of the trash from the job, to somewhere that would take the waste.  Troy Hacker tried  his best to satisfy us, but just the initial poor workmanship of the job and  bad attitude of the crew, I will never be comfortable that we could leave our home in the hands to Certa Pro Painters in the future.

Overall, it went well and we would hire CertaPro of West Michigan again. There were a couple of minor quality issues that we brought to their attention, and to Troy's credit, CertaPro quickly resolved them to our complete satisfaction. The 2-man crew that performed the work were punctual, friendly, and professional.

"It was a pleasure to work for [remove member name] and transform his kitchen cabinets. The final product looked amazing and I was grateful he was able to hire several contractors I recommended for additional projects. Our color consultant helped pick out a great color that really brought the whole project together. We look forward to working with [remove member name] on future projects."

Troy ( the owner of Certapro of Western Michigan) was very professional and thorough. The price was very competitive although the painters that actually did the job said that he underestimated the overall work. But the price remained nearly the same and was only adjusted slightly for a few extra things not in the original quote. The painters that were hired by Troy to do the work were not the most professional although very nice and no real issues. For example, they smoked at their cars on brakes and one female painter asked to use our bathroom ( we let her and it was no big deal, but professionally speaking, they are not supposed to ask). Overall, they did a great job and Troy was always reachable and responsive. I would use him again.

The painters were on time, got things done, repaired walls as needed, and cleaned up behind themselves. They followed up on a couple spots that needed further touchup.  I was impressed that any questions we had were able to be communicated to the company and Troy followed up quickly.  The painters were pleasant, clean and helpful.
