Dry Cleaning Service
I bought a little hand -hooked rug at a thrift store, and I wanted to get it cleaned - just for peace of mind. I took it to Star Cleaners because they claim to specialize in rug cleaning. I dropped off some clothes at the time, too. The clothes and rug were ready on time, but it wasn't till I got home and took everything out of the dry cleaning bag that I realized that the rug had been unraveled during cleaning. The rug wasn't expensive - I paid $3 for it - but it made me mad that they 1.) didn't mention to me that they'd ruined my stuff, and 2.) still charged me for cleaning it. I went back to the store and showed them the rug. The attendant claimed that it was like that when they recieved it. I explained that it wasn't: I had just bought it before I brought it to them. As proof I showed her the price tag (which was still attached to the rug). She then said that they couldn't help it if something like that happened. They just ran the rug through a machine, and they had no control over what happened to an item once it was in the machine. I insisted that I wanted a refund for the cleaning. She finally gave in, but she just went to the cash register and got out $2.50 and gave it to me. Since she didn't do an actual refund, I still paid the sales tax.
By the way, the clothes were fine. It was just your run-of-the-mill dry cleaning job. Nothing spectacularly good or bad.
Back to the rug: I know I'm not talking about a lot of money here, but the principle is the same, no matter how much money you spend. Because of their carelessness with a small item and a small complaint, I would not trust them with something that really matters to me.
