Saw a fireplace tuneup special on Angies list for the JR Putman company. I purchased the special for a friend who's fireplace was not working. During the service visit the fireplace problem was diagnosed and fixed. The cost to fix the fireplace was $479.95. The $59 fireplace tuneup was also done. As part of the special J.R. Putnam also checks the furnace. My friend was told that if she signed up for a furnace maintenance contract from JR Putman she would not have to pay roughly another $150 dollars for the fireplace fix. JR Putman found several problems with the furnace, improperly installed furnace, cracked burners, ignitor outside ohm range, duct work not adequate, and the furnace unsafe to use. To fix these problems would require thousands of dollars of repair. They also had her sign something that removed them from any liability for an unsafe furnace. Now the house had a home warranty. The next day someone came over to look at the furnace problems. He used a camera on an extension to look at the burners. He took pictures. There were no cracked burners, the ignitor did not need to be replaced and the duct work was fine. The furnace was installed properly. There was nothing to repair. He measured the CO and found no unsafe condition. If you add in the lost work time, the $75 for the second opinion on the furnace, the initial stress over the safety and the cost of replacing the furnace, and now making monthly payments for JR Putnam's furnace maintenance contract this fireplace special was a huge disappointment.
