Reviews in Pacific Palisades to Building a Pergola

Burros Contractor Services
Mr. Burros did a wonderful job at repairing my 20 yr old wood pergola. Not only was he very professional, and offered very fair pricing, but very flexible with time frame completion due to weather related issues (which halted the repair for a few days). As soon as the weather cleared enough to finish the job, he made it happen. He is very knowledgeable and safe when it comes to his projects. We are back to enjoying our patio, especially during this time of quarantine. I would definitely hire again!

Zen Craftsmen
Greg & his crew were great. Reasonable estimate, showed up when he said he would, and finished the job when he said it would be done. We had them install a Pergola "kit" from J&W Lumber that we just never had the time to put up. They did a top-notch job and we are proud of the way it looks. Good workmanship and they cleaned up the job site. I will be using them again.

Lawn Master Outdoor Living LLC
This company is an absolute joke! I contacted them on May 1st regarding a custom pergola that I wanted them to make. They told me that their local sales manager would contact me shortly to schedule a meeting so that he could take all of the necessary measurements and provide pricing. On May 4th, Jeffrey reached out and said that he would be happy to come out to my house and get all of the necessary measurements in order to move forward. We emailed back and forth multiple times about the project details, spoke on the phone on several occasions, and Jeff just kept wasting time. I answered all of his questions, but during our next discussion, he would just ask the same questions again…it was as though he wasn’t even paying attention. Perhaps it was a case of selective amnesia? I kept asking him, “can we schedule a meeting?”, but he would just say “I might be free this week; what is your address?”. I provided the address and confirmed a day, only for him to say that day/time wouldn’t work and he would need to “look at his schedule.” Sometimes he would be “looking at his schedule” for several days before I heard from him again, only for him to AGAIN ask me about the project details (which we already discussed many times), and to AGAIN ask for my address (which I also already provided). This went on for several weeks, and there were many times I considered looking for a different company (which, in retrospect, I definitely should have done), but I persisted, figuring that I had already spent so much time dealing with this childish nincompoop, and that it would be a bigger waste of time to find another company at this point. He finally provided me with an estimate of $25k-30k for the project, which I agreed to. Eventually, he agreed to visit my house on May 22nd…almost an entire month after my initial contact. He was supposed to show up at 11am, but even after giving him my address several times, he got lost and somehow ended up in an entirely different city…How does that even happen? My address isn’t unusual, or obscure in any way. It’s a very normal address: it has a house number, a street name, a city, a state, and a zip code. The sole purpose of his entire job is to visit customers and get measurements, and yet he clearly doesn’t have the mental capacity to understand a simple address, or even how to use GPS. So, after giving him the address AGAIN, he finally shows up 90 minutes later. He spent the next hour taking measurements, and again told me that the price would be $25k-30k, which I again agreed to. He said he would get the measurements to his engineers, and would have the drawings finished in a few days. Fast forward to June 15th…Up until this point I had heard nothing from him, other than, “we’re still working on details” and that he would “figure it out soon.” He finally calls me and says that this project isn’t going to work…he claims that his engineers designed the pergola with “fantasy wood that doesn’t exist” (those are literally his words, not mine) and that the cost to build this “mythical structure” (again, his words) would be at least DOUBLE ($60k) what he originally quoted, and that he would need to come out again and take MORE measurements. This pergola is certainly no over-the-top project…Lawn Master SPECIALIZES in custom pergolas, and this ignoramus is telling me that my “mythical” project would not be feasible. Let’s back up for a minute here…this is his JOB, right? He must spend all day, every day quoting projects just like this. So how could he be so incapable of doing that job? If he actually thought that the scope of this project was too grand (which it certainly isn’t), then why didn’t he say something sooner? We have been talking about this project for 1.5 months, and he only starts to voice these concerns NOW? Not to mention, he has the audacity to blame his engineers. Maybe if he actually took his job seriously, and decided to be a contributing member of society instead of behaving like a degenerate, then he wouldn’t have wasted so much time. Clearly the job security at Lawn Master is phenomenal! Needless to say, the project came to a crashing halt at this point, and now I have to find another company and start from scratch. I advised him that his lack of talent in this profession should be the catalyst that he needs to pursue a career that better suits his talents (which I can only assume are quite minimal at best, but are most likely non-existent). To the owners of Lawn Master: I would strongly urge you to get rid of this bonehead. He’s rude, arrogant, lacks all sense of professionalism, and is completely worthless. The fact that he constantly referred to this project as “mythical” and a “fantasy” makes me think that perhaps he spends too much time daydreaming of his role as Dungeon Master, whilst playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons in his mother’s basement. Thanks for wasting my time, Jeff!

Patio Warehouse Inc
This was a wonderful experience. Our patio was crying out for a pergola. Paul came to our house, spent a lot of time showing me options, and wrote up a quote right there. Then a few days later Mario came out to take engineering measurements and start the permit process. Mario and his helper were so fast. They built the steps, finished with stucco, and prepped the space for the pergola. The only snafu was waiting for the city inspectors, who have their own schedule. There was a delay, and some confusion, but the office was very responsive to my concerns. In the end Mario did a beautiful job of my pergola and the mosaic tiles on my two steps. We are so pleased with our pergola that we are having some more decorative awnings installed on our garage.

I needed to have our Back-Yard pergola completely rebuilt and had 3 bids, am I glad I choose Colin Williams for this job. He and his staff did the most magnificent job and we are so pleased with the end results. He is a true craftsman. I give him 5 stars with a 10+ rating. We have no hesitancy in completely recommending him.

Approved Contractor Inc.
I contacted Approved Contractors about re-stucco'ing my house based on a great rating on Angie's List.  Jared came out and gave me a bid, and made some other suggestions about what they could help me repair, some of which I took and some I didn't.  I decided to re-stucco the house and have them spruce up a sad looking pergola, including replacing some wood and painting it. I could restate what many others have said in their reviews, which is that the crew was super professional and nice.  However, more importantly, I'm beyond impressed with their ethics and standards.  Due to some miscommunication between Jared and his crew, the style of stucco I ended up with was explicitly not what I wanted.  Instead of arguing with me or finding a way to blame me for this mistake, Jared took responsibility immediately (within 10 minutes of an email to him he called my cell phone) and not only offered but insisted that they would redo the entire stucco project at their cost or give me a partial refund.  I went with the re-stucco and they spent 4 more days at my house (not a cheap fix for them).   I have a 900 sq foot house and the cost for the re-stucco was about $6,000 (with an Angie's List deal).  This included all the outside trim, fascia, eaves, etc.  Work took only 4 days (each time, lol), including the pergola repair.  Special shout out to Rafael, my crew leader, super funny and nice guy.  Customer satisfaction has been their #1 priority in every given situation, and that is rare.  My dad was a contractor who used to go around fixing other contractor's mistakes, so I especially appreciate how unique a company like this is.

Michael is an incredibly talented woodworker. He has done all of the exterior woodwork on my house including my deck, pergola, fencing, gates and porch. It all is masterfully crafted and beautiful. He works tirelessly to get the the job done right and is extremely fair with his pricing. I would absolutely work with him again!

LSP Construction
Karina responded quickly, which was important because we didn’t know if the structure was going to fall. I sent a video and pictures, and they assessed it and arranged to come out the next morning to take down the structure, and remove the debris. There was mature wisteria woven into the pergola, and they were conscientious about not damaging the plant any more than necessary. Carlos and his crew were on time, friendly, responsive, and did great work. Highly recommended.

Recent Review: The job well perfectly, as planned; on time and beautifully executed.  The 2 builders/installers were most professional, efficient, helpful and accommodating.  We can finally fully enjoy our sunniest outdoor spaces, even during the hot, sunny days of summer. And the look is magnificent!!  We receive nothing but repeated compliments from everyone that sees them. The walnut grain wood finish looks like real walnut. And the steel structure beneath the main vinyl posts and joists is amazingly sturdy and strong. Dave Umholtz (salesman) did a wonderful job in guiding us through the main initial selection and design process, and the rest of the crew did as fine a job in fleshing out the details and executing the installation.
