I sent the contractor an e-mail explaining the problem yesterday. They then called me to ask a couple of specific questions and set up an appointment. I was able to do one for the next afternoon. They let me know when they were going to arrive, and actually showed up earlier. They looked at the problem and were able to fix it. I thought it would take a while, but they were fast and efficient.

Plumber arrived on time, was very courteous, listened well, decided what work needed to get done and did it. I thought that $120/hour, plus fuel charge plus 300-percent mark up on parts was high but luckily I don't have to call plumbers too often.

THE MEMBER CALLED OUR OFFICE AND SET UP A SERVICE CALL. SHE HAD TWO TOILETS REBUILT AND CLEARED A TUB DRAIN. WHEN SHE BOOKED THE APPOINTMENT SHE COULD HAVE ASKED OUR HOURLY RATE AND WOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD $120.00 PER HOUR PLUS THE $5.00 FUEL CHARGE. AS FAR AS MATERIALS ARE CONCERNED WE MARK UP OUR MATERIALS APPROXIMATELY 30% ABOVE OUR COST TO BE ABLE TO WARRANTY THEM FOR 1 YEAR. WE PURCHASE OUR MATERIALS FROM PLUMBING SUPPLY HOUSES WHICH GENERALLY COST MORE THAN PURCHASING THEM IN A HOME IMPROVEMENT STORE AND THEY ARE ALSO BETTER QUALITY FOR THE TRADE. SINCE THIS JOB WAS COMPLETED SHE HAS SINCE CALLED FOR ANOTHER PROBLEM IN HER HOME. OUR CUSTOMERS ARE FREE TO PURCHASE THEIR OWN PARTS, WHICH WE WILL INSTALL, BUT THE PARTS ARE NOT GUARANTEED BY US.

The price was a little more than expected. They could not actually fix the leak in the bathroom, so I did not give a grade for quality of work. They actually answered my phone calls and scheduled an appointment, which is better than I expected from a contractor. I might use them again in the future.

AFTER RESEARCHING OUR RECORDS WE FOUND THE MEMBER'S ESTIMATE WAS BACK IN DECEMBER. I SPOKE WITH THE MEMBER ON THE PHONE AND EXPLAINED THAT SHE WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM IN DOING WHAT SHE HAD HOPED TO DO WITH HER BOILER. I FELT AT THAT TIME THAT IT WAS NOT NECESSARY TO SEND AN ESTIMATE BECAUSE I DIDN'T BELIEVE THAT I COULD ACHIEVE WHAT SHE WAS LOOKING FOR. I EXPLAINED THAT TO HER ON THE PHONE, BUT SHE MUST HAVE STILL FELT THAT I NEEDED TO PUT IT ON PAPER. I APOLOGIZE THAT I DIDN'T, BUT I REALLY HAD NOTHING TO PUT ON PAPER FOR HER. I CAN ONLY APOLOGIZE AGAIN FOR THE COMMUNICATION ERROR AND IF IN THE FUTURE SHE WOULD LIKE TO GIVE US ANOTHER TRY WE WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO ACCOMMODATE HER.

We didn't use Baker Elman, but it's nice to deal with a responsive person in this world of contractors who never get back to you.
Description of Work: We have a drain in front of our brownstone in the city that is not draining at all. After leaving a message, I got a call back the next day from Dave Elman, who talked with me about our dry well problem and what we might need to do to rectify the stopped up drain. He didn't do the kind of work that we need done, but I was impressed by his quick response, and that he took the time to talk with me about the problem even though it wouldn't be a job he would be taking on.

After emailing relevant photos, I discussed the job with David Elman who provided an estimate of <$150 (less than my other bids). The work was completed in less than an hour that afternoon for a total cost of $139 (including the Angie's List discount). This work was completed without having to expose the wall interior. I received the bill in the mail about a week later and was able to pay by credit card over the phone. The overall experience was professional. I would consider this company again for future plumbing needs.

THE MEMBER CALLED OUR OFFICE AFTER HAVING A PROBLEM WITH A KITCHEN REMODEL JOB. THE PLUMBING DID NOT PASS THE LOCAL PLUMBING INSPECTION. SHE CALLED OUR COMPANY AND WE WENT OUT TO LOOK AT THE PROBLEM. I got a bill for $90/supplies & $420/labor,less $42 for Angie's discount. I called to find out why the labor so high, and was told that they added in extra labor charge for the second guy who was less trained & charged at "only" $75 per hour. I said I was not told there would be 2 workers, which would have changed my expectation of the total labor cost involved. They said they don't mention it because not every job requires both guys, so if they see it doesn't, the helper just hangs out and you are not charged for his time. Rather than give me any consideration in the labor cost, I was told the bill had a mistake in it to begin with - I should have been charged $450 for the labor instead of $420. So I was at an advantage already. I complained that I was not told the right info at the outset, & urged him to tell future customers the right info. He sarcastically responded: ok, we'll make sure to tell everyone who calls about every possibility that they could face. I then asked about the supplies cost. While I had agreed to have the flapper on my second toilet replaced since the guy was running out to get flapper for the first toilet, they replaced the second float assembly too - adding $19 to my bill. I asked the owner to ask the guys why they had done that, as I had not been consulted; at first he was dubious that they'd remember the job "it was so long ago" (previous week).I requested he try anyway, & he called back later to say the guy did decide that on his own, and if I wanted, they would credit me back for the $19. Of course I wanted the $19.I am outraged by the labor charge and the failure to communicate with me about two guys instead of one. The explanation afterward was that if they only sent one guy, it would have taken longer and I would have been charged still more. I don't think that's a valid argument for not letting customers know at the outset the actual way the labor would be assessed, i.e. with two people. I sent the company a check for the amount the job should have cost (at $120 per hour) and it was returned to me immediately with a warning that if I did not pay the full amount they charged me within 30 days, they would take me to court. Indeed, I received a summons to small claims court, and countered with a response letter to the court outlining my position and indicating that I was on the verge of counter suing for deceptive practices. Shortly thereafter the company withdrew their suit against me, wrote to me to send the lower amount (i.e. the amount i'd originally mailed them, at the rate of $120/hr), which I immediately did. I hope they change their practices in the future and stop misleading customers by quoting one labor charge and billing at a higher labor charge.
Description of Work: Kitchen sink faucet was adjusted to make easier to operate; required replacing shutoff valves under the sink to prevent future flooding. Installed a bathroom sink faucet knob that I had purchased elsewhere. Replaced valves in toilet tank requiring removal of tank to work on. Replaced flappers in two commodes, as well as float assembly in both commodes. The work seems to be excellent, and the workers worked very hard. I am unhappy with the cost and the pricing/billing methods. I contacted them from seeing reviews on Angie's List. When I phoned, we booked a time and I was told that they charge $120/hour (less 10% Angie's discount) and that they charge in increments of 15 minutes. That sounded good -- as if you wouldn't get ripped off by work being "rounded up" to an hour. I was very surprised when the time came and two workers arrived. I asked why there were 2 and didn't really get an explanation. They worked on separate jobs, with one of them doing the running out to get supplies. They were polite and left the place fairly clean after 2.5 hrs.

Response from Baker Elman Plumbing
The member called and wanted to know why she was billed for a man and a helper. I explained that a helper isn't billed for unless he actually performs work so that it would reduce the amount of time spent on the job. Her other complaint was that we charged her for a float assembly and she did not ask us to replace it. Everything else in the tank had been replaced so we wanted to make it all new. We credited her $19.00 for the float assembly. Stock was needed to repair one of her other toilets so the helper left the job allowing the mechanic to continue to work. We went to the closest supply house to her home, which is right off of her street, and they did not have the part. Our other supply house, also in the same town she lives in, did have the part. If the mechanic were alone it would have cost her $120.00 per hour for him to get the stock and then return to complete the job. The time involved in this job could have been 5 hours of work at $120.00 per hour. Having the apprentice get the stock and work on the job, at $60.00 per hour not $75.00, shortened the overall time on the job, which saved her labor costs. If the apprentice is not required he watches and learns at no expense to the customer. In this case he was required and that actually saved her money. When we receive a call and book a job we have no idea who is going to be dispatched at that time. The two men travel together all day long required or not. - David Elman, President

The company was very flexible scheduling around my availability (but I wish they worked on Saturdays, not just during the work week). The company representative who came was on time and did the repair work fairly quickly. The major job was to replace a bathroom vanity, but he determined right away that the vanity would not fit the plumbing configuration. I appreciated that he did the measuring first and did not want to do anything to damage the custom wood vanity. Also, the owner followed up with a phone call to find out if I was satisfied that his plumber was correct in his assessment and also to see if I was going to try another vanity or sink configuration. He asked for my future business, and I will definitely give it to them.

On a Thursday evening, the hose from the dishwasher pulled out of the drain under the kitchen sink which made both the sink and the dishwasher unusable. Friday morning I called Baker Elman as well as a few other companies and got quotes. I chose to hire Baker Elman because their quote was good and I felt confidence in the company from speaking with them. Because it was snowing that day, they couldn't send anyone out until Monday morning but agreed to send someone first thing on Monday. Since the house requires several plumbing repairs, we had a new toilet installed at the same time as the plumber fixed the dishwasher hose. The plumber arrived on time, did the work quickly and accurately and was very polite the whole time. He looked at the other work that we needed to have done and said that his boss would have to come out and give us a quote for that work. We have since received that quote, found it quite reasonable and expect to start that work soon.

From my first call to the office to set up an appointment, this company was great to deal with. They set up the appointment for the very next day, even though it was not an emergency. The office was very accommodating to my schedule, and agreed to call me at work 20 minutes ahead so I could meet the plumbers at my house when they were ready. The next day they made the call, and the plumbers arrived promptly 20 minutes later.
