Exterior Painting
Yes, I recommend this pro
$4,000
James and Scott were terrific to work with from Padilla Painting.  They've worked as painters in the past, but have now started 'Padilla Painting', associated with the Padilla Pools and Landscaping business here in San Jose (see the ratings for Padilla Pools - they get very high marks.  Family run business.  They came out, surveyed the house and talked with us about what we wanted done, and provided a written quote on the spot.  Reasonable prices, and we were having our pool redone by Padilla, so we went with them.
I can't recommend their work highly enough.  We essentially got a custom paint job on the house for less than many 'blow and go' places charge.  Great attention to detail, friendly, and prompt.  They showed up when they said they would, and did exactly what they promised.  We felt completely comfortable having them working around the house.  Good guys.
My wife had fallen in love with the paint on a house a few blocks away from ours.  James and Scott followed me over there, we knocked on the door, and asked if we could try to find a color match.  They were both very professional, and matched both Kelly Moore and Benjamin Moore paints as closely as they could.  They picked up samples of both brands and painted a corner of our garage so we could compare, and we went with Benjamin Moore.  That paint was a little more expensive, but James was good about being upfront on the additional cost - we weren't surprised by anything.
In painting the house they suggested a three-color scheme, the base color, trim color, and then a black for the front door and the roof beam.  We weren't sold on painting the roof beams black, so James took a photo of his house painted this way and texted it over.  Then he painted one beam black and one the base color, just so we could compare.  They made it easy to say yes, and they understood our hesitancy and accommodated us.  In the end we went with the black beams, and they were right - the house looks great!
We also had a couple of small side-jobs that they helped us with.  We had an old antenna and a satellite dish we wanted removed from the roof.  There were some big bulky items in the side yard that needed to get to the dump.  And we had a balcony roof that was leaking a bit.  In each case they took a look, quoted us a small price increase, and got someone in to do the work.  They really tackled anything we asked them to do, no grumbling, no hemming and hawing about not really wanting to take on more - just a professional 'Yes, we can do that for you' and a very reasonable price.  It's a pleasure to have people who work that way.
And they were flexible too - we ordered a new garage door, but it's a special order and hasn't arrived yet.  They're coming back out to paint the new door, even though they went ahead painted the old door for us.  And I just received a call this past week from James, he wanted to come out with his roofing guy and test to make sure our balcony roof isn't leaking anymore.  He proactively called me.  So many times it's the other way around, and you have to chase the contractor day after day until they show up.  That's not the case with these guys.
They even hung new lighting fixtures on the house for us, replacing the originals.  In one case this required some acrobatics by the two of them on ladders, in the hot sun.  But they got it done.  Much appreciated, and it really complements the new paint job nicely.
If you're looking to have your house painted, I'd suggest giving Padilla Painting a call and have Jim and Scott out for a quote.  The worst thing you'll have is more data, the best thing will be a shiny new paint job!
