I was fooled by the A ratings Nick of Time had gotten and gave him a call to give us an estimate. Ours was a big project and I wanted to make sure I found someone who was reliable, honest, reasonable and professional. Nick gave us a good price, so we decided to go with him. As the job progressed I found out that I had to point out every imperfection to them. It was as if they didn't have any standards on how well a job should be done. At first Nick would point those imperfections to his workers and they would fix it. But over time, he started saying things like "You know for this price, you are not going to get perfection", or "This job is taking too long"!!!! Yes, it indeed took longer than expected, partially because of the scheduling issues with the flooring people, but mainly because of me having to go through everything they were doing that day, and them having the go back and fix it properly. Since I wasn't the one doing the job, I don't understand why I was being told that it was taking too long. I didn't bargain with Nick on the price and every time they were here, they left with a check made out for the job they did that day. I really didn't understand why he asked to be paid so often since I wasn't going to run away without paying him in the middle of the job. When we had told Nick that we wanted to change the doors and keep the door jams, he said it was possible to sand the jams and make them look good. Unfortunately the jams do not look anything like we thought they would. He said we should have gotten pre-hung doors if he knew that we were going to do such a big job of renovating the whole 4 rooms with hallway. I thought that the quote he gave us was on those rooms anyway. We noticed that the doors we purchased to be put in weren't painted properly. After seeing they were indeed not acceptable, he took the doors down and sanded them to paint them again which was nice of him. Because we had bought hardcore doors he had to put a third hinge to hold the door better which he repeatedly told us he wasn't happy about. When they were installing the baseboards and moulding after the hardwood floors were refinished, they paid no attention to protect the floors. As a result, floors were scratched and I had to call the floor people again to buff and put another coat on. Also one of Nick's workers had dropped a metal cover from the attic opening on the floor as he was putting iducting. It left a big dent on the newly refinished floors. That couldn't be taken care of. I decided to let it go, knowing there was nothing to be done about it. It took us over 2 months to get done with the 3 rooms and hallway. One month later, we were ready to start the TV room renovation. We called Nick about setting a date to start the job. He said the quote he had given us a month ago about the TV room actually wasn't effective anymore. But he decided to honor his quote later anyway. TV room is a small room, 10 feet by 13 feet which took them 3 weeks to get finished. I reminded them about being careful with the newly refinished hardwood floors this time. When I came to the room I found that they had put the nail-gun machine directly on the floor. The floor was scratched even worse than the other rooms, when I pointed out that to Nick he started yelling at me that he wasn't responsible for that, that he was an honest man. He kept on telling me how this job was taking too long. When I said I didn't understand why he kept telling me that as if I was the one doing the job, he got really mad. At that time, I was teaching piano to a student at my private studio. After 15 minutes of him shouting at me, I came to find that my student had already left without saying anything to me. I called my student to apologize for the scene, she said she understood and advised me to find another handyman. Thankfully, this was an adult student who had been with me for a long time. After calming down, Nick sent his worker to finish the painting job and told us that he was going to pay for buffing the floors and refinishing. We called the hardwood floor guys yet again, and had them come out and fix the floors. After the floors were done, I contacted Nick, he texted me that he wasn't going to finish the job and demanded that he get paid. When I told him I wasn't going to pay him for the doors he hadn't put in yet, he said his job was done and called it a "finished job". After texting him multiple times, he said he was going for a vacation for 10 days and would give me a call when he got back. He came to finish hanging the doors after he got back. His attitude which had gotten worse over the time he worked in my house, was totally unacceptable. I am a pianist and piano teacher who is also a member of faculty at a university. I give concerts in US and around the world. At that time, I had a concert I was preparing for. As he was putting in the door, Nick told me to "stop that noise, and that he couldn't concentrate on his job " when I was practicing. I find it REALLY offensive somebody working in my house is telling me what I can and what I can't do! After he hung the door, I tried to open it, it would get caught on the carpet. When I told him that, he said the door was in, he wasn't going to do anything about it. So to this day, we have to move the carpet to open and close the door. And that is not the only door that needs to be fixed. Another thing we found out later is about the ducting job Nick did. We are recently looking to get air conditioning put in our house. The people who come over to give us estimates told us that the ducting hadn't been done properly. When I told them we just had it done in the last 6 months, they took me to the attic and showed me the asbestos that was laying around, (which he charged us to remove), the ducts that were so loose they were coming off, some of which weren't even taped to anything! I was appalled by the fact that we had paid for a job not done properly and now we have to pay even more to have it fixed. What bothered me most with this whole experience is the lack of professionalism. Nick simply doesn't care if his costumers are happy or not, he's relying on the A ratings he had collected before. He clearly has major anger issues and lets his personal life interfere with his job. He also told us that Angie's List was really "greedy" for charging him a lot of money. Since he makes his living with the calls he gets because of his good ratings from Angie's List, I don't understand why he bad-mouths them. I would recommend everyone to stay away from Nick. I certainly will.
