Reviews in Pittsburgh for Installing Retaining Walls

Inspectioneering LLC

We contacted Harel to do the inspection because we wanted a structural engineer to look at our concerns with the floor and retaining wall. He did a great job with everything. He was very thorough and took his time, like checking every electrical outlet and a complete inspection of the roof, furnace, and AC. He knew a lot about the structure of our house by looking for small clues. He took pictures of almost everything and wrote down notes during the inspection so he wouldn't forget. We were able to successfully use his report, mostly concerning the retaining walls, to negotiate down the price of the house. Very nice and intelligent guy, would definitely recommend!

It went very well. Bob was very professional and gave us an honest opinion on any follow up work we’d need in the future. He also gave us a couple of quick fixes to do in the meantime to help out.

Excellent advice from the owner. He strongly suggested having a disinterested third party of structural engineers review the home and develop plans for remediation, if needed. He mentioned that if work needed to be done, the structural engineers could draw up a remediation plan, and bids for work would be comparable.

I had one retaining wall that was failing and another one that need to be reinforced. After going through several contractors and numerous estimates--I had trouble picking the right one because nobody was willing to do the job, partly because there was no heavy equipment access. Finally, I got in touch with EFS. Mr. Brian MacCreary who worked out the details with their engineers was very professional, knowledgable, and responsive. Although, EFS provided me with the most expensive quote, the work they did was fabulous. Most of the work was hand labor because of access that was limited as the walls were on a steep hill. The crew was very professional, on time and got the job done in the exact time frame as stated. Not to mention the care they took to clean up after the job--you could barely tell that we had such a massive project done in our backyard. These guys are definitely a bit on the expensive side, but you can be assured of a really well done job that they guaranteed for fifteen years. I'd totally hire them again.

He's a guy who gets paid by the hour so I would say his prices were just a little higher than reasonable. He's very thorough, extremely careful, good communicator, knows what he's talking about, and pretty caring. He could have been a little cheaper but that's how he earns his daily bread. The clock starts running because he's a consultant and he's paid by the hour.

Brian McCreary is the structural engineer who came out. We had support pillars put in by another company. This was after we tried to have the pillars put in by Brian McCreary. We had selected him after we interviewed different companies. The other structural engineer we had made some recommendations about our basement, but he didn?t do the actual work. So we called Brian McCreary to do the actual work. He seemed really knowledgeable and we wanted to go with him, but we wanted him to work in conjunction with the other structural engineer. I finally got them to come out together and I couldn?t be there, but my boyfriend was there. They looked at our French drain and they noticed that it was dry. It had rained slightly the previous day, but it had been dry before that. He said that the water wasn?t going to our French drain since our sump pump was dry. He also said that it was underlining our foundation. We had some cracks and we finally had them evaluated. So we needed these supports. They made my boyfriend believe like our whole foundation was about to crumble. He wanted to put in a new foundation and a new French drain. He only looked at our sump pump and stamped on our floor. He wanted $12000 to put in the new French drain. So my boyfriend panicked. He was ready to give our house back to the bank and to move out because he thought that the house was ready to collapse. He thought that we couldn?t sell it to anyone either if it collapsed. We had another structural engineer come out after that and he was more qualified at least according to his educational background. I thought that he was more reliable than the first guy. He came and looked at it and said that it was perfectly fine. He told us that the cracks that we see are not an evidence of structural problems. He told us that our French drain was fine. I think Brian McCreary tried to scam us. I don?t know if he did or he sincerely might have believed that we had to rip out our French drain and put in a new one, but it seemed to me like he was making work for himself. So that to me was pretty serious. He was punctual though. The price he quoted for the French drain was extremely high. He didn?t do any work. He tried to sell something that wasn?t needed to be done and that was really wrong. He was responsive. It did take a while to schedule, but that was because we had to reconcile his schedule with the second structural engineer who came out. We will never use Brian McCreary again. We need to pay the second structural engineer for the visit, but we didn?t have to pay to Brian because he didn?t do the work.

Eric came and gave me an estimate to replace and reinforce a retaining wall for 7500$. After our verbal agreement for him to come and down, get an advance check and begin the work when convenient-- he became non responsive, never followed up and barely remembered the quote he had given me when I talked to him again. It was awful to track him down to start the job. I finally gave up and went with a different contractor.

I have two natural springs in my back yard, so my yard was like a swamp. I knew that I had to get it done and the retaining wall was crumbling, so I needed to find someone who could do both. I contacted several companies and asked them if they could do both and finally found this company. I knew it was not going to be your typical job. He came out and saw how much water there was and thought there must be water in the basement. He brought his meter and found there was no moisture. He wasn't sure if French drains would work, so he took pictures and measurements and brought it back to the engineers. They thought they would be here for a week and a half, but they were here for 3 weeks. They ran into so many different things as they were going along. They were expensive but for me they were worth every penny. For what I got, the pricing was good; you get what you pay for. The back yard is now dry and everything is holding up well.

I have never dealt with a contractor who was as meticulous about his work. He covered everything and made every effort to keep the dust down. He even vacuumed out the holes so as to prevent dirt from falling when the covers he placed over the openings were removed! We already have him scheduled for the next phase of the project.

Rick Horn is very professional and showed up when he said he was going to show up. He has experience in this area. It?s a pretty peculiar situation that needs to be addressed. He was very friendly and chatty. He is a very nice and good guy. He is a veteran like my husband. He gave me everything that I had asked him to give me. I would certainly consider him in the future. We are basically supporting the joists in the house. The house is 120 years old. The joists are rotting at the ends and some of them have pretty significant splits in them. So they are going to be re-supporting the existing joists in the house as well as adding to the back foundation wall because the house has settled a bit. It has slipped partially off the back foundation wall. So they are going to be re-supporting that as well.

Recent Review: This was a great experience. After spending quite a bit of time getting bids from people who either wanted to install or just wanted to design, finding Jim at CN solutions was just what I needed. He talked with me about what my goals were. I did not want to put a ton of money in the house as I planned to sell soon, so I just wanted a nice, affordable update. He was great about keeping me in budget and within only a few days, had a bid and a design. He brought me samples of things and the only trip I had to take, was to the tile place to pick out the floor. As a busy professional, this was great. The entire process from start to finish took about 2 weeks, but the Thanksgiving Holiday was in there, so their work time was very efficient. They were great about making a few changes near the end to accomodate my changed mind on some things and worked to get me exactly what I wanted. The Kitchen is beautiful. I could not be happier!

Recent Review: eric and his crew did a great job. the sill walls were replaced - i wish i could have watched it happen because i can see the new sill walls in there but i can't figure out how they got there. joists sistered strongly - support poles replaced with thicker metal poles and welded into place. a structural engineer had eliminated the need for 1 of the spec'd items that the inspector had recommended having checked and eric took that off of the list of things to do and reduced the estimate commensurate. the structural engineer signed off on his work and wrote a letter that the home is in great shape now and structurally sound and the work was done quickly, expertly and on budget. that's what you want and that's why i am writing a positive review.

What do customers in Pittsburgh say about Retaining Wall Installation?

I requested a quote and received a call back right away, but took a long time to get a call back after I gave the company the requested information. Then they called me a few days later to notify me that the Engineer did not want to do the structural inspection because I already had a failed retaining wall at the property. They also told me the engineer did not want his name involved with the inspection, I am not sure what that means. My wife and I required an inspection from a licensed engineer to do the report on what we already knew, all they had to do is come verify and provide a report for our lender. Not to mention that they initially asked for $950 on a 726 sq.ft. property. We decided to go with a different license Structural Engineer who was polite and charged a lot less than this company. He gave us his availability the same day, I did not have to wait days before I heard back.
