Southern Dutchman
We hired Southern Dutchman aka Ken Poortvliet in February 2022, to come and replace the old window shutters on the front of our home with new shutters. Ken installed some of the shutters upside down. Ken broke 2 of our window screens trying to put his ladder up near the house. Some of the shutters holes were mis drilled. Ken also damaged our siding on our home during the old shutter removal. Ken never showed up on time as agreed upon to start our project. Ken never returned phone calls or txt messages in a timely matter. The shoddy workmanship and quality were horrible. I would never hire this man again for any project on our home. Home owners beware. You do not want this man in and around your home working on a project. I seriously doubt this man is insured and licensed. Ken Poortvliet has a very deceptive website. I would never hire Southern Dutchman aka Ken Poortvliet for any home project

Richard was prompt in getting back to me with the initial contact and then with the estimate. The estimate was provided on 6/19/11, and the work began the following day on Monday, 6/20/11. My punch list included both interior and exterior jobs. Richard was leaving for a trip on 6/20/11, and had informed me that his 2 adult children who work with him, would perform the exterior tasks for me on Monday, 6/20/11. His son called me first thing Monday morning and established a start time, and they showed up right on time. They were both very pleasant and professional. They began work about 9:30 am and finished around 3:30 pm the same day. I was very pleased with the work they did, the time it took them to complete the work, and the cost. As soon as Richard returns from his trip, he will contact me to setup a time to complete the interior jobs we discussed. I will submit a separate report when that work is completed. So far, I can say that I would, and will, use this service again in the future

Richard was great. He provided a very detailed estimate and did the work exactly as he said he would. In fact, in many cases he went above and beyond the estimate and did work that was not specified just because he saw that it needed to be done. He was on the job 100% of the time which was a plus for us when selecting him. His adult children work with him so they have the same work ethic as him. Have to say it took a few days longer than some of the bigger paint companies, but his scope of work is much greater and the quality and attention to detail was well worth the wait

I hired House Doctors to replace and two doors with new ones, to paint the new doors and some shutters, and to install a ceiling exhaust fan and run a vent for it. The work was ultimately completed successfully, but communication was slow and unreliable throughout the process. Additionally, I would emphasize that you get what you pay for in terms of work quality. I'll use the painting as an example. In contrast to when I last hired an actual painter for a paint project, this paint work was done sloppily. Doors were not taken off their hinges, did not have their hardware removed, and were not masked in anyway. As a result, their are now paint marks on all the hardware and hinges. Similarly, my shutters were painted on the wall rather than being removed, so there are now small paint marks on the siding behind them. They are not major, or noticeable from a distance, but they are there and are disappointing. If you want a variety of small jobs done at once, there are advantages to a handyman service, but if precision is important to you, hire specialists instead

Richard has performed many jobs for me for the past four years. He has cut down trees, repaired my deck,put new railings around my deck, built a raised garden bed, painted the trim on my house and replaced rotten wood where necessary. He has also done maintenance on outside tools and he has power washed the house several times. He has replaced gutters that were chewed by squirrels and he has cleaned my gutters twice a year. He helped me design a front porch railing that was elaborate and unique and then he built it. Inside, Richard has worked on my bathrooms by changing the floors to tile, replaced toilets, and built frames for around my mirrors. He added chair railing, and has done some minor electrical work. He also repaired my indoor window shutters. No job seems too big or too small for him. He is extremely efficient and thorough and he cleans up so that you would never know he has been here.He completes work that would take other handymen a week in half that time. Everything is done with expertise. Richard's daughter occasionally helps and she is also very professional. I have no qualms about leaving him in my home and I usually just give him a key that he keeps until the job is done. I trust him completely

We had an excellent experience getting a new roof with JTC about six years ago, and to be fair I meant to jump on and write a very positive review then. However, we've since had some serious water damage along one section of eaves / soffit, to the point where we've now had water run down through our wall/flooring and into our HVAC ducts. I've emailed twice and called but haven't gotten any response at all. At this point, I'll try someone else, but I did have a very positive initial impression and would have thought that JTC would have at least come out to take a look at the problem for me

I have been wanting to hook up a rain water capture system for several years. Had everything in place but the connections from house downspouts to 1500 gallon tank I wanted the water routed to. New 6 inch gutters with leafguards last year, slopped to one end of the house, new downspouts. I had several people come out and look at what I needed but no one wanted to do it because they had "never done something like that." I tried to do it myself but quickly realized that I could not do it. Contacted these guys. They drove down, looked at the project, had some doubts, but gave it some thought. They decided they could do it and scheduled the work. They arrived as scheduled with everything they might need. They were here about 3 or 4 hours. Without supervision they went straight to work routing and installing my rain water drainage to my tank. Upon completion I was very pleased to see that the work was done very well, well thought out, well installed. No fuss, no bother, no complaints about the job. They just showed up and did the job as requested. I have had my 1500 gallon tank for 4 years now. It is finally connected to my system. Just got in a new Cub Cadet tiller. Ready for a new garden. These guys are very good, smart guys. They do replacement windows, gutters, vinyl siding, all since 1985

We applied online for an estimate and the next morning we were contacted by David and made arrangements for him to come to our home in Port Charlotte. He arrived early and explained what some of our options were. He then took measurements of all of our windows and door. Within two days he e-mailed us his detailed proposal listing each window, the price, etc. After at least 3 revisions we decided to have hurricane shutters installed on our three garage windows and impact windows on the rest of our home along with a motorized roll-down shutter on our lanai. We signed the contract the middle of April and the next week someone came to take final measurements and the windows, shutters, and door were ordered. On June 30th two crews were sent to begin installation and everything was installed in one day. They worked efficiently and the installations were very well done. The next day the inspector came and everything was passed by the County. On July 2nd a man was sent to repair some sill damage that occurred when the large living room window was installed. We are very pleased with the end results. The new windows are very high quality and give our 40 year old home an up to date appearance

They were fine. They did a good job. They ended up rescheduling the first appointment I made because the guy they were going to send out didn't have a ladder and I have a 2-story house. They rescheduled and came a couple of days later. They did a perfectly good job as far as I can tell. They cleaned up. I had purchased the shutters so all they had to do was take down the old ones and install the new ones. It was a pretty straightforward job and they seemed to know what they were doing. I didn't compare the price but I thought it was probably fair.
