College Animal Hospital

Veterinarians,

About us

College Animal Hospital has been serving the neighborhoods of San Diego State University (SDSU) for over 40 years. Dr. Christine van Spronsen has owned and operated the hospital since 1995. For over 15 years, she and her small staff have worked hard to provide the best veterinary care possible to these surrounding neighborhoods. Dr. van Spronsen provides general medicine, surgery, and preventative care. She wants to be your pet’s “family doctor” and your partner in caring for your pet. At College Animal Hospital they care about both ends of the leash (or carrier), and they strive for smiles on both ends. (To avoid pain and discomfort to your pet, and to insure that the entire mouth is examined, cleaned and treated, we only do dentals with full anesthetics)

Dr. van Spronsen has taken care of my cats for over a decade. I have adopted numerous rescue cats and cared for them for over 30 years in the San Diego area. I am an experienced cat owner who has received services from many local vets before being referred to Dr. van Spronsen. I will not entrust the care of my cats to any other vet, and that includes our local emergency vets unless there is a dire need for immediate treatment. I have a cat with a thyroid condition who requires regular check ups so I have current and frequent observations and interactions to comment on. Dr. van Spronsen is well-educated, has an outstanding professional demeanor, is very caring and compassionate, and has been spot on when trying to pinpoint the source of a cat's illness or discomfort. She listens closely to pet owners and can decipher the layperson's descriptions and turn them into clinically valuable clues. Her diagnostic testing, recommendations and treatment are conservative and reasonably priced. She is able to handle difficult, freaked out, stressed out or skidish cats and their concerned owners. She reviews lab results quickly and calls immediately to report the findings. She frequently comments on recent training or seminars she has attended which gives me the feeling that she strives to be up to date in veterinary medicine. Dr. van Spronsen has performed successful surgical procedures for my pets including abscess, biopsy, mass removal and teeth cleaning. Her staff is friendly and will always assist me with a short notice appointment if there is an urgent situation. I do not have any problems scheduling a convenient appointment time. Yes, her office is dated, but it keeps my costs down and is very quaint. She also has office pets who are a joy to see. Remember, you will pay for a slick, fancy office with a higher cost for each service item. A high-end office does not equal high-end vet care. The quality of veterinary medicine comes directly from the qualities of the practitioner. The focus should be on the very best available treatment for you beloved pet. I disagree with a previous reviewer that the office is not clean. It is very clean and since I come in early or late I get to see the routine daily deep cleaning going on. Although I have commented on cat services, I see a wide variety of dogs coming in for treatment too. If you are looking for an established community veterinarian who will care for your pet throughout their life stages, I would confidently recommend Dr. van Spronsen.

I have been taking my two pitbulls here for about three years. The receptionists and the Doc are great with my dogs. Both dogs sense that Dr. Spronsen is the boss, she definitely knows how to handle them.

The receptionist had no personality, handed me paperwork to fill out and that was it.The appt was 15+ min late with no explanation, the waiting room was small and very worn. This made me look closer at everything! The Vet was very personable but I would be very hesitant to have any work done at this business due to cleanliness, worn equipment (the table that animals were to be treated on was wobbly) and the lack of communication from staff.

The experience went very well. The staff is really nice. They are very good about getting me in on short notice. They are very personable. It is just one vet who is in the office and she has been there for long time. I would recommend people to go there.

Our Shih Tzu mix dog has been under the care of Dr. vanSpronsen, College Animal Hospital, since 2009 when he first came to live with us as a puppy. Her staff is very friendly and excellent with our pet. Dr. vanSpronsen is dedicated, extremely knowledgeable and we feel fortunate our pet is in her hands. Our dog was just neutered, chipped and teeth cleaned. He recovered well. All of our questions or concerns are answered by Dr. vanSpronsen. Our little guy loves her even after his surgery!

It's scary to find a new vet--I really wanted to find the right place, and I did. Everyone was friendly, pleasant, and communicative. I searched several review sites, including Angie's List, and all gave Dr. Van Spronsen positive comments. All the services and prices were explained beforehand, with optional services (additional blood work, medication, microchip, etc) available if I desired. I very much appreciated being given the choice, and not being forced to pay for additional stuff I didn't think was needed, especially since I'm on a limited budget. I appreciate that I received quality service at a reasonable price. Too, I appreciate that everything was explained before and after, and in person. Dr. Van Spronsen talked to me personally about how my cat did in surgery, how to care for him, what to expect, etc. Other vets have assistants just hand the cat over and have you read a piece of paper. I wanted more than that. The office is small and that's just fine by me. I'm going to have the past history of my other cat forwarded to this office, and use this vet from now on.

This vet is the best. Her scope and depth of knowledge is very impressive. She can quickly diagnose what is wrong with the animal and get started on the appropriate treatment. The staff is very supportive and friendly.

The overall experience was excellent, as usual. Dr. Van Spronsen is a wonderful vet, and truly cares about all her ''patients''. She also takes as much time as is necessary in order to make sure everything is discussed, and that all options are spelled out. I have been going to this vet for over 12 years, and would recommend her highly.

DR. VAN SPRONSEN IS THE BEST VET I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED ... YOU CAN SEE THAT SHE'S TRULY CONCERNED ABOUT EACH DOG, AND THAT SHE JUST ISN'T ''IN IT FOR THE MONEY''. SHE IS ALWAYS ON TIME, NEVER RUSHED, AND TREATS YOU LIKE YOU AND YOUR DOGS ARE HER ONLY FOCUS EVER. OF THE FIVE VETS THAT I'VE HAD OVER THE COURSE OF 10 YEARS, DR. VAN SPRONSEN AND HER STAFF STAND ABOVE EVERYONE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I WAS FIRST ATTRACTED TO THEM BECAUSE OF THE INITIAL FREE EXAM. VETERINARIAN WAS VERY RESPONSIVE AND INFORMATIVE. SHE DIDN'T TRY TO GET US TO DO A LOT OF WORK ON OUR KITTEN THAT WASN'T NECESSARY. THE OFFICE STAFF WAS FUN AND VERY WARM MANNERED. A GREAT ENVIRONMENT.
