I obtained 4 bids on this project. 3 were taken from Angies List; and one was a referral from a friend. The referral was a start-up company, and while they came in with the lowest bid, they had minimal references to check out and were not listed with the BBB. I did not consider their lowest bid. The other 3 companies came in with bids that differed only by a couple of hundred dollars. Interestingly, since I have a and quot;Uand quot; shape driveway with add'l parking space parallel to the street, all 3 companies came in with different sq. feet measurements. Apparently, that is not a pure science. I choose Southern Pavers for two reasons: 1) the owner came out within two days of my call (vs. a sales rep), measured the driveway himself, and submitted a bid (via email) within 3 days, and 2) Southern Pavers uses crushed asphalt as its base rather than leveling sand...it is firmer and there is less likelihood of weeds growing between the pavers. I might add that it was very helpful to visit their offices/showroom to see paver patterns. The owner's partner/wife steered me in the right direction of paver selection, consistent with I told her what I was looking for, and viewing the pics I took of the house. The entire project was completed in 4 days...it would have been completed in 3 days, but I needed (long overdue) maintenance service on an artesean well that was in the middle of the driveway. I thought the best time to do that was after the excavation, and before the base was laid, so the well/pump service people could more easily access the well and pvc line. Note: that it is almost impossible for an existing driveway to be excavated without damaging sprinkler system pvc pipe. None of the paver companies will assume responsibility for repairs and/or replacement. You should factor that cost into your project if you have irrigation lines running under your driveway. All in all, Southern Pavers did an excellent job. The driveway is solid and looks great.
