Reviews in Ashford for Deck Builders

Mr. Straughn was recommended to me by a friend who had hired him to build a storage building. My friend did not initially say that he had ever had any problems with him. Mr. Straughn and his crew began tearing down the old decking in mid-May and worked fairly consistently for the first week or so. Then they began not showing up for a day or two or three, then would work for a half a day or a day and not return for a few days. At one point they didn't show up for a week. During all this time I could not use our back door because there was no deck and no steps. After I phoned and complained he came by and explained that he had taken another job with a deadline, etc, and would be back to finish our deck in a couple days. About a week later they finally returned. On at last three occasions he said "we'll be finished with your deck and completely out of here by Friday." He didn't indicate which Friday. The last time I spoke with him he said he was nearly bankrupt and asked that I go to the hardware store and pay for the material he needed to finish our deck. At this point I still owed him $1500. In the course of our conversation I learned that the only way our deck would be finished was if I did as he asked because he had no money to pay for the material. So I went to the hardware store where he had a list of material already in the computer which I paid for. He and his crew returned to work for a day or so then left never to return. They left the deck about 90 percent finished. Calls to his cell phone were met with a recording that he could not accept calls. They left a large trailer full of trash in our side yard which killed the grass. My husband hauled it away. They left lumber scraps, their fast-food trash and other debris all over the backyard which we had to clean up. It cost over $1000 to have another carpenter come and finish the deck. Mr. Straughn initially appears to be an honest, charming, good-old-boy family man. The quality of his work is about average but his trustworthiness is sorely lacking.

After trying to get a schedule between rain and our vacations Charles pressure washed the house and the back deck. He did a good job and will use him in the future for odd jobs around our house

Custom Decks of Huntsville
I could not be happier with the work performed by Barry of Custom Decks of Huntsville! I planned and dreamed for years about having a safe outdoor space for my cats, and Barry built them the perfect "catio"! His work was great, and has the nicest personality and was so easy to work with. He stays busy, so you may have to wait a while before your project starts. But he's worth the wait!

I was impressed with Chris, the owner, from the very first call. He returned my call promptly, and at every stage he did what he said he would, WHEN he said he would. Despite having to leave early one afternoon due to heat, his crew finished earlier than he promised. They left the sight cleaner than they found it, even removing some shrubbery trimmings when they removed the old shingles and debris. The crew was very polite, as as unobtrusive as possible for a job that requires walking on the roof and hammering.

Darryl's Remodeling Sheetrock & More
Darryl quoted the job and commenced work June 2009. Job was to be completed July 15, 2009. He installed the deck boards and we noticed the boards full of knots and holes. We insisted he replace about 17 boards. He finished the job late August. The "Yellawood" timber needed to be left for six months before any stains were applied (apparently). In January 2010 we noticed during the stain application how twisted and peeled the wood became. He was answering his phone at this time... so when we contacted him he said he would check it out. He contacted Lowes who said they would replace the wood. He declined because he wanted to be paid for labor again. At this point, he doesn't answer his phone. I've contacted Yellawood to see what they want to do. Avoid this guy.

Klein and Son Construction and Excavating
Our house had fallen into disrepair inside and outside due to neglect by family members living there. We selected Klein and Son to look at the situation and tell us what needed to be done since we live in another part of the country. We knew the deck was in bad shape, the back door needed to be replaced and some exterior siding was rotten from rain splash beside it but not sure what else needed to be done. They came back with the estimate to fix those things and paint the exterior so we told them to proceed. After they completed the work, my brother was saying that the new steps on the deck sag/bend when you step on them but Fred Klein said he would come put another stringer/riser on it so that would fix that and all would be good. We made a trip to visit the house in January and are still in shock from what we found. The stringer was never installed on the steps even after I reminded Fred. Also the deck was not built to code. Fred said we told him to build it like it was which to us meant shape and size but to him apparently means to code 29 years ago which is what they did but he did offer to bring it up to code if we paid him. I did also discover while installing the stringer and balisters that they did not replace most of the framing under the deck. There are numerous rotten spots in the siding around the house that were just painted over, not counting the spot caused by the dog. My neighbor was pointing them out from his yard. There are some pieces of siding that have pulled away from the house that only need a nail or two to pull them back down but they are still sticking out. I didn't ask them to fix it but it is so small most contractors would just do it. The threshold for the back door is missing the wood under it so when you step outside the metal bends down. I told Fred about it and he said he would look at it. I am thinking that is all he did. I fixed it while we were there. I also noticed runs on the side of the house. I have since learned that they stained over the paint which makes no sense to me as it is a waste of their time and my money but Fred says we insisted on them doing it. We did provide them a gallon of stain to do the chimney that was rebuilt when the roof was replaced but the wood was too wet so seal. Somehow that became stain the whole house which does not work so that was an obvious misunderstanding. All my efforts to work with Fred are fruitless. He takes no ownership of his work or any responsibility. Everything is our fault but I didn't know we could relieve them of their responsibility to work to code. Any contractor I have ever worked with would have never stained the painted siding but worked with us to clear up the issue and most would have taken care of the little things to prep the house before painting. Fred has said some of the things he did were to save us money but I suspect the reality is it saved him expense so he made more money. After looking at everything, I don't feel like us getting what we needed or paid for was the priority but instead calling the job finished and getting paid was. Perhaps things might have worked out differently if we had been there to oversee everything but that is the whole point of hiring the right contractor. I offer anyone to come take a look to see for themselves if you want to see what I am talking about.

disaster - i am so embarrassed to have this work on display at my house. can't wait to get it redone by a true professional. Wood is not set in straight, gaps where they should not be -- stuff just pushed into the gaps that looks like my grandson did it. Screws halfway in place and just left there. First good wind and the deck will be gone, I am sure. I do not understand how this person got 5 stars. I trusted this site to find a professional and I found an imposter.

Emerald Renovations
He agreed a deck was something he could do, came over, made some measurements and was going to call me back within a week with estimates and dates, though he did tell me he had another job going so would not be able to start for a couple of weeks, or would start and have to come back later to finish, which was fine. He never called me back with the estimates. I gave it a couple weeks, then called him and left a message requesting a call with the estimates or at least to let me know if I needed to find someone else, and he never replied. I ended up having to find someone else to do the job and ended up having it done a couple of months later than I wanted since I was waiting to hear back from Emerald. It has been over 6 months and he has never bothered to call me back.

Charlie's Home Services
Rick handled everything in a efficient and professional way. He looked at the job and quickly supplied me with estimatesome on several different things I requested free of charge. He did part of the work, at my request, and then returned two or three weeks later to do other items on my estimate. He worked around my new tenants schedule which was quite inflexible, I must mention, definitely making unnecessary trips so they could be present. I was very happy with the entire experience.
