Reviews in Richmond for Installing Central Humidifier

Armstrong Mechanical Services Inc

The two technicians who did the actual work were excellent and deserve commendation. The person or persons responsible for the humidifier cost quote did not properly represent the deal to me. The bill was much greater than the estimate/quote. The office did not initially apply the Angies discount but they did after I asked for it.

I discovered this company because they had a deep-discount Val-Pak coupon to replace a home's entire heating and cooling system (heat pump AND inside air-handling system). However, I learned the package deal is for only the smallest of homes. My home is 2-story and almost 2000 square feet, so the deep-discount system was a bit too small for my needs. Still, I had them come out to estimate installing a whole-house humidifier. (During our extremely cold winter just a few months before, I decided I needed something to help the heat pump make the house less dry and warmer feeling.) River City's owner, Bobby, came out and did a quick estimate to install the humidifier and repair my air handler fan, which was not working properly (wouldn't come on some of the time). Dominion Power was offering a complimentary system checkup to all their customers, so I asked Bobby if River City would do that as well (and bill Dominion). He said they do. After he left, I had James River Heating and A/C come out a few days later to estimate the same project. Their price was a bit higher than River City's so I phoned River City back and scheduled the work (install humidifier + fix fan problem + perform whole system checkup). They couldn't get to it for two weeks. The young technician (Ryan) who showed up was polite, but didn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed when I asked him questions about the humidifier he was installing. For example, the digital readout on the new humidifier was giving bizarre readings that kept changing every minute or so. When I asked about it, Ryan didn't know why it was doing it so he read the small brochure that came with the unit... over and over. He assured me it was "probably fine", but I didn't find that comforting... especially since I won't be able to test the humidifier until the winter -- 7 months from now. On my insistence, Ryan made a note on the repair order that I was concerned the newly installed humidifier may not function properly so if there is a problem this winter, River City will fix it at no charge to me. When I asked Ryan about doing the system checkup, he said no one at his office had mentioned it so he didn't have the equipment to do it on his truck. Adding insult to injury, Ryan told me he repaired my fan problem, but after he left, I learned he had not fixed it and in fact, had made it worse... the fan would not come on at all, so I had no a/c for a few days. I phoned the River City office to report the fan not working and to find out why Ryan wasn't informed about the system checkup. The office personnel I spoke with didn't offer an explanation, or even much of an apology, but did schedule another technician to come out on Saturday. I requested the technician NOT be Ryan again, and "politely" explained why. The woman said the technician coming to my house on Saturday was a "senior" technician, not Ryan. The technician showed up on Saturday afternoon. He was older and a bit gruff... didn't smile or say much... was also a bit disheveled looking... like a car mechanic at the end of the day. His name was Brian. He performed the system checkup, fixed the fan problem, but he too, didn't know why the newly installed humidifier was giving strange/changing digital readings. He said he would look into it and let me know what he found out. To my recollection, I don't think I ever heard back from River City on the topic. In summary, I was underwhelmed with the experience I had with River City. They are a bit cheaper than some of the "big guys", but perhaps you get what you pay for. If you do decide to use their services, I would INSIST on a "senior technician" for the project because it can be a crap shoot with their junior staff.

It is installed and I presume it is working. They didn't charge any over the price of the Big Deal. I thought the pricing was reasonable. The quality is kinda hard to grade because it was installed under my house in my heating system, but as far as I know it's working just fine. It took them 3 or 4 hours, just one person. It was perfect.

I've used FPH heating for a few jobs. They've always been good and very prompt. Can't remember the exact install date off the top of my head (this review is late), it was late in the season, but I should be in good shape for next winter.

Outstanding work performed by a very knowledgeable contractor. Tony and his assistant were at the house on time for over an hour. They checked out our furnace located in the attic like a doctor gives a physical. They reset the electronic thermostat and humidifier. In addition, they used metal tape to reseal areas in the ductwork that were not tapped correctly by our builder's HVAC contractor over 2 years ago. They performed a detailed inspection and check of the heat pump, including cleaning out all the debris inside the housing. They also elevated the heat pump unit 4 inches higher so it would totally clear the mulch and allow the drain holes in the unit to drain adequately. Tony is the best HVAC contractor we have ever had (this is our 17th home).

Recent Review: Phenomenal service. The owner of the company himself came out and did an extremely thorough job, including covering all points and explaining the points that were non-applicable in my case. Educated me on the use of other components (whole home humidifier, for example) than he had to, going above and beyond. He also didn't try to heap on unneeded services so I didn't feel like this call was a bait call at all. Simply performed the task promised, with professionalism and care. I highly recommend this company, and they will get any of my future repair/maintenance business! Thanks!!

Recent Review: The installation went well until a part broke when installing the water lines from the water heater to the humidifier. They came back the next day and fixed the issue. After completion, the county inspector came a found a problem with a valve and this was promptly corrected the next day. All in all, it went well. The installation team was prompt, courteous and professional. The whole process took 2 1/2 days plus 2 days for the county inspection.

Recent Review: Paul may be the most thorough H&C guru east of the Mississippi; the man knows his business and will give you options as a result. I have found Fosters to be the opposite of "I have a hammer, so everything is a nail." Paul made a 25 year old humidifier think it was new, advised us--realistically--on prep for home sale inspection, completely cleaned air cleaners and furnaces, and checked AC. He delicately dealt with old equipment for which new parts are likely not an option, and made everything purr and look far better than ever before. I''m new to Fosters (found on Angie's List), but cannot say enough good things about this. Brings fresh new meaning to "family owned!" GREAT service, great service people. Thanks!
