Reviews in Madison for Installing Vinyl Plank Flooring

Harrison Construction

We took out the carpeting, wallpaper, and painted. Duane and his son Ben put new vinyl plank flooring in all the rooms and closets of our 1228 sq foot, 70 year old home. He did it for a better price than regular flooring companies and did quality work with attention to detail. Then, they totally gutted our little and very outdated bathroom. He made some good suggestions and fixed various things along the way that had not been anticipated. They found there was no insulation in the outside walls and added that. They replaced the 24 inch bathroom door with a 30 inch door that opened the opposite way and were able to save the original glass door knob and make it work in the new door. The pedestal sink and round seat toilet really helped make the small bathroom seem bigger. The vinyl plank flooring was a major update from the old thin carpet. They put new walls and painted and added a ceiling vent fan and added all the fixtures I had purchased and put them were we wanted them to be. Again, the price was very fair. They did quality work and always attention to detail. They worked above and beyond. They communicated with us and were always professional and tried to accommodate all my requests in a very gracious way. It all took longer than we thought it would and yes, some improvements increased the price a little, but everything was so worth the time and cost. He is honest and fair and hardworking and the finished product is high quality. We will hire them again when we are ready for our next big project.

Floor Coverings International Of Madison

This company was recommended to me through a contractor friend. I purchased carpet for a basement stairway and vinyl flooring that looked like a darker oak wood floor. They installed both the loop carpeting and vinyl flooring within a day or two and it looked great. So far both products have been durable and some guests thought the vinyl floor was actually wood. The vinyl flooring is easy to clean and great for our band equipment, kids, and exercise equipment. The service was wonderful, the installers were professional and clean, and I would definitely recommend this company to my friends and family. Just an FYI, they meet clients by appointment at their little office, but they have a lot of products to look through. They also came to the house to do a measurement and estimate.

It went great! We renovated 3 duplexes this summer and had Scott install all the flooring. We really couldn't be happier with the job he did and the way the floors turned out. Scott is very friendly, hard working, and takes a lot of pride in the job he does. We did a lot of shopping around before we decided on Scott, and his prices and quality of work just can't be beat. I highly recommend you give him a call

CarpetsPlus of Wisconsin
4.0
Overall we love the new flooring. It's beautiful, reasonably durable, and much easier to clean. We chose CarpetsPlus because the cost for more or less the same product was 20-30% lower than other estimates. As is so often the case, the salesperson was fantastic before I signed the contract. She was super helpful getting us samples and helping us pick the right flooring for our space. She was knowledgeable and didn't push her own opinions too hard. Communication was still good while we were scheduling installation, but not quite as accommodating. It also turned out that the estimate wasn't right the first time because she hadn't included some little piece of something for the edges of the room. It only added about 1% to the total cost, so it wouldn't have changed our decision to use this company, but it was still a pain because it was late in the process. The salesperson blamed the estimator for not telling her they were necessary. OK, but as the customer I don't care whose fault it was, I just want it corrected with a minimum of fuss. Then there were the trim pieces that were too thick for the space under the doors so that the doors had to be cut down. They were surprised when I expected them to take care of cutting down the doors. I get that some circumstances are "unforeseen" but how unusual can this be when you install flooring? Why didn't they check the fit before ordering the trim? The installation team did a nice job, but mostly ignored our agreed-on schedule. They even left one of the rooms half-finished one evening, knowing that we had plans for the room the next day and promising that it would be finished in time for our event. It wasn't. We called the company that morning to find out when they would be arriving to finish. They actually did arrive 10 or 15 minutes before our event started and were surprised that we had already moved the furniture back in place to hold the event on the half-finished floor. I think they were subcontractors rather than employees - judging by the extent to which they and CarpetsPlus threw each other under the bus. Several pieces of trim have come off and need to be glued back down again. Easy enough to do, but shouldn't need to be done a month after installation. After the installation started, I never heard from CarpetsPlus again, except for one message asking for payment. They never called to check in on the process or ask how we liked our new floors. They didn't ask for feedback on their installation team, which they clearly need to do. Bottom line, I probably would hire them again, and just expect some problems. We saved about $5,000 over competitors, and we didn't have $5,000 worth of problems, so it was ultimately worth it. Make your own decision accordingly!

WELLHOUSE FLOORING & DECORATING

Wellhouse installed flooring for multiple homes in my area. More than not had significant problems, some requiring whole floors to be ripped out and redone. On our floors, they did not meet manufacturer specifications for making floors level. Ridges with >1/4" clearance under level, with tolerance at no more than 1/8" per 10 feet. They did not follow manufacturer's requirements for an absolutely smooth surface, did not follow manufacturer's instructions for materials to use under floor. Originally denied their company sealed the gypcrete beneath, which would mean all the glue holding down the tiles would come up. Later then claimed to have done it. The floor is a soft tile, and shows ripples and bulges, which mar the beauty of the materials. The floor was $10.50 a square foot. They were required to seal the surface with 4 coats of urethane. They somehow missed a 6" x 1" strip in a doorway. I am doubtful that the same 6 inch strip in a traffic area was missed 4 times, and suspect they did not seal floors according to manufacturer requirements. Their installation has voided the company warantee on the materials. The rep from company that made the tile reviewed photos of the floor, and called it "unprofessional" and said that it should be replaced by "a qualified installer." Flooring installations in the majority of other houses I know they worked on had significant defects, including wrong size & color of tile. Whole floors had to be ripped up and redone. Their "fixes" for problems were worse than the problem, often. Debris was tiled over, despite manufacturer instructions to vacuum floor before laying the tiles. Their "solution" was to whack the places with debris with a mallet, reasoning it would smash the debris into the gypcrete. The tile is a soft, bendable material. It is a no-brainer that whacking a soft thing on top of a hard thing would of course damage the back side of the tile. They have agreed to replace some of the flooring, but not all. We are in negotiations now, and have chosen another type of flooring that is more "idiot proof." I have been told that instead of removing the baseboards to allow the 1/4" needed for a floating floor, they will just go up to the baseboards, then slap a quarter round on top of it. When thicker floors transitioned to thinner floors, they did not meet the ADA requirements. Some had an edge about 1" high, which would not allow ease of use for walkers are wheelchairs. Footprints were tracked from the sealed floor, across the ceramic tile. The ceramic tile is the wrong color.

Dan Mancl
5.0
We purchased our vinyl floors from Floor360. Floor360 contracted Dan Mancl to do the installation. We felt the price was reasonable for the service that we received from Dan. He tore out carpet and parkay flooring that was 48 years old. He laid down a new floor to even things out and fixed the squeaks. When we asked that he leave the parkay pieces for us to sift thru, Dan left two separate piles that contained good and not as good pieces. (We have two additional rooms that have parkay floors and wanted pieces as spares for repairing.) Dan went above and beyond. He showed up when he said he would, he cleaned any mess before he left for the day and was an all around good person to work with. Our floors are wonderful and we contribute much of that to Dan and his professionalism. We highly recommend Dan for any flooring work you might need.

They responded quickly and did a pretty good job. There was a ding in the floor that I had to call them back for and they fixed that. They also used an adhesive on the vinyl that made it look too shiny. They also left a bit of a mess.

We were shopping around for plank vinyl flooring. He gave us a few minutes to look without crowding us, then came around to help. His estimate was far below others and he was immediate with a price quote. It's an easy to install floor, but we needed to get the product pretty quick. He called me the next morning (before the other guy we we working with even got back to me on a price match possibility) and I ordered the floor then and we were able to pick it up at the distributor's warehouse, which was closer to home and much more efficient. Shopping to pick up time was less than 24 hours. That's my kind of action! :)Scott seems to know his stuff and was right on his game. I will be going back to him for other items and quotes for sure! THANKS Scott!!

John is the man! From the first visit to the final installation date he was amazing to work with. We had Home Depot come out as well, but their overall caginess and inability to answer questions about the project while they were at our house did not instill much trust. We knew our house was going to be a bit more difficult and John was able to answer all of our questions with simple solutions that in the end made the choice easy for us. Everything was done in a timely fashion from initial estimate through installation. I've had some great experiences on Angie's list, but John was the best. I will definitely be using him for all of my flooring needs in the future.

Recent Review: MY EXPERIENCE WITH MALKIN'S WAS PLEASANT. AND MY NEW FLOOR LOOKS GREAT. THE SALESPEOPLE AND INSTALLERS WERE PLEASANT AND PROFESSIONAL. I ONLY HAD TO HAVE THEM COME BACK ONCE TO REPLACE A STRIP (NOT SURE WHAT THE CORRECT TERM IS FOR THIS PIECE) BETWEEN THE FLOOR AND MY LIVING ROOM CARPET SO THE TRANSITION IN FLOORING WAS SMOOTHER AND LESS BULKY. I COMPARED PRICES WITH SOME OF THE BIG HOME IMPROVEMENT/HARDWARE STORES IN THE AREA, AND MALKIN'S WAS VERY COMPARABLE.
