Reviews for Installing Decomposed Granite in Tucson

MCCONNELL NERSERY & LANDSCAPING INC
5.0
We provided McConnell with a previous professional landscape plan done by another contractor, and he was able to further adapt the design to our needs using feedback from neighbors. He also made the design fit our budget. He was extremely knowledgeable in recommended plants and trees to meet our needs. Planning completed, we entered the installation phase and he started and finished on time. His crew was professional and experienced. His team leader was able to address concerns as they arose. They removed the lawn according to plan. The lawn tried to re-emerge later, and he came back twice after project completion to treat and stop it. They installed all new drip irrigation lines and new valves. They recommended separate irrigation zones for trees and plants, which turned out to be a really good idea. Plant and tree installation went well and he stood behind his warranty and replaced any dying plants during the first year. Gravel installation had a minor problem when the gravel pit could not provide half-inch gravel, so we were not able to cover the ground with what we ordered. Also, the original drawing we provided him was in error and not to scale, resulting in not enough gravel ordered. McConnell took care of the shortage and personnally paid for additional gravel. Also, when gravel was delivered and dumped next to the project area I was concerned with safety. He promptly responded and set up cones for visibility. When the project was complete, his crew remained on the premises until we were satisfied with their cleanup. After project completion he made visits to check on irrigation and plant survival. He continues to respond to our needs concerning this project well after completion. We highly recommend McConnell Landscaping to neighborhood association or for private homeowners' jobs.

David has exceptional people skills and within minutes of our first meeting he nailed our front yard plans incorporating what we wanted with some really great suggestions that really pushed it over the top. He knows his stuff and his design reflected his knowledge of the terrain we were working with and what the plants would need as they matured. We were striving for a low maintenance yard that would not require a lot of watering, in a style reflective of our natural surroundings. We have a challenging front yard on a slope that required care to build a retention wall to keep our soil from running downhill while allowing for proper drainage and the creation of suitable planting areas that took advantage of the design. David was quickly able to creatively devise a front yard that optimized its unique qualities in such a way that will allow our plants to thrive for years to come. He’s able to group plants in a style which truly enhances their appearance while meeting their irrigation needs with minimal additional watering. A real advantage in Tucson. David was always responsive to any questions or concerns we had during the project. His foreman, Gilbert, was very professional and I can’t say enough about the rest of the team. Professional, meticulous, on time, courteous and always willing to work with us in an effort to inconvenience us as little as possible throughout the process. It was a real pleasure for us. The results were far beyond our expectations. In fact, David and his landscaping staff were so exceptional that we did not hesitate to request that they come back and do our backyard in the near future. We’re looking forward to it!

I interviewed two bidders for the project; I chose EcoSense Landscaping not only because they were recommended by Zona Gardens (the designer), but because Eli Nielsen, the owner, was the more responsive communicator--even though his was not the lower bid. Eli subcontracted some of the work, billed separately: the steel pathway edging (Drake Built Projects LLC, $960), and the removal and stump grinding of two Rhus lancea trees (Catalina Tree Service, $600). Eli took us shopping for boulders, and sent us to a second place to shop on our own for the flagstones and decomposed granite for the pathways, and the crushed rock for one of yards that was being converted from a grass lawn--all of which were subsequently delivered on schedule. Eli himself found, purchased, and had delivered all the plants that the landscaping plans called for. Eli and his crew of usually five helpers arrived on schedule at 6 a.m. for four straight days: removing vegetation, digging trenches, installing irrigation and electric lines, and planting plants--often using a jackhammer to dig the planting holes, a totally new experience for me. The crew worked efficiently until about 2 p.m. every day--what a major job, and they were constantly busy. Eli scheduled the final two days of work at the end of the following week, so that the construction activities would not interfere with house guests we were entertaining. Final installation of lighting in the mesquite tree will be done now that the tree has finally been pruned, and one plant that didn't make it will be replaced (all plants come with a 90-day survival guarantee). We are delighted with the finished project! The "Timeless Beauty" Desert Willow and "Gold Star" Yellow Bells are already blooming, along with many of the other smaller plants and succulents. The formerly dead lawn has been replaced with Santa Fe Rose crushed rock with a steel-edged flagstone path meandering through it, the accent lighting is gorgeous, the irrigation system is working fine, and the vegetable garden already has peppers ready to harvest and radishes flourishing. We believe that we have made a great investment in our home, and heartily recommend Eli Nielsen and EcoSense Landscaping for their high degree of professionalism, expertise, and efficiency.

During the initial discussions about what I wanted done, there was some confusion because I ended up talking to more than one person. However, everything was resolved. The work went well and was done in about ten days.

Jose simply transformed the appearance of the house. He went so far beyond my expectations I can't even describe. For the price he gave me I expected him to spread the decomposed granite. And I expected a charge for some flowers that would last hopefully until I finished the repairs inside and got the house rented. When I returned to the house I saw a completely landscaped front yard. The flower bed was absolutely packed with flowers. He added a simple timer and drip system in the bed (we never discussed it and I didn't request it as I told him I didn't expect that the renter would water the plants and that they would probably die, but that was okay with me). He added several desert plants to the front yard and took a bunch of rocks that the long term renter had accumulated and left in the back yard to create a gorgeous effect. He charged me $120 more than the quote for spreading the granite. I believe that he spent close to $120 for the plants and timer that he installed so I think his profit on the added work I requested was near zero. I only wish that my house looked as nice. I live in Phoenix otherwise I'd have him start on it asap! I did not read the few reviews that are less than "straight A's" for Angels and it is hard to imagine how things went wrong or even less than excellent with him. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Definitely exceeded by far my expectations at a very reasonable price.

I was so happy with Jason's landscape design, workmanship and crew that I also had Jason design and complete the front yard. Jason was very easy to communicate and work with and was on site most days. We are so happy with our property and are enjoying spending time outdoors. I would not hesitate to recommend Jason for any project. You won't be disappointed!!!

We were treated with the utmost courtesy, were kept informed every step of the way, and the project was completed as described in the contract, though there were several delays. Attention was paid to small details, the work site was always left clean, and the final product is absolutely beautiful. We had a final walk-through in which the new lighting and irrigation systems were explained in detail, and a follow up meeting was promised in a few months to insure that the plants were healthy and all the components of the project were working correctly. We were also encouraged to call with any questions that might arise. TLD is a professional, capable, dependable company, whose pride in workmanship is evident. The drawbacks in our expereince involved timelines and follow up. There were delays in reponses to calls and emails. The original review was edited to reflect these issues.

I've moved on from the issues, or I thought I had, until these past weeks I've been trying to catch up on the work required to deal with the issues of Horticulture Unlimited's work. Decomposed granite does not match at all the original granite even though the name of the color was provided. This was spread liberally so, there's really no recovery. It's not even the right size. NO repair for the manifold was done.. at all but I was fully charged for it. The manifold items needing repair were clearly stated, nothing was done. In fact, the leak was there with water to indicate the leak. The person to do the repair was on site but the nature of his work there was no evidence, none. Weeds had all the appearance of being cut down with a string trimmer. Weeds were back in force within a week, same density, same locations. Expensive. I also had Horticulture Unlimited landscape our back yard. The job was completed and it all looks very good. However, almost each and every day the brick/masonary work was being done, I had to negotiate with the gentleman on site for one thing or the other. The brick used was not as specified in the plans, he showed up with brick already purchased. When laying the flagstone steps etc., I had to haggle for 20min for him to install the way the plans specified. He trimmed the tree back to facilitate work on a tree that was thinly trimmed to begin with. It should have never been touched. Some plants used/placed were not as specified in the plan but honestly, not a big deal in the grand scheme of things for me, but maybe for you. Four areas where drip irrigation was laid never received sufficient flow to keep plants healthy. That should have been a snap given a new installation of plants and irrigation. The managers and office are very professional. Estimates provided are very straight forward and complete. They will never be used again. Never. Charles
