*****Initial Call: discussed all the problems of the binding door, new threshold needed etc. He said he would remove the door, trim the bottom, install the threshold and adjust the hinge. He discussed $65 for the adjustments to the door plus parts which totaled approx. $120 per door for 4 total doors. *****Scoping visit: He showed up to do a walk through and measurements and his written estimate jumped $65 per door to charge for removing the door with no discussion. I asked why the extra charge and he said the service for each (the door and the threshold are $65 each). He never distinguished any price difference on the phone after a very detailed conversation about the problems. We decided to have him only work on the front door. *****The work: 10/2: When he showed up to do the work. He immediately needed to borrow an extension cord, and said he forgot to pack his stain to apply to the bottom of the door after the cut. I provided both for him to complete the job. It's my intent to work together and help this all be a success. After it started raining, I offered to let him work in my garage and helped him move the door in there and set it all up. I even provided towels to dry off the door. After the threshold was installed, he then informed me there was a gap between it and the flooring. I told Him I had trim and he said he would install it. No discussion of extra charges etc. Then he informed me he forgot to pack his other saw and wouldn’t be able to make the cut and would have to return. Again, no discussion of extra charges or problems. I asked him in the end to make it right. I have an incomplete project with a ¾” gap between the threshold and the flooring. He assured me I had a new threshold. He justified his stance by saying he can’t predict all outcomes and would have to charge me again if he had to return to place the trim because it’s not part of the project. I assured him I’m not a door expert and don’t know all the questions to ask but if it were a risk, he should have told me of that potential problem. I reminded him that he never brought up any extra charges till now. He then told me he should have charged me more for the work he did as a means to justify not putting in the trim. *****Additionally: I asked him to be careful with the doors and not to scratch them on the saw horses. He assured me they were covered with cardboard. The front of the door has two gouges from where they rested on the sawhorse. I had to ask him to fully seat the pins on the hinges because the one hinge he made adjustments to by pounding on it with a hammer, didn’t line up properly. ***** Summary: I rated quality a B since the threshold itself is installed well and the store swing and closes freely as I asked. What I wanted and asked for was for him to make it right and put the trim in as he said he would while working on the project. He told me he could do it when I call him back to do the remaining doors if his extra charge was an issue. Never would I have agreed to taking out the old threshold and installing a new one with a big gap. He should have made it right. I won’t call him back and I won’t recommend him to others. Lack of attention to details, inability to communicate well or manage expectations.
