Real Estate Auctions
Ok, but some items were left out of the auction because he said they were junk, but one of those items was a clothes dryer which I had used myself to do laundry for my mother after she was no longer supposed to use stairs. He said it was no good, but allowed someone to take it the next day without consulting us and said the man had given it to his daughter. If it didn't work , how was the person using it? I know it worked I used it. Plus, that meant he gave the key to the house to someone we did not know and did not authorize to have the key to the house. I was very upset about this. My sister and I are dealing with our deceased parents belongings in another state so it was not easy for us to be there often. A couple of those items were antique furniture pieces. The first time Mr Mallow came to the house he commented about wanting the large antique oak roll top desk. He also looked at a lot of cooking equipment/kitchen items, antique glass bottles, crocks, etc. I told him I would like to have one or 2 of the small bottles Dad had collected but I did not know which ones were valuable. He said, "Well, I am not going to tell you"- which felt a little abrasive, if not hostile. I wasn't going to keep more than a bottle or 2. He returned to the house 2 other times prior to the auction. Both times he mentioned wanting the roll top desk. The last time I said, for 10 thousand it's yours and he laughed. He said if it weren't for a few pieces in the house he would not have accepted the job. The day of the auction we traveled again from 4-5 hours away to be there. He had a small note on the desk saying do not try to close the roll top. It said it works but you might break it. Then at the point of offering it he made comments about the desk top being warped slightly but was still a good desk. There was no warping. My father had used that desk for years and my sister and I had gone over the desk taking out every drawer and looking in every shelf making sure it was completely empty. The only possibility was that it could have been worn a little on the top due to use- but it was still definitely flat and in good condition. When no one bid he ended up going down to $50 to sell it- and only one person bid. I truly believe this was a set-up. I think he told everyone not to bid on it- and then badmouthed it so no one would want it. He wanted it from the very beginning and make sure no one else bid on it. Afterward I was saying how disappointed I was- it should have been worth hundreds of dollars at least, and my dad had offers on it in the past, and he said, "well, it will make you feel better to know it is going to be at my house". Wow, why would that make me feel better- that means he got one of his family to bid on it and on top of getting it for a totally absurd price, he then got to keep 30% of that- which means he got a valuable desk for $35. I cannot say this was dishonest, but it was contrived and we were taken advantage of for sure.
