Neal The Genius Handyman

Handyman Services, Doors, Fencing,

About us

I specialize in restoration work on Victorian and Craftsman homes -- those built before 1925 -- with an eye toward preserving the integrity of their architectural styles. I enjoy restoring and reusing -- rather than replacing -- antique hardware, fixtures, woodwork, etc. But whether your home is vintage or modern or in-between, I like helping you find creative low-cost alternatives to what might otherwise be expensive repairs. I also like to do those small jobs that some other contractors don't want to bother with. I can work nights, weekends, and holidays for emergencies, or just to accommodate your schedule. No charge for consultations and estimates.

Description of Work: I actually became a member of Angie's List to find a reliable person to fix my gate. My son left a detailed message on Neal's tape. Neal NEVER returned his call! Bummer. My son fixed the gate temporarily. I didn't expect to have this experience through Angie's List

Response from Neal The Genius Handyman
I'm sorry I wasn't able to return your call. When your son called me, my phone was shut off because I was in the emergency room tending to a family member's second medical crisis that week. The following days were devoted to essential caregiving priorities. While I made sure to contact and reschedule the customers on my docket, your son's message was one of several things that fell through the cracks during that unusual time of crisis. I don't have an office staff to handle things for me on the rare occasion when I'm not available. My failure to reply to voicemails is not a common occurrence. I'm sorry I wasn't able to be more responsive about fixing your gate.

Description of Work: Neal came in, looked at what we wanted him to do and jumped in! The front door framed was quickly repaired, the long awaited hidden door bookcase was designed and parts ordered, and brainstorming started on the stall doors. Even knowing nothing about horses, he jumped in and tackled my problem of keeping escape artist horses in during storms. After much pondering and fiddling, the outside stall doors can now be locked! There is more, but let us end with this: clever, interested in everything and how to do it better. Very happy with the strange projects which are finally DONE!

Description of Work: A bunch of misc. Handyman tasks...putting in smoke alarms, a storm door on the front door, re-grouted our shower, and a few other odds and ends. |The best part was Neal didnt not hesitate to tell us he wasn't the person to do a task (our broken, double-paned windows for example) or recommend that something should be done if it wasn't necessary. | |Neal was fantastic. I would recommend him to anyone.

Description of Work: A up/down mechanism of a swivel office chair no longer worked. Neal assessed the problem, purchased & installed hardware and checked 3 additional charts for similar wear & tear. He didn't offer a guarantee because he wasn't able to purchase specialized hardware from the manufacturer which are no longer available. We thought his evaluation & charge was fair considering the problem.

I endeavor to earn straight-A's for all my work. When I get a B, I look to see what I should have done differently to improve my performance in the future. In this case, I can't tell what I should have done to earn an A. Where did I go wrong?

I endeavor to earn straight-A's for all my work. When I get a B, I look to see what I should have done differently to improve my performance in the future. In this case, I can't tell what I should have done to earn an A. What was wrong with the quality? She seemed happy with it when I was there. As for the price, this job involved careful hand-digging to avoid damaging buried utility lines (which I did encounter and did not damage) and pouring a concrete base. In addition, I had to make a second trip to the customer's house (a long drive to the north end of the county) when she received the mailbox kit she had ordered, to install it onto the post. I don't think $150 is unreasonable for all that.

I live on a winding hilly street which ices over after every snow fall. This is usually followed by some careless driver trying to drive downhill at 40 mph, spinning out of control and taking out my mailbox. Over the years we have driven multiple rebar stakes and angel irons through a small hole in the concrete sidewalk completely filling the hole. This January the inevitable happened after the 1/14 snowfall. I was unable to either drive in a new angle iron or extract the old angle irons. I called another handyman who was unable to help and suggested I get the concrete sidewalk cut, the angle irons extracted and then a new mailbox post installed with fresh concrete. All of this would have cost close to $1,000. As a last resort I called Neal. Neal worked over Saturday and Sunday and extracted the old rebar and angle irons and installed a new mailbox. There were moments as i watched Neal struggle when I was willing to call it quits and call in a concrete company to tear into the sidewalk. However, Neal persisted and triumphed!

The dog door installation turned into a difficult project due to the thickness of our wall - it was several inches of layered wood and other materials. Neal was very professional, reliable, and skilled, doing a beautiful job. He made many, many trips to Home Depot replacing blades in particular, and trips to his shop to do metal cutting, in order to get the job done correctly. He finished on Thanksgiving day, which was absolutely not expected, but he wanted to get the door in and finished. We will absolutely be using Neal in the future, as our old house needs lots of attention!

I had called several people from Angie's List to get an estimate on the cost of repairing my carport (rotting beam and post). Out of the 3 companies contacted, only 2 replied immediately. The first was going to charge $276 (this was with a discount). Neal was the second with a charge of $111 (he needed no discounts). The third called after the job was completed. We can't say enough on how impressed we were with Neal's prompt reply and the professional job he did on the repairs. He showed up on time and accomplished the work with in a very timely manner. It was a pleasure doing business with him, and we will be contacting him in the future for other projects that need doing.
Description of Work: We have a covered carport in the back of my house that consists of wood beams, aluminum siding, and wood and steel posts supporting it. One of the main beams, of the roof, was rotting out and needed replacing. There also was a post that was rotting out that held the main structure up. We had bought the material expecting to do the repairs ourselves. But then realized that we would have to buy materials to construct a support to hold the roof up while doing the repairs or some kind of lift to support it. Not only did Neal & his helper Brian replaced all existing rotting wood, he also made a suggestion on how to prevent the post from rotting in the future and implemented that suggestion. It was not an easy job since the main structure needed to be supported while replacing the beam. He had all the necessary equipment with him to accomplish the task and did an excellent job. I have other projects that need to be done, and Neal will be called in the future.

I had called Neal today and although it was 8pm, he was willing to come out tonight! I felt bad about this, but he was happy to do it. He came promptly (even though it was way across town). I've lived in this house for a year and my smoke alarms are all wired into the ceilings. I was able to remove four of them, but this particular one was painted shut. I was afraid if I forced it too hard it would break or damage some wiring and then it would be really expensive to replace. Neal was able to remove it from the ceiling carefully and then was able to open it up to remove the battery. Although it was painted shut, and the plastic casing was old and even a little warped...he did it without damaging anything. Of course I felt silly having to call someone to do this but I figured it was money well spent because if something broke or the wiring got damaged...then there would be someone to fix it right then and there. Neal is very skilled and he is respectful and courteous and a very very nice man. This experience was such a pleasant surprise! I will be using him again for other tasks that I will need.

Neal has become my handyman-of-choice, having used his services in the past with great satisfaction. Neal is among the most diligent workers with whom I have ever had the pleasure of contracting. Not only does he perfect the contracted project, but he offers excellent advice concerning other areas with problems that need attention. Neal and Brian installed metal flashing to the bottom of the deck; and the finished product not only offers a protective barrier, but it is also attractive and detracts nothing from the deck.

By any description, Neal is, indeed, a genius!! He is professional, very gifted, creative, and conscientious, along with being very pleasant and helpful. Nothing escapes his notice, and his suggestions are extremely valuable. The trim on the shed was done with treated wood and looks very attractive. He spent a good deal of time and effort in installing the flashing around another shed, and we expect this will dissuade small animals from relocating to our yard. We have accepted Neal's bid to install flashing around our pool deck, as well, for the same purpose. When I mentioned the problem with the leaky hose and water buildup near the foundation of the house, Neal explored two suppliers in trying to find the "ancient" part to repair the hose in the least costly and least disruptive way. It was a very effective solution. Neal is the handyman you want when you have problems that can be solved creatively, cost effectively, and in a timely manner.
Description of Work: Neal replaced some deteriorating untreated wooden trim at the bottom of our shed, installed flashing deep into the ground around another shed to deter animals, and repaired a faulty hose fixture.

One very cold winter night--the middle of the night of course--an interior pipe in my house froze and burst. It began to flood under my kitchen and guest room and I called a plumber who at least turned off the water but then told me he had to completely tear my floors up to replace the burst pipe. The charge would be $7,000 not including replacing the floors and carpeting! I called Neal and he did some research and came up with a fix that involved rerouting the pipe using $76 worth of parts. That was five years ago and the pipe has been just fine since. I paid him around $200 and thanked my lucky stars that I had found Neal the Genius Handyman! He left my house neat and clean (which some plumbers don't) and was polite and professional, which a lot of plumbers aren't. I give him an "A" for extraordinary work!

The condo is 25 years old and had experienced some settling which made the front door and one bedroom door fit their door frames less than perfect. Neal was punctual in his arrival. He surveyed the situation with the doors, suggested steps he would take to make repairs, and after I approved, he proceeded to complete the work. The front door required a replacement plastic seal on the bottom to seal against the threshold. We agreed that repair would wait for his next trip to this side of town (about ten days later). He planed the bedroom door so it closed properly in the door frame. This was a small repair to-do list, admittedly. Total cost was $120, which seemed reasonable considering the time and effort he put into the repairs. The front door now seals extremely well in the door frame and wind gusts no longer are felt from under the door. It seems to seal very tightly now. I believe Neal is a "one man band," and I appreciate doing business with small businesses whenever possible. I would use his services again. I think he is a true handyman -- I get the idea he has the experience to perform just about any odd job around a residence. And, he's a pleasant fellow to deal with.
