Southern Michigan Radon Inc
5.0
After testing our radon levels twice and they came back high both times, I contacted Southern Michigan Radon Inc. They came to the house the next day and before he left I received an estimate on the total cost of the system. The next day I met with my neighbor who had a similar system installed by a company in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and his cost was significantly higher. I called Southern Michigan Radon Inc. and awarded them the job. They said they would be there in four days and showed up on the date they said they would be there and completed the job in less than a day. Before the installer left he explained how everything worked and what the meter on the side of the pipe measured. It has worked just fine from the day of installation. I am very happy with the results and it was a professional and timely installation. I highly recommend Southern Michigan Radon Inc. for the installation of radon reduction systems.

Northland Basement Systems
3.0
This did not go well. Northland Basement has a three step program to get started on Radon Testing and Mitigation as reflected on their web site. STEP 1: Contact us by calling or e-mailing us. STEP 2: Our Radon Gas Measurement Specialist will install the Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM). This visit will take about five minutes, during which time the specialist makes sure that the CRM is placed in the best location in your house. The specialist will also make sure you're informed of the required conditions for accurate testing. STEP 3: The specialist will return after a minimum of 48 hours have passed. During this second meeting, the specialist will print your radon testing results right there on the spot. This process should take between 10 and 15 minutes. I received a phone call from the company representative on the day he was suppose to come to my home. He asked what I wanted to do and I told him I was expecting them to retest my home for radon and then could decide what action, if any, to take for mitigation. So, what they state on the web site differs from the work that they will actually perform. The person in the office who scheduled my appointment stated that radon mitigation could cost anywhere from $800 to $1500. The Northland Basement Systems representative who was coming to my home said that costs start at $1250. First red flag. Then he told me they don't do testing but he would mail me a test kit if I wanted it retested. Second red flag. He basically wanted to come and tell me how much it would cost for radon mitigation and install a radon mitigation system. All that he was telling me was in direct conflict with what their web site states (see above and attached picture). As you can see their web site states they will set up the Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) and come back in about 48 hours. They will print out the results on the spot and if the result is above EPA standards they will give a free estimate to install a radon mitigation system. I don't want to invest in a system without confirmation that radon exists. Also, if you look on the internet, several sites indicate that short-term radon tests are not accurate which is why I wanted confirmation of the Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) test. I'm sure this company would do a good job of installing a radon mitigation system; however, they need to follow their guidelines as stated on their web site or change the web site to agree with the work they will actually perform. Also, both the office representative and the company representative who was scheduled to come to my home didn't seem to know what was on the web site. They really need to correct their web site because I was basing my decision to hire them based on what they said they would do.

The contractor came out and gave us a quote per our scheduled time. On the day of the install he was on time, worked a half day until finished. He gave us 2 options of where we wanted it installed to best be hidden out of plain sight. We used a $25 off coupon from Angie's List which he honored no problem.

Radon Contractor Testing and Mitigation

Everting went excellent. My initial Radon reading was 11.3 pCi/I (EPA Standard is 4.0 pCi/I) and after installation for a 2 day test the reading was .4 pCi/I. I had purchased an electronic monitor and this reading has remained constant since installation in April 2017.

Radon Systems
4.0
Radon Systems came out and look the situation over and provided estimate. My basement floor had a 1/2'' gap around the perimeter which needed to be caulked. They needed me to move everything away from the walls 3'for access, which just wasn't possible. So, I caulked the basement myself. The exterior vent pipe needed to be run up the side of the house to above the roof line. My old house had a difficult roof detail to work around and I wanted the pipe to be run as close to the house as possible to reduce visibility. I ended up installing that pipe myself as well. Once those 2 things were finished Radon Systems came out and installed the reduction system. The work inside the house was neat and clean. The fan mounted outside the house however was installed crooked and the connecting pipes were not parrallel to the house. Otherwise the installation was fine. Our radon levels went from 6.3 to .3, so the system is working great.

Recent Review: As a first time home buyer, I am so glad we had Patrick for our inspection. He was incredibly thorough and spent a lot of time with us. In addition to leaving no stone unturned, he gave us great tips on home maintenance. I would highly recommend this service!

Recent Review: The system works great and we don't have radon in our basement anymore! However, the actual pipes they installed rattle against the side of our house and is so bad I can't sleep at night. I have called and emailed repeatedly, including sending them pictures and they refuse to even call me back.

Recent Review: The price was good because the other estimates were $4000 after they were here for two minutes. RemTek was here for a half hour, walked around on the roof, looked around, spent a lot of time talking to me and explaining everything to me that was going to go on. They were thorough and the price was lower than I expected. They called to double-check as they were the ones that actually helped me to get the contractor for the ceiling, because they had to take the ceiling down to do the remediation. They were concerned about health, as well as getting everything done because they wanted to make sure I was OK. They just care, are concerned and give quality.

Recent Review: Mike was able to arrange a prompt radon test and inspection to occur within days of my call. He was responsive by email and phone. On the day of the visit, he was already present on my arrival. He did a detailed walk through of the exterior and interior which lasted approximately 3 hours (3200 sq foot house plus basement). No detail was left untouched and lots of good recommendations were made. By the following morning, he provided a detailed report with pictures of the house and outstanding issues. I would recommend Mike to all home buyers. He was recommended by a friend who used him outside of a realtor deal.

Recent Review: Scott Manifold and staff are very professional. The estimate was reasonable and he stuck with it. He explained in detail the options we had and was honest about (reasonable) operating cost and any limitations the system might have. Installation was less than a day and he showed up at the time expected. He patiently addressed my husband's many updates and questions. When the radon came back at a level meeting national standards but exceeding my husband's comfort level, a larger fan was installed for an additional $100. I would completely recommend contacting Southern Michigan Radon for honest radon detection and reduction services.

Recent Review: Promptly responded when we first contacted them for an estimate and work was begun the next week after the estimate was given. They explained what would be done and answered all questions we had about radon and a radon mitigation system. Very knowledgeable and informative. Came back three days later to pick up radon monitor and discovered that additional work needed to be done (at no extra cost to us) so that radon levels were below 4.0. A larger fan was installed and additional pipes added in basement so that radon level finally reached 1.3. They were persistent in coming back each time to check radon levels and did additional work until the radon levels reached 1.3.

Recent Review: Provided a 4 day radon test (48 hour test option too) with electronic testing machines and instant results. They tested 2 separate locations simultaneously. I was impressed. Mitch had a lot of knowledge and answered a lot of questions. He even met with me (the buyer) after meeting with the seller at a different location. I would recommend this company to do your testing for radon in the home buying process due to their knowledge, electronic testing machines, instant results and customer service. They do remediation too if needed but we only used them for testing.

Recent Review: A home inspection prior to selling the house revealed excessively high radon levels. Living out of town, I contacted Radon Systems by phone and asked them to install a system in the house. They installed a radon mitigation system and ran radon level tests confirming that radon levels are currently well with acceptable limits. Although I cannot personally inspect the system, their professionalism and reputation make me believe that the job meets the highest standards.
