He was always on-time. When there were some issues, he came back to address my concerns. He was really good responding to any texts or phone calls I made. He was friendly and easy to work with.

Janis Mennona

Janis gave me by far the best bid for the job, around $200. She had creative solutions for how to handle surface preparation. After trial and error, she eventually was able to match paint in a challenging room. This took place over a number of days. She also offered to take care of some odd jobs, which I appreciated at the time. What I did not understand was that, despite her initial bid, she was billing me by the hour. I was shocked to be given a final bill about 4 times higher than the bid that landed her the job in the first place. Though she's nice and resourceful, I am unlikely to hire her in the future. This billing snafu was, in my opinion, quite unprofessional.

Although Walt and Chris did not end up doing the work in my bathroom due to the extensiveness of the damage, I have nothing but positive things to say about both of them. They showed the utmost of honesty and integrity in declining the project, knowing that the money I would have spent to have them "repair" the plaster in my bathroom was ultimately just a "band-aid" and not the best use of my resources. They spent over an hour discussing the project with me and assessing the damage (with the hope of moving forward with the work). You could tell that they did not take the decision lightly and did not like to have to inform me that a repair was not the best course of action -- a lesser company would have proceeded and taken my money regardless. They cleaned up all the plaster that crumbled and left my space immaculate. Furthermore, they charged me nothing for their time, despite losing out on a days work as a result. I'll admit, I have never hired people to do interior painting of my home in the past, but I will definitely be hiring them the next time I have work to be done in my home.

John Macnab Plastering
5.0
Mr. Macnab did excellent work, even going above and beyond the initial order request. Very knowledgeable and professional in his craft. My brother and I are fixing up an old house. Several walls had water damage, old plaster, and holes that needed repair. If my brother or I had a question about a wall that looked like it needed repair, he explained what could or couldn't be done and offered suggestions. He did more work than was originally ordered. My brother and I are very happy with the work Mr. Macnab did. He kept the work area clean and picked up; he was very conscientious of the property. Both my brother and I would hire Mr. Macnab again and we have already recommended him to others.

The work done was very good. The workers were friendly. There were a few missed spots that never got done, but I also didn’t put tape on them to point them out, so it was at least partly my fault. My main complaint was with the office’s delay in contacting me when the job took longer than they’d initially thought it would take.

I called twice last week regarding plaster repair. I left my name, telephone number and a general idea of what I wanted to have done. I never received any call back.

Called Phil Norman for an estimate and he quickly responded with a very fair quote. After Phil started the job it quickly became apparent that there would be more plaster repair than originally thought. Several of the cracks in the stairwell had apparently been repaired many years ago, but now the cracks had broken through the old repairs and needed extensive plastering. Phil has a unique plaster repair material and process that does an outstanding job of blending the repair of the cracks into the surrounding areas. This should be a very long lasting repair. He was very thorough in his work and extremely tidy -- he totally cleaned up each day. Phil has a blog that shows the pictures of our repairs with more details of how he accomplished the job.

Phil Norman did plaster repair for me a number of years ago, and did a wonderful job. He has also recently gave me some of his flexible grout, a product he makes himself, to use for crack repairs in my lathe and plaster walls. The grout is great! It is easy to use, but I won't be able to say how it holds up long-term for a while yet. But I am very optimistic. Phil is a joy to work with.

Phillip responded to my initial email promptly and expressed concern that he may not be the right person for the job; he prefers smaller repair plaster projects. When I emailed him back indicating that it may not be as big of a job as I made it sound via email, he called me promptly and discussed it with me, giving me lots of advice and suggestions, but ultimately recommending that another plasterer from Angie's List may be my best bet. I appreciated his honesty, the time he took to respond to me and discuss my needs, and his concern for his rating on Angie's List. If I were to need smaller plaster repairs and/or attic work (access doors/flooring) I wouldn't hesitate to contact him again.

Nice fellow arrived about 30 minutes late. I had three repairs I needed done. Two were in plaster walls, and one was in drywall. While the worker was very pleasant, he did not have the skill, tools, or materials to repair or work with plaster. This was surprising, as the deal was advertised as for repairs in either drywall or plaster. He began to work on the first repair which was a 1.5 ft diagonal plaster crack. As he worked, the plaster kept spalling and the hole got bigger. He did not seem to have experience with plaster. He did not have any plaster or materials to fill the hole. I finally redirected him from this project and it is still not complete to this date. I redirected the worker to the easier drywall repair, which he did very well. The last repair was a smaller hole in a plaster wall after some electrical work. He did an ok job. I had to do final sanding and a bit more mudding and more sanding before I could paint it. I called and spoke with Diane who is the local area scheduler to express my dissatisfaction. She promised to get talk with her supervisor and get right back to me. She never called me back. I'm not mean. The worker was very polite, yet he didn't have the skill or materials to actually work on plaster -- this despite a pre-service call I made to both the scheduler and the worker explaining that I did indeed have both plaster and drywall repairs and could they accommodate them. I wasted 3 hours and now have a bigger problem on my hands. Not good.

Tim came to look at the job the same afternoon we first spoke to him and gave us a rough estimate of how much his time and material costs would be. He was able to begin with a couple of days. He showed up on time every day, and protected the floors in his work area. After beginning the plaster repairs, he took samples of the paint and had the color matched, so paint was ready when the plaster was ready to receive it. Four days later, the library ceiling, the foyer walls, the upstairs landing and hallway ceiling and walls look incredible.

Recent Review: Mr. Lo returned my calls, was prompt with an estimate, had his people here as promised and the job looks well done. Small glitch, (no biggie). They tracked plaster out the door and round the house, but the raid helped wash it away. We recommend his company.

Recent Review: From start to finish Rob was very responsive and punctual. He was consistently on time and if he was running late he would call and let me know. Example: He called to let me me know that he would be 15 minutes late and this happened maybe 2 times. He always kept me informed and educated about the process. I always knew what was happening and when it would happen. Rob is an excellent craftsman. He is very skilled and has high standards. He does not suffer fools, in other words, he expects high standards in others. His history includes master shipbuilder of yachts and sailboats. He is a verbal guy, educated and has traveled the world with wonderful stories. I am extremely pleased with my new elegant bathroom. Since my circa 1927 bathroom had basically never been remodeled, there were a few surprises along the way. Rob did not think the lath and plaster need to be completely removed and afterwards wished that he had included that in his original bid. When he went to install the ceiling fan vent, he encountered a solid wood block between the ceiling joists. This required a great deal of effort to remove and a partial removal of the lath and plaster ceiling. He was able to seamlessly patch the ceiling with sheet rock, not an easy task. There were several adjustments and changes along the way. Rob always listened to my ideas. If he wasn't sure it could work, he would think about it rather than just say no it can't be done. Most of the time he made it work. His finished work was the best. The original woodwork on the cabinets that were not removed look new. The plumbing and tile work were subcontracted. They were both excellent and I am extremely pleased with their work. It is clear that Rob has used them almost exclusively and knows their work is up to his high standards. Rob does have a counter top provider but I was very particular about the look I wanted for my counter tops. In the end I used a provider that had the marble look in quartz that I loved in stock. It was a new design, so of course it was more expensive. I also found my own shower glass installer and Rob liked them so much he plans to use them in the future. Rob is a happy guy with a strong personality. He has a strong work ethic and gets the job done. His wife helps him out as a go-fer and even a heavy lifter. They work as a team. I would definitely use Rob in the future.

Recent Review: Diane at Eye Candy Interiors is wonderful! She has done three different projects for us and she displayed absolute professionalism every time with excellent knowledge of materials, procedure and execution. Her color consult was spot on! She right away knew what we were (inarticulately) trying to say about what we wanted out of the new color. She recognized and clarified what was not quite right about the original color (a color that we picked and was not quite right and we had lived with for a 7 years) and found us a new one that was much more of what we were wanting out of paint. She recommended high quality paint with low/no VOC paint so that there was virtually no odor at all, good for her while she is working too! She found us a coupon that was great deal too! The trim paint is applied perfectly; I don t think I found a brush stroke. She is thorough in her prep work and clean up; the house was spotless when we returned. She gave great advice about plaster repairs that needed attention and some texturing inconsistencies that were on the walls. Some work we had her do and some that we thought needed work, we learned we could wait a bit on. That was great since we were doing all this the week of Thanksgiving and had company coming in a matter of days. She finished exactly when she said she thought it would be done for what the bid was. I would highly recommend Diane, she is a pleasure to work with and we would definitely hire her again, in fact she is about to start on two more rooms for us.

Recent Review: It went very well. Shawn was a pleasure to work with- very prompt in response to questions, and I had a few changes thrown in during the project that he was very flexible on. We decided to vault the ceiling in the nursery in order to leave the collar ties exposed (beautiful 100 year old fir). This meant for a difficult install because it wasn't possible to get full sheets up in the tight spaces above the collar ties. It also meant masking off the exposed wood so it wouldn't get drywall mud all over it. Shawn came out and carefully wrapped each 2x4 in paper and taped off at the edges prior to mud and priming. The finished product looks great. They also did a great job patching all of the holes in plaster walls from blown-in insulation and matching the existing wall texture. They were very competitive on price and the quality of work overall was fantastic. Came out again to fix a few screw pops no questions asked. I would highly recommend these guys!

Recent Review: Very good experience. Joshua is responsive and on time and does very good work. We had a little bit of an issue with having the plaster meet the granite in an even reveal, but Joshua was willing to make it right. He came back several times to make sure the job was completed to our satisfaction. He's also very tidy and conscientious. It looks really great and we are happy we found him.

Recent Review: Steve is wonderful to work with. We hired him to skim coat a very rough cement basement wall. He came on time for an estimate, was certain of what he could do and how it would work out. He was prompt to reply to any questions. He showed up when he said he would. The job was finished within his estimate of cost and time. Steve is a master craftsman, a rare find these days. He takes care from setup to cleanup. His work is meticulous. The finished product exceeded our expectations. Obviously Steve enjoys doing what he does and is proud of it. He should be.

Recent Review: I hired Fresh Paint to re-paint the exterior of my house and had a terrific experience. PROS: high quality paint job, lead paint encapsulation, no delay in scheduling, and a very good price. The company was super easy to work with and even threw in some upgrades at no charge. CONS: None. The overall experience was outstanding and I will hire them again. I called Fresh Paint because I needed to have the exterior of my house painted, but I got a lot of more mileage from hiring this company since they also offer general contacting services. The owner, Randy, has painting crews and carpentry crews so in addition to the exterior paint job, Fresh Paint also fixed the flashing on my roof, replaced dry root wood on my dormer, and repaired a hole in a bedroom closet. When the carpenters were here, I asked for a small fence to be erected in the side yard and they were very accommodating. It was a small extra charge to add the fence because it was outside of the scope of the original contract, but the price was very reasonable since the carpenters were already here. This was the advantage of working with Fresh Paint because they offer general contracting services. If I had hired only a painting company, I would have had to manage two different companies and I think I would have paid a lot more. Picking Fresh Paint from the beginning was an easy choice. Before signing the contract with Fresh Paint, I got one other estimate from a painting company that was 40% more expensive than Fresh Paint, offered a smaller scope of work (Fresh Paint included carpentry work with their quote), AND the other company had a 4-week delay in starting. Fresh Paint was the clear winner. I signed the contract with Fresh Paint to repaint the exterior on a Thursday and work was totally finished the following Wednesday. The new paint job looks wonderful. Even our neighbors have said how much better the house looks. I recommend Fresh Paint to anyone in Portland and am looking forward to my next home improvement project with them!

Recent Review: It went awesome! Frank and his son Frankie came and did the work quickly and efficiently- it looks like the french doors and closet were always there! I am a realtor- have my own real estate company- Portland Creative Realtors- a family company with my 3 daughters as partners and we are extremely busy- so use alot of contractors and see good work and not so good work, ethical contracters, and those who are not! Frank is everything you want in a contractor! And I think it is cool that Frank works with his son- it is a family business too! Small and local! That is what we need to support- more local family businesses! Especially when the do the kind of work Frank does!

Recent Review: I can't say enough how great Walt and Chris were to work with. They expertly fixed a three-foot hole in our plaster ceiling (we have a 1929 home), and then checked the rest of the ceiling for any other soft spots and hairline cracks, repairing those as well. Then they meticulously went over the entire ceiling and matched the existing texture. Walt and Chris are masters at integrating the right amount of texture: they made the ceiling look seamless while still preserving its character. They are artists and consummate professionals, not to mention genuinely delightful guys. If you have an historic home in need of plaster and / or paint TLC, look no further. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.

Recent Review: We weren't sure what we were getting into when our contractor told us that our existing walls and ceiling were plaster, and we would need a plasterer to repair the plaster ceilings and blend the new drywall with the existing plaster walls. We've never had any experience with plaster. But Christian did his first piece of the job, finishing the wall in the stairwell, and we were so impressed, both with the product and with his work. The wall was perfectly smooth, perfectly flat. The ceilings with the sanded finish are even more beautiful than we ever dreamed, and the Venetian plaster above the fireplace is amazing. We really appreciated the care Christian took both with his work and with our belongings. We were living in the house during the remodel, and Christian was extremely careful about masking everything, protecting our stuff, and cleaning up daily. He always had the best interest of the project in mind when he gave us advice, and we came to rely on his opinion and trusted him completely. We definitely will hire him again when we update the rest of the house.
