I recently moved into a fixer-upper in a fantastic Birmingham neighborhood. I began some projects, when a friend recommended Kevin Hart.
I paid a substantial deposit on Aug 21 with the promise that construction for a large addition/ renovation would be underway in "about 2 months". I cancelled and paid previously booked contractors and a designer. Mr. Hart did not show up to measure the property, as he had promised, sending "assistants". I patiently waited for some conversation about what I wanted in my renovation or how the progress was going and then tried calling him on 9/9, 9/11, 9/13, and finally on 9/16. He finally called back late on 9/16 saying, essentially that someone had quit, someone got married, "your voicemail didn't work" etc., ect. He said he would get working on my project that night and "probably" the next day.
I was left with little confidence that he was at all able to handle any project. When I arrived at his office the next day to request he return my money, he refused to give me any money and tried to give me a drawing of my house that his assistants had done. Additionally, he told me that he had another drawing but he "could not find it" and would "drop it off" at my house some other time, along with whatever funds he decided I would be entitled to. (My opinion is that this drawing had not been done, either.)
In my opinion, this guy is a disaster! I don't think he is honest or capable of honoring his commitments. I am totally screwed, at this point. There is no way I will be able to arrange this major addition/renovation before the Michigan winter sets in and will spend the next several months in a semi-demolished 1960's disaster house, hoping to be refunded ANY of my money.
I have no problem with a job taking a bit longer - things come up but I think it's shady to "hide" from someone you've taken money from. Hopefully, you can avoid this hassle by avoiding doing business with this guy
