Review for San Antonio Master Bathroom Remodeling

Artigiano Carpentry & Tile
Mario did an incredible job of completely demoing and recreating our master bathroom. He demo’d our floor, shower, and tub. He put down new tile on our floor and built our new shower from scratch (extending it and completely changing it’s floorplan). He worked with various vendors to paint our cabinets and to give us new countertops, mirrors, and lighting. The finish of the bathroom really is top notch. We were and continue to be very pleased with Mario’s professionalism and timely follow up. He also organized the effort to complete our back patio. They demo’d our existing pergola and re-built a structurally sound back patio (it looks like an extension of our house). We, again, are very pleased with the end result. Mario still works with us today on our various home renovations. He is incredibly reliable and someone we will continue to work with.

After consulting with an interior decorator, we contacted Lone Star State Construction for an estimate to remodel our master bathroom. Don Peters, one of the owners, was prompt in getting back to us and coming over for an estimate. The estimate we received was well thought out and for the most part detailed. After interviewing two other companies, we decided on Lone Star. This was our second remodel, but our first major one. Everything was changing in the bathroom except we kept the jacuzzi tub. We received guidance on choosing colors, etc. from the decorator and basic measurements from Don. It was up to us to locate all the materials we would need for the project and order the amounts, with some recommended sources offered by Lone Star. We ordered and replaced main, decorative and floor tile for the shower walls and tub enclosure, tile (replacing carpeting) for the flooring, new cabinetry and hardware, countertop and sinks, new faucets for the sinks, tub and shower, lighting, two mirrors to replace one large mirror over the cabinets, an overhead fan and two new vent fans. Here is where I'll say that in retrospect we would recommend using a designer who can give precise measurements as to how much of each product, especially the tile, you will need, providing an exact design prior to beginning your project. Our decorator gave us a VERY rough drawing of her concept, but nothing that was exact. My husband took many measurements himself and when it was time to install we still had to order more tile, incurring additional shipping fees. Lone Star's job is to do the work of construction. It's important you know WHAT you want before you begin. This takes a lot of time and planning. Lone Star State Construction works in tandem with a design service which might be a good place to start for major remodeling. Before the work began we needed to have all of our materials in place. On the first day we met with Don, the subs who would be in charge of various aspect of the work, and most importantly our project manager, Anna Badger. Anna is a jewel and was my lifeline to calm during the remodeling process. We were given an approximate time frame of 30 days to complete the project. The demolition of the old bathroom was completed quickly. Anna was in charge of lining up the subs to do the work when needed. She was my "go to" person throughout the project and communicated with the subs and workers if a concern came up. The sub for the tile worked with me as to the exact design of the decorative tile and shower niche. He didn't rush and we worked out a pleasing design. However, when the deco tile was installed it was off-center. When I noticed that, I realize that was the time to say "stop," and call Anna. When she saw it the next day she came up with a solution for the problem. Tile had to be removed and new tile replaced, but the tile folks covered the cost. We needed to order more decorative tile twice, which had to be shipped and cost additional shipping fees. In the end, the tile is absolutely lovely and we're very happy with the quality of installation. Anna kept in contact with me by phone, text and stopping by once or twice a day to see the progress. She lined up each sub as needed: electricians, plumbers, tilers, painters. I knew who was coming when. We were home most of the time, but there was a lock box to give access to workers in the case we were gone. I was most impressed by the sub, Mike, who oversaw the tiling, painting, installation of the custom cabinet and the mirrors. He, too, reassured me that little glitches are par for the course, worked his best to bring as close to perfection as we could get in quality, and to let me know that our satisfaction was a priority. Anna, too, did everything she could to be sure the work was done well. If a concern came up, she addressed it promptly. After the completion of the work there were two or three items that needed correcting. She saw to it that they were taken care of right away. The vent vans did not work properly as the electricians didn't connect the exhaust hoses to the vent vans. They were responsive to correct this when requested by Anna, but still left some old hardware connected in the attic. The project was completed on the original projected date. Installation of the shower enclosure was a separate transaction, so we had to wait for that before moving in to our lovely new bathroom. Don told us at the beginning that would be the case, but did slightly miscommunicate as to who was to contact the company providing the enclosure. This was easily worked out with Anna. We're very happy with our updated bathroom. The price quoted here was for Lone Star State Construction only. The materials (tile, cabinets, mirrors, etc) were our cost apart from the work, including the shower enclosure. While remodeling is a fun, yet messy, undertaking, I would say that Lone Star Construction, under Anna Badger's guidance, made it a positive experience.

Ibarras General Remodeling, Inc
Mr. Ibarra was rarely onsite. The workers did not speak English and it was very difficult to communicate with them. We had to instruct and re-instruct Mr. Ibarra on what we wanted. We had to supervise the work constantly and stop the workers when they were doing something contrary to the plans. The tile work was excellent but the rest of the work like the drywall and texture was awful and we had to have someone else come in to re-do it.

Sears Appliance Repair
Workmanship was good; however, in retrospect it was too expensive. For the sake of expediency I went with Sears because I thought I'd be dealing with one individual for all the work. Instead they hire subcontractors so I had to deal with various contractors to schedule all aspect of the job. To my surprise since the bathroom included--tub/shower enclosure, replacement of double vanity, installation of framed vanity mirror and installation of new floor tile--I though they'd paint but that is not in the scope of their work. In the kitchen they installed a new built-in microwave/convection oven and vent, removed two cabinets and repositioned them and refaced the remaining cabinets, so of course, painting was required but I had to hire someone on my own to complete all painting.

Dustin called to inquire about a message I left via his webpage. He was very professional and listened to all my wants and wishes for our Master Bath. He scheduled an appointment to see the bathroom and measure to give us an estimate. He was on time, professional and respectful of our home. He even put on booties over his shoes before entering. He measured and talked to us and then provided a very detailed estimate to us the following week. We were also getting estimates from other companies and it came down to Reliant and another Company. We did choose the other company for this project but not because we were unhappy or uncomfortable with Dustin and Reliant Renovation. We informed him that we will be considering him for other future projects in our home.

Shaw Company Painting & Remodeling
Super job by very knowledgeable team. Everything from the selection of fixtures, countertops, and tiles from Brittany at the Shaw Remodeling showroom to the finished product exceeded our expectations. The project manager, Alain, insured that each component of the project was done and done correctly. Both bathrooms, especially the completely remodeled master bath, provide the look and functionality that we desired. The master bath was completely gutted and the original bathtub/separate shower was replaced by an elongated walk-in shower, the original cabinet replaced with a custom made cabinet made by Shaw's woodworking shop, the wall and floor tiles complement each other fully, just as Brittany suggested they would, and the granite counter makes the bathroom look and feel luxurious.

My House
Kurt Reece was very accommodating as we could not do all the work at once. When work was scheduled to be done all contractors showed up on time and Ruben did excellent work on the tile floors.

Recent Review: Dave and his crew have always been polite and professional. My home was built in 1976 and the master bath left much to be desired. The vanity area was attached to the master bedroom and the toilet/shower area was a very tiny room that was closed off by a door. I wanted a one room master bathroom that was completely separate from my bedroom. Dave was able to remove the tub and had his crew raise my shower head to 7', move my tub drain to the center of the shower floor and increase it's size, built a corner shower bench and a cubby hole in my new tiled walk-in shower (a change I asked for after they had started work). The tiled shower with included curb reaches my ceiling. They also removed old tile on my floor and replaced it with new tile. When I noticed that the wrong tile was laid down on the floor, I immediately brought it to Dave's attention. The very next day, the wrong tile was removed and the correct tile was placed down, no questions asked. They removed the door frame where the original shower room door was and created an entrance way. They built a new doorway and frame where the vanity opened into my bedroom and attached a new door. This separated the bathroom from my bedroom and created a sound and light barrier that was a constant issue previously. They also removed the "popcorn" type ceiling in my bathroom and created a more modern smooth look for me. Dave's crew then relocated the old and very outdated light to a more centered area in the vanity room. I did not have them paint, but they did ensure all my walls were paint ready so there was no prep I had to do on my part. I purchased a new toilet after all the work was completed and final payment given. I was supposed to have purchased it prior and they were to install it, but I was unable to. Despite this, Dave and his crew came back to my house and installed the toilet after the fact for me. Not only that, without asking and to my delight and surprise, they also installed the newly purchased door handles and lock for my bathroom which I did not ask them to do, it wasn't in the quote/invoice and Dave graciously did not charge for. I could not be any more pleased. He has once again gone above and beyond.
