Purcell Construction

I normally check the boxes when submitting reviews to Angie’s List but I could not do so for Purcell Construction. We contracted Purcell Construction to build a deck and after delays—not his fault but the homeowners association—the project started one day after HOA approval. The project took approximately one week to complete—could have been sooner but had to wait a sign-off from the county inspectors. We could not be happier with the end result. The deck is well crafted and probably will not move during an earthquake. Hunter team (Donald and Tracy) did an outstanding job in the cold sometime working after sunset to complete the project. If you are looking for a well-built deck at a reasonable price, I highly recommend Purcell Constructio

The Deck Tech

Quality was great, deck builder was a great carpenter. Time to complete was not good at all...takes way too long. Builder was a carpenter by trade and a sub contractor. Very skilled, but no sense of urgency from DeckTech to complete the job. If you want quality and custom work, they will do it and you will pay for it, but it takes way too long

Mr. Coulter arrived promptly, as promised, and proceeded to repair the deck where we had heavy wear and damage. He started to wash the deck by hand, but switched to a power washer. (We have a rather large deck and it was stinking HOT that week!) After thoroughly cleaning the deck, taking care to make sure that most every speck of dirt and mold was removed, he gave it a couple of days to dry. He then came back and stained the deck. I don't know a harder worker than Herb Coulter. He is also very good at communication and making sure that I was completely satisfied with his work before he took the final payment. I would recommend him and his company highly. In fact, my daughter had some major problems for Herb and his team to solve at her home. She was more than satisfied with the results and recommended The Remodeling Company to me

Classic Construction Exteriors

We had our old deck torn down and replaced with a new PVC deck. We also replaced the front porch flooring with new pressure treated decking boards. We are extremely pleased with the end result of both. We got estimates from 4 companies and went with Classic Construction because we felt very comfortable and confident with them from the first meeting. The quote by Justin, the project manager, was very detailed. He met with us on multiple occasions and drew up several plans for us to choose from. He was always patient as we struggled with picking the design and colors and his recommendations were extremely helpful. He did a good job of laying out the design and explaining things so that there were no surprises during the building phase. He’s easy to work with and was very responsive to all questions and concerns. Once the job started, Chris and Mike arrived on time every day and worked extremely hard in 100 degree weather. They continued until the job was done and there was no bouncing back and forth between our job and someone else’s. They are very skilled and take great pride in their work. The quality of their work was excellent and we’ve gotten many compliments on the finished product. We couldn’t be more pleased with our new deck and front porch. We highly recommend this company and wouldn’t hesitate to use them again for future projects

We had some issues with Deck Tech Inc but the overall work was good. They built a beautiful deck, the workmanship is fine. We were trying a new type of wood on the floor and they weren't experienced with it so there was a problem with getting that fixed. Deck Tech did come back to finish it and rectify the issues. They did what we wanted them to do, made suggestions that were helpful, and cleaned up after themselves

The quality of the work is excellent. They cleaned up well, and left no trace of their presence. It took awhile to get on their schedule, but once there I was very pleased with the experience. I would use them again.

All-N-1 Services Inc

This was a large deck renovation, which was like a second story deck renovation due to the grade of our property and the number of stairs involved. We selected Trex Rocky Harbor composite deck boards and Trex charcoal railings. The All-N-1 Team performed premium work, and the deck is beautiful. Every time we go out on the deck, we keep commenting to ourselves, "We love this deck" and "We are so glad we did this." Previously, the deck just stressed us out because we were so worried about some of the old wood deck boards. It is so nice to feel like we can really enjoy the deck now. Working with the All-N-1 Team punctuated this experience with an exclamation point. They worked their tails off, were professional and friendly, used craftsmanship, and the finished product is wonderful. They were efficient, but they did not rush the work, and the result is demonstrative of their methodical/thoughtful approach. We'll call them first for any future needs. Thank you All-N-1 Team!

Dream Builders of VA

If you have no expectations whatsoever of this provider, you will not be disappointed. I, however, had substantial expectations of this provider based on other AL reviews of them, but I can say with full certainty I am left VERY shocked and disappointed, and I will never again do business with them, or recommend to others. I would have to call them "dream killers", not dream builders. I first contacted Nick Covert in August 2014 about my project, and signed a contract with him on 08/31/2014 to tear down an existing wood deck on the rear of my home, and build a Trex composite deck. Nick was punctual and personable when we met at my home, and I specifically told him in August 2014 that I wanted to start near the end of March/early April 2015, once winter had ended and the weather more favorable. The contract was written to show "March 2015" as the project begin date, and on Friday, 02/27/2015 I received a call from Mr. Covert, who stated in his message that "We have a signed contract for March 2015, and my crew would like to begin on Monday (03/02/2015)." Thinking back to my conversation with him in August 2014, I returned his call on 02/27 and indicated my preference to wait until the end of March. Once we connected, Nick said this would not work for his crew due to other projects later in the month, and he left me feeling bullied and without much choice. This initial contact left quite a bad taste in my mouth, particularly since he was all "ahem, ahem, we have a signed contract", and this proved to be his mindset until final completion. This in no way conveys a "customer first" sentiment or a willingness to be flexible, and it demonstrates to me Nick Covert is all about Nick Covert, period. On Monday, 03/02 his crew was a no-show, which I later learned was due to school closures for weather-related reasons. I was told by Nick that some of his workers had to stay home with their children, but on this date his colleague Rob did make time to come to my home and stick a "Dream Builders of VA" sign in my front yard, without my knowledge or consent ahead of time. Clearly they felt quite comfortable advertising on my property before any work had been done, a HUGE mistake when you haven't done the courtesy of getting permission from me, the HOMEOWNER, beforehand; and also when my HOA does not allow signs other than those advertising the home for sale. Without haste, I removed this sign from my property. On Tuesday, 03/03/15 my wood deck was torn down, after which I had no access to either a functional deck or my back yard until project completion (main level of home above ground level). The contract I signed with Dream Builders indicated a project duration of 5 business days (total cockamamie), when the real project took 1 4 business days over the course of FOUR WEEKS (19 business days when inclement weather days added to actual days worked). This represents a nearly 200% increase in the actual project completion time, and the real time I was deprived of a functional deck, and deprived of the use of my back yard. Additionally, while construction was ongoing, I had to reschedule with a lawn care company I utilize because my back yard was such a wreck while Nick's employees were on site. I am also now in the process of hiring a contractor to repair damage caused to my back yard by Nick's employees. Another kink in this project occurred when the original crew assigned was pulled off the project at the end of Week 1, after only 2 actual days of work (inclement weather at weeks end prevented work on Thursday-Friday, 03/05-03/06). Keep in mind this was estimated as a 5 business day project (total cockamamie), and two separate crews had to see it to completion. I was told there were attendance issues with the first crew, and I observed firsthand delays with the second crew during the course of the NEXT 3 WEEKS. To a reasonable person this would suggest very poor project management, employee management, and bad faith from the contractor; and Nick's indifference to these performance issues were telling. During Week 2, on Thursday, 03/12/2015 (10 days post-demolition), I arrived home early and had the chance to talk F2F with Rob, as the crew had not left for the day. I asked how much additional time construction would take, and Rob said one more week, until Friday 03/20/2015. On Friday, 03/13/2015 I was home from work, and had the opportunity to observe firsthand the level of effort (LOE) from Nick's crew. On this date, I observed the following..... ________________________ 9:52AM: Two workers arrived at my home to start work for the day 11:45AM: Both workers got into their work truck, and drove out of my neighborhood for lunch 1:00PM: The workers returned to my home from lunch and resumed working 3:20PM: Both workers got into their work truck a second time, and drove out of my neighborhood (NOTE: While talking with the workers in my back yard earlier this day, one worker said he was tired from little sleep the prior evening, and needed an energy drink. I will assume this was the reason for their second one-hour departure) 4:30PM: The workers returned to my home from their absence 5:10PM: The workers left for the day Total LOE: ~300 minutes (5 hours of work) ________________________ On this date, even when the workers first arrived at my home shortly before 10AM, they did not begin working immediately. Their initial time in my back yard was spent drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, and chit chatting. Thus, five hours at my home did not even translate into 5 hours of work. This, all while Rob had been apprised the day prior that I (the customer) would be home, and also after I conversed directly with the workers during the day on Friday. Clearly, they had no qualms about conducting themselves in this fashion, in front of the customer. But wait, there's more! Also during Week 2, delays were encountered when the work completed by Nick's employees failed a footer inspection not by the county, but by an inspector selected by Nick Covert himself. Let me repeat, Nick's employees performed work that did not pass inspection by someone Nick specifically hired. Because of this, a reinspection took place on Friday, 03/13/2015, which I was present to observe. With the footer inspection incomplete before 03/13/2015, no actual work installing the Trex materials had yet been completed on the main deck floor, deck steps, railing, etc; leading to further delays. Near the end of Week 3, on Thursday 03/19/2015, it was obvious that Nick's employees were not going to completely finish my deck by week's end (as Rob told me one week prior), and no work was even performed on Friday, 03/20/2015 due to inclement weather (5th inclement weather day since Tuesday, 03/03/2015). In fact, after seeing the snail's pace of this project up to Friday, 03/13/2015, it was quite evident that Dream Builders of VA just did not care about completing this project in any timely fashion. On Thursday, 03/26/2015 (17 business days after wood deck torn down), the deck was completed, but I am now left with a deck where the final state of completion differs from the 3D drawing contained in the signed contract of August 2014. Specifically, the drawing in the contract shows contiguous deck railing across the deck, from the side, around the front, and down the other side. My completed deck, however, has breaks in the railing, and there are two specific locations (on either side of a curved deck front) where there are clear breaks and gaps in the deck posts, and no railing in between the posts. This is not consistent with the drawing in my contract, so I brought this issue to Nick's attention upon making my final payment. Among other things, he responded that The 3D drawing in the agreement is for illustrative purposes. It is not an actual picture yet a computer drawing that has limitations. WOW, to the tune of over $16K I was sold on a lie, because never once prior to signing a contract, or prior to starting construction, or during construction was this mentioned by Nick or his employees. Moreover, he has not offered to correct this issue, even stating he was quite pleased with the final deck status. Funny, last time I checked, I paid for this project, not you Nick Covert. Now that construction has finished on my deck, I can also state the following RE my experience with Dream Builders of VA: 1. On days where I was not present at my home to monitor construction, I had more than one neighbor tell me they had seen the workers leave around 2:30pm. 2. In over 15 years of my being a homeowner, this is the first time my project has been held hostage because of the contractor's child care issues. I have never worked with another contractor who has not shown up for work because of his or her own childcare issues, and when I am paying you over $16K, I expect you to be present at my home, working on my project, not at home babysitting. 3. As a homeowner, I would be highly suspect of hiring this company to do ANYTHING larger than a deck project. After the way they bungled my deck, they appear to be out of their league. 4. I can only characterize my experience with Dream Builders of VA as hellish. The customer should NOT have to babysit the contractor or their workers; should NOT be so disrespected where workers show up late, mismanage their time, etc; and should NOT be regarded so indifferently that such extreme project delays and clear misrepresentations are dismissed as the cost of doing business. 5. Despite project delays and inconv

Mr. Torres Had done the first part of my front porch in 2011 when he change an old rattan wood decking and crated a beautiful brick porch with a planter; in 2012 he came back for a second stage where the cement steps were change to brick. the whole front yard looks like has been there always, excellent job. The only think I would have change is that originally they use sand to set front porch bricks and I have weeds constantly coming trough the seems. the steps were done with cement in between and I have had no problems so far. He has been very professional, I will definitely call him in the future as I plan to get my back yard improved this Spring

Add A Deck Inc.

I called Add A Deck to come out to the house for a quote. They were professional and showed up as scheduled. I wanted to do a wood deck on the back of the house but due to the yard and slope of the soil a wooden deck ended up not being the best option for the right side of the back of the house. We were able to get a quote for two decks on the left back side of the house. The gentlemen that was the person providing the quote stated that hardscape would be best for the area that we are not able to do a wooden deck. They don't do hardscape but another company does and they would contact me for that portion. The disappointing part of this process was the sales person that came out to the house. He was a nice guy and professional enough however, he was very hard to work with. I was trying to tell him what we wanted and take my time looking and discussing ideas. He kept cutting me off when I would try to talk and he had his own ideas etc... It was very exhausting and by the end of it, I just wanted him to leave. He did provide a nice drawing a few days later. The company for the hardscape called but I did not call them back. The salesman never followed up with me and the drawing did not contain a price for the decking that they would be able to do. Overall I wouldn't say anything completely negative about this company as I can't speak to product or quality as I never got that far. I was just not impressed from the beginning so, I would look elsewhere but you might have a better experience

The Deck Tech

The person that actually built the deck did a wonderful high quality job. He was very good at making suggestions on the look and feel of the deck. We ordered premium wood decking person who was going to build the deck actually sent the wood back twice because it had too many knots. My issues were with the individual that I initially met to discuss the deal and sign the contract. The initial meeting went great. He was punctual and appeared to say all of the right things. Several weeks and months passed by where I was the one following up with the company to get a date on when the deck project would start. I was never given the opportunity to review the permits and was told that day that they arrived on site that the design we discussed had to be changed do to an issue with the soil on our property. Originally we were going to use the existing brick piers and build 1 additional brick pier. The change in design meant that additional piers were needed and but I was never consulted as to how that would be addressed. I came home to find a mix of brick pier and wood piers. This was unacceptable. We went back and forth on the issue until they finally removed to wood piers and replaced them with brick piers but that cost and additional $200 - $400. There were some other minor issues but the issue with the piers was the most troublesome. Had it been communicated to me before the project started that this would be an issue we could have save time and money in devising an option. Payment. The website said that they took credit cards and did not indicate that there was any additional charge for a credit card transaction. When I tried to pay by credit card I was told that I needed to add another $500 to the bill if I was going to pay that way. I paid by check but again felt that they could have done a better job communicating up front. The final product was a very high quality deck but very poor communication from the managers of the company
Work was performed on schedule for exact price quoted. Work crew was careful, professional and pleasant and left the site clean. This large project was well managed and I was kept informed of weather related schedule adjustments. I am confident this project was performed to produce a superior finished product and that it will provide years of trouble-free service backed by Exterior Medics' warranty support that I have seen in action on neighbor's homes. I believe I paid a premium price and received a superior finished product
BNW exceeded our expectations. Once construction began in late February, the job was finished within six weeks! Their craftsmanship is excellent; their responsiveness to questions/changes, etc. was quick, and the completed project is absolutely beautiful. They also replaced our old sliding glass door with a beautiful maintenance-free one. I would definitely use them again
Not only did Wilber come out the same day we initially contacted him to give us an estimate, he was extremely professional, gave us a completely fair price, and his guys did an amazing job. The work spanned several days and they were always punctual. Wilber was easy to communicate our needs and expectations to and we were able to keep constant contact through text messages and phone calls. He always followed up in person after each job was done to ensure high quality. The painting jobs and trim work results were outstanding. They did a fantastic job on our deck and power washing, as well. You can tell he and his team really have pride in what they do for their customers. Due to our time crunch, Wilber bent over backwards for us to get the work done as quickly as possible. He made getting the house on the market effortless, truly. We are sad to have finally found a reliable and high quality contractor right before we leave the area. We wouldn't hesitate to use Wilber again and we will continue to recommend him to everyone we know
I DEFINITELY will use Strong Point Services again and refer them to anyone. I had a wonderful experience. Reggie came out for the quote within one day of reaching out - he listened to what I wanted removed (just the large ones which I couldn’t handle) as well as what I was attempting to do in our yard (remove many more trees, level and grade, etc) given where I had removed a few trees myself. We agreed to more work being done by then because the rates were very reasonable. The crew was here for an entire day and were respectful of the grass and driveway while removing 7 large pines (one leaning significantly over a deck and toward the house) and several smaller trees). They even leveled the mulch so I wouldn’t have a mud pit while waiting on the grading to be done late summer, I also needed hardwood floors and carpet in my home installed quickly. Reggie gave me wonderful advice and did an excellent job of installing my floors. They look beautiful! The installers left the home clean and ready! The prices were excellent
Powerhouse provided a high quality work on building our deck and patio, offered fair price, and had excellent customer service! Mr Edwards and crew were professional, ethical, experienced, and knowledgeable of the deck and patio business. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this contractor to all and will definitely use this company for future business
Very well - called to let me know they were on the way. Power washed siding, brick, and trex deck. Then washed windows and screens inside and out. Very polite and professional, and did a great job.
Initially, following contact, there was a lag in time for someone to go out and scope the job. Once the go ahead was given the work was done in a timely manner. Follow up found that one deck rail was loose. Professional replaced the anchor screw and stabalized the support. They used paint chips to replace the paint, and it looks good. The paint can was left for any additional touch ups. Unfortunately the can was left outside on the deck rail. No one alerted the renter nor the landlord that the can was there
Top Gun is Top Notch. Top Gun met every promise and more. They arrived when they said they would, did the work they said they would do and did it in the time they said they would do it. From all the prep work to the final painting, they did a masterful job and our basement looks fantasic. There were zero letdowns and in fact rather the opposite - they washed the exterior of my house and painted my front door at no additional cost which improved the appearance more than I would ever have expected. It is refreshing to see companies understand the value of delighting their customers
Spectacular, professional work. Edwin showed up as requested and gave us a thoughtful, professional, and helpful estimate. Painters arrived early each day and worked with great diligence and care, carefully completing difficult rooms and intricate woodwork. They were careful with household items and finished the work on time (a touch early actually). They cleaned up carefully and the house now looks fresher, cleaner, and, newer
Excellent! Scott showed up as planned. Work was completed in a professional quality fashion. Prices were fair. The end result turned out as if planned. There were no surprises. After the garage price t, I had Scott expand and rebuild my deck to a 20’x20’ deck with railing using the Home Depot equivalent to Trex. Again, quality work at a reasonable price
James Herbert, the owner, came by and met me and explained the entire process and left his estimate. I was not home when my deck and front porch were cleaned and sealed but both look new. Workers left everything very clean and did a great job!
Rick was recommended to us by a close friend and he has been nothing but professional, kind, helpful, honest, and always reasonably priced! He does exactly what he says he will do and knows how to do just about anything but will tell you if he doesn’t! All around great guy!

After submitting a request to have our deck stained, I heard back from the company very shortly. They provided a very fair quote, scheduled shortly thereafter, and showed up promptly each day to clean the deck then to return and complete the stain. They took a lot of care to ensure nothing else was stained outside of the deck, and even matched the original color, and the end result was exactly what we wanted. Will definitely hire again for any future work
It went fine, just realized that my deck was much larger than them max square footage after the deal was purchased and after getting quote for the entire deck.

What do customers in Richmond say about Deck Repair?
We had Resurrection Builders replace our old wood deck with Trex decking and add a new deck section which was not easy because our deck was very high. They matched the new deck perfectly! William and Juan were professional and experts in their craft. Ryan was wonderful and communicated promptly. They fulfilled all their promises and our deck is beautiful! I would hire them for any other work we have!
