Reading & Son Plumbing Inc

The company that did the original radon abatement on the house attached the vent stack with zip ties. These failed in high winds and that company is no longer in business. Reading & Sons came out, salvaged what they could of the original stack and reinstalled the radon stack. During installation of the stack they informed us there was no sheathing under the aluminum siding to attach the stack to. We had bracing installed in the attic and Reading & Sons came back out to firmly anchor the stack to the new bracing. I wish they had done the original radon abatement! They were prompt and professional.

The owners were very responsive in getting to us to formulate a plan for remediation. They were extremely knowledgeable about radon and its effects on people's health, and were nice to deal with. That same week, their installation team came out and installed the system. The system was excellent from the standpoint of functionality and aesthetics. We were extremely impressed with the team who came to do the installation. The men were very knowledgeable and worked hard to complete the job. They answered any questions we had in a very professional way, and were very nice about it. The job was completed in a very timely manner. The team also did a great job of cleaning up the areas where they had been working. After the installation we ran a new radon test, and the results were excellent.

My wife had been paying attention to the publicity being given to the Radon issue and asked me to look into it. I was not impressed with the issue at all. After all we have lived in the house for 35 years, raised 3 children to adulthood and had no health issues. I did get a Radon measurement and it ranged between 7.5 and 9 picocuries per litre. Under 4 is acceptable. So this wasn't a huge issue but I was about to remodel the basement anyway. I contacted Amy Miller the Mitigation Professional at Reading and Son Plumbing. for a quote and review of what needed to be done. She was very professional and efficient and in fact was available to answer questions as I had them through my remodeling as to how the Radon Mitigation work could fit in without being an eyesore in the remodeled area. Another concern I had was the Radon Fan noise. I had been told It was substantial. She assured me that it was a low hum and not loud at all. The workman showed up and completed the entire job in 6-8 hours. He explained all the components of the system to me and I don't hear the fan at all. I would certainly recommend Reading and Son Plumbing for this project if you need to have it done. The measured radon level now ranges between 1 and 1.6 according to a Radon detector I purchased.

This is the third time we have used Greater Peoria Property Inspections. Mr. Murphy is punctual, extremely thorough and takes the time to go through the house with you and answer any questions. He offers his thoughts on the condition of the house, points out any items to keep in mind for the future and gives his recommendations on how any issues should be handled. He provides a detailed color report of the inspection results. I would highly recommend Greater Peoria Property Inspections to anyone purchasing a home, wanting input on issues they may have when selling a home or someone to oversee work being done on their home.

He explained all the good and not-so-good things about the property; including the out building. He found things I never even thought to look for. He took his time while he climbed and crawled looking for any potential issues. I was impressed. I've bought many properties over the years for investment as well as residential purposes. The following day I received a complete PDF of the inspection. I would definitely hire him again.

MidAmerica Basement Systems - Peoria

The installers arrived later, but with a phone call. No problem. They then quickly worked to dig up the inside foundation, install a Triple Safe Sump pump, channel system, and a radon system. They were professional, got the work done in 2 days, and came back once to install something that was left out prior to. We have not had any major rains as of yet, so I don't know if it works, but I'm assuming if everything was installed properly, we will have no problems. The radon system was installed, and it is working. However, it took our radon from 5 to 2.7. While this is a reduction, it is still above what the government suggests as acceptable for a radon system (the little pamphlet that comes back with the radon test results said to try and get the gas to below 2). We called Midamerica on this and they said they would come out and check. They did, and they were prompt. It was suggested that we test again, at our expense, and then they would try and seal around the dewatering system to prevent gas coming up or down through that. We have not received our test kits to retest the gas, and when we do I will add to this post. Midamerica said, contractually, all they had to do was to get the radon below 4. While this is the case, since we spent nearly $1000 on the system, I would like it to be below the recommended 2. In all, I would recommend Midamerica, as of today, to anyone needed a dewatering system. The installers worked well and quick and were professional. They promptly addressed our issues. Additionally, I will add to this review once we have had a large rain. Update: They are working with us to mitigate the radon to under 2. A man came out and sealed the dewatering system further to prevent air from coming up through the ground. They gave us 2 more tests and we will test again. They have been great about working with us. After the two tests, the radon is under 1. Good stuff! The dewatering system also needed to be buried outside. It wasn't done initially because the ground was frozen. They contacted us, and promptly buried the pipes outside. We have a watering system outside, and I don't think they hit anything. I will have to check on that. But I know they were careful. We also needed more pipe outside, so as to ensure the water was piped far enough away from the house. They came out and did that for an additional fee. Update: we have had tons of rain, and were able to test if the system worked. It did keep buckets of water out of our basement. However, something was not installed correctly, as all of the cement poured over the trench is completely damp. When we called, we were told this was normal. However, it is not normal to have water wicking up through the floor. We opened the little access points to see what was up in the channels, and there is an inch to two inches of sitting water. We think this wasn't graded properly and the water isn't draining into the sump as it should. We insisted that someone come out, and the woman on the line was very rude. The earliest someone could come out was in a month. We paid thousands of dollars for this, and it should be working correctly. Waterproofing shouldn't mean water wicking up through the cement they poured. I will update when they come back and check it. Update: Gary came out around 4:30pm on July 22, 2015. This was after a month of waiting. When I asked when he would arrive, the same rude lady that I spoke to earlier, said she couldn't give a time, but that it would be late afternoon. So, I waited by the phone all day until he called. When Gary arrived, he was immediately rude and condescending. There are areas of the channel in the floor that are not connected underground with the plastic. These are the areas where there is the most water wicking up through the cement. When Gary spoke with me, he consistently was rude, abrasive, and condescending. He told me it was condensation and there was nothing else he could say. When I asked for further explanation, Gary said, "What do you do?" He then said, "I have worked at this job and been in the classroom for years." He then said, after I told him my line of work, "I wouldn't come to your job and tell you how to graphic design. I wouldn't tell you how to draw the lines and where to put the pictures." This was unprofessionalism to the extreme. He continued this unprofessionalism every time I asked a question, and then proceeded to tell me that if he were to open the little access panel to check inside the channel system, he would charge $65 for an evaluation. He said he would waive the fee, but I am not sure if that will happen. Overall, I am dissatisfied with the customer service, to say the least. Basically, the answer is that this water around the perimeter is because we have a humid basement and if we want to alleviate the problem, we need to install a (surprise!) very expensive dehumidifier in the basement. Guess who sells those? You got it. I have recommended this company to two other people. I now regret that. Perhaps there are good experiences with Midamerica Basement. Maybe it depends upon whom you are designated. Gary was from Iowa. Maybe those locally are more professional. Who knows. But, I do know that I will never recommend this company. Perhaps if there were a level of professionalism and general customer service, this story would end differently. Update: August. 2015: they decided to give us a trial of a dehumidifier to see if that will help the problem. We are unsure if it has helped because we have had little rain. I'm not certain, aside from redoing the perimeter, that they could fix this. I'm pretty sure it was simply installed incorrectly.

The crew of 4 arrived promptly at the appointed time, laid down runners even in my garage area. Added additional runners down the stairway to the basement and across the carpeted basement. They arrived at 8AM, and left after 4PM hardly taking time off for lunch. All 4 were experienced, professional and it was very plain they were proud of their work ethics. Throughout the day the foreman checked with the owner to confirm the work was being done to his satisfaction. My wife and I had to leave for 2 hours and had no qualms of leaving the house in their capable hands. All 4 were high caliber employees dressed well and acted with dignity After the work was completed Dan went through the entire work explaining it fully and asked if there were any questions or complaints. They had cleaned up the work site, hauled away the trash and even swept the floor. They thanked us for the opportunity to be of service and left us being a completely satisfied customer. In my 83 years of life, I have never been happier doing business with someone. I would recommend David Smith and his wife Sue to anyone with a radon problem.

This company has it all together. Very, very professional and obviously knowledgeable. I would HIGHLY recommend their services. The result also was excellent......prior to mitigation the reading was 9, after mitigation it dropped to <1.3. I assume the less than symbol meant it was really, really low. Use them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you will not be disappointed.

This is our second inspection with Mr. Murphy and he met or exceeded all of our expectations from our previous experience. Mr. Murphy provided a thorough inspection and discussed everything he found as we were going through the house. He was very open and honest and answered all of my questions. We received a extremely detailed report the next day. We had initially planned a termite and radon test but Mr. Murphy was upfront that with certain issues with the home in its current state we should really wait for both of those tests to avoid inaccurate results. We hope this is the last inspection we have to have for a few years but if our search ultimately continues we will contact him again.

What do customers in Washington say about Mitigate Radon?

They answered the phone the first time I called and were VERY friendly! They scheduled me one week later and promptly sent a summary email. They arrived on time and did a great job--very mindful of the fact I will be finishing my basement. They tucked the pipe away in an inconspicuous spot. Very good craftsmanship and were finished quickly. Great people to do business with!!
