Reviews in Portland for Installing Hardwood Floors

Macadam Floor And Design
5.0
We were actively searching for flooring to remodel a condo we had purchased. We had been to several stores and gotten bids for installation but just hadn't found the wood that "wowed" us. We went to a Portland Home Show to look for some other remodel needs and while we were there we saw Macadam Floor and Design's booth and they had a 15% "show discount" so we headed down to the store the next day. There we met Zac and spotted a lovely Kahrs flooring that was beyond our budget. Zac did a great job of putting together a very competitive bid with this floor we REALLY wanted and we went with his price. We needed to have a variety of trade work done before scheduling installation so we planned out a month and he was able to plan his "best" installers, John for the wood floors and Alex for the carpet. They all arrived on the day scheduled, did everything exactly as agreed, and it looks fantastic! It was a fairly complex installation with a number of small spaces, corners and cuts but it looks absolutely perfect. We realized that we had used this store about 20 years ago in a different location and we are happy we "found" them again. Although we did increase our budget, we got a much better product and the outcome was exactly what we wanted. I highly recommend them for a great showroom, un-pressured service, someone that listened to our needs and gave us freedom to review the various products and come to our own decision. Zac even gave us recommendations for a similar wood with a different product line if we wanted to be at our first price point (which was around $2000 less) but in the end, we were better served to go with the Kahrs. Oh, and the carpet is perfect too! Keep an eye out, maybe you'll see our place on Houzz soon!

Ernest was great to work with. Him and his wife Janet are a dynamic duo. There were set backs on this project, like any other, but they worked through them and the floors look great. They worked late into the night to get it done.

I will NEVER recommend him!!!! I called him to bid tear out old flooring and install new hardwoods. He was very responsive to come over and bid the work. I gave Phil a detailed bid without the $ amounts of wanted we wanted done so there would not be any confusion as to what we expected. The list stated very clearly what we wanted, tear out and labor- dust proofing ( putting plastic on doorways to protect rooms not under construction), contents and furniture moving- remove/save existing wood base board, closets and bedrooms- remove/discard existing wood flooring in entry, vinyl flooring and particle board underlayment in kitchen, carpet, pad, tack strip in hall, family room, and den. Provide/ install new wood flooring prefinished NAIL down product. The bid went on reinstall cleanup etc. etc. I wanted to make sure he was bidding apples to apples and the other bid was from a contractor that has done many great jobs in the neighborhood. I have and many other people know if it is not in writing up front there will always be misunderstandings. Phil told me no problem, he has been doing flooring for 15 years. He told me to go to CFM and pick out the flooring we wanted and let him know.We picked out a kentwood product and I had him come over and look at it, read the sizes, width and thickness and ok it before I ordered it, and he said it was great, so I ordered it. Phil put the boxes of flooring in the living room several weeks before he was going to do the job, and never once said the flooring was not what he expected. He started the job, tore out al the flooring and said we have a problem, the flooring is thinner than you showed me. I said no it is not I still have the sample YOU ok'd to order and I showed it to him, he said nothing. He said we have to build up the floor because the door casings are to short for the flooring, I said why didn't you tell us and he said I did not know until we took out the carpet. Not knowing what was under the carpet or the other flooring is a lie, I watched him pull up the heating registers and the carpet less than a foot from the door casing when looking at the brick by the fireplace. I said so what are the options, he said the floor can be floated, I said what is the difference when it is finished. Phil said NOTHING, it will look the same it will just be floating instead of nailed down. I said we are between a rock and a hard place, I trust you to make it right. The next day I was gone when Phil and his workers were there and when I came home that night the entire area was covered with particle board and the biggest construction sawdust mess I have ever seen left in an occupied home in 25 years of property management. It took my husband over an hour with a shop vac to clean up, oh and by the way, they don't bring one to clean up piles as they go. I just thought we can clean up at night after them as long as they get the floors done right. Phil started laying the floor in the den/office and it looked beautiful and I was happy it looked so nice and then he left a gap in the floor at the french door between the office and family room and I said why is there a gap, he said for an expansion joint / T molding, I said you did not say we were going to have a speed bump in the middle of the floor, and he said you have to have it or the manufactures warranty is void, and there will be one in the hall, great yet another suprize we do not want. I told Phil I hated that and I use a walker and tripping strips in the floor is not an option, he said he would mill them flat and they will not be a problem. I was so frustrated at that point and I could not do anything about. Bottom line he did the job the quickest, easiest and cheapest for him, because he prides himself on not ever changing his bid but he had me buy $467 worth of padding he needed and I have beautiful flooring he raised to high because he said the door casing were to high, yet he cut all but one that I could see off and he put ugly dark brown caulk (as a filler, not finish) at one and I said that looks horrible and he said that is the best I can do the door casing is to low, you said they were all to high. Phil just works as he goes instead of looking at the entire picture and the homeowner does not know what it will be like until he is finished. I have two speed bumps people trip on, ugly brown caulk, little particle board ramps tucked under the carpet into the bedrooms and living room and a pocket door that will not open and he said he would come and fix the pocket door but he did not show up the day he said he would. I have a beautiful new kitchen and the contractor did a wonderful job but I thought his bid was a little high for the floors so I went with Phil, what a mistake, I though I was saving a couple thousand $ and it cost more after I bought everything he needed and I will have to pay more now to bring the floors up in the master bedrm and bath because that is the next project, and he knew that. After talking to floor specialist we know now what he should have done but I do not want to spend another 10k and go through the mess. We are not happy and we have ourselves to blame because I seen one staircase he did and it looked great, so I thought he was able to make all floor great

COMPLETE HARDWOOD FLOORS

I started doing work with them several years ago and I still use them. I put the plywood on the floors and the crew came in to install the hardwood. Their price is very low and they do pretty good work; there were some places that needed to be corrected but all of the rework is free.

THEY EVEN CAME BACK IN AND REFINISHED IT, BECAUSE IT DIDN'T TURN OUT THE CORRECT COLOR. THEY WERE HARD TO WORK WITH BECAUSE THEIR ENGLISH WAS NOT VERY GOOD AND THEY WANTED TO WORK UNDER THEIR CONDITIONS ONLY, EVEN IF IT INCONVENIENCED OUR ENTIRE FAMILY.

The owner was really conscientious when it came to quality. They did come back and do some work after. The overall experience wasn't that great due to the fact that it took longer than expected. The price was fair.

Decca Hardwood Company
5.0
My husband and I were very impressed with the quality of work we received from Decca Harwood Company. We installed Brazillian Teak and the floor is gorgeous. The entire process with this company was smooth from getting the in-home estimate with samples of our product to the workers arriving on time every day. There were no surprises. I am a perfectionist and believe that if you hire a company to do a job, it needs to be done well and on time. All the cuts, the craftmanship, everything went well. Decca Hardwood Company was also very competitively priced, they have a wonderful showroom and the staff is very knowledgeable. I plan on using this company again to install the same product in other areas of our house and highlyrecommend them!

A&P HARDWOOD FLOORS
3.0
Our experience with A&P Hardwood Floors was just okay. We had called several other people that we really wanted to work with, but they were not very good at getting back to us. So we talked to someone who recommended Fong and he was really responsive. Which was awesome. He called me right back every time I called him and he was really friendly. The end product we were not as happy with. We have had floors done before and we were really happy. This time they were just okay. The are some bubbles in the finish and there are some places where there are pieces missing. Like they lost a little sliver when they were installing. We had just had the walls painted and we discussed with them that they should hang plastic to keep the dust down and to try not to mark up our walls. They left big hand prints all over our white walls and they didn't hang any plastic. The people we had previously worked with had used the plastic and it kept the dust down. These guys didn't and their was dust everywhere. These were not prefinished floors. Their pricing was really good.

Recent Review: Alex Freddi Construction is an outstanding company to work with. Alex was very prompt with his estimate, was easy to talk with about design ideas for our space and really wanted to make us satisfied customers throughout our project. He encourages you to ask questions and understand everything before starting the project. Our project manager Bob and his partner Bill were just top notch. They were on time, pros, clean and efficient. They both have extensive knowledge in the construction business and communication with them was easy. Bob and Bill's work ethic and daily attention to our questions and concerns was wonderful. We wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future. Bob was easy to talk with, open to ideas and calm throughout the ups and downs of our remodel...which were very few considering the extent of it. Bob has experience in custom cabinets and woodworking. He was invaluable to us since we assembled Barker cabinets and then Bob installed the cabinets plus added gorgeous trim and crown molding. Bill is a pro and has installed hundreds of hardware floors and brings years of framing experience to a project. He worked long and hard making sure that the floor was done well. They used so many varied skills during our project - they were truly an amazing team. We had a kitchen remodel done plus other varied projects and after 9 weeks we still like them! Also, we want to include a special mention of our experience with ProDesign Solutions in Tigard - an Alex recommendation. They were just the best - Suzanne's and Jean's color sense was just spot-on as was their patience and excellent input while we were deciding what we wanted for flooring and tile. They are the best in customer service. Because of Alex, Bob and Bill's professionalism and work ethic plus based on what we know of other remodels, we are incredibly happy to have worked with Alex's company.
