Reviews for Pocket Door Installation in Indianapolis

Schaefer Improvements
The first appointment was just OK--2 handymen came over. One took down the door framing and molding and removed the pocket door for the first floor powder room The other did a few odd jobs (he did OK, not perfect but not worth complaining about). In removing the pocket door, some molding was broken but I assume that is a normal risk. When I scheduled their return to put the door back on (the door had to be refinished, so this was much later--maybe as much as 2 months), it did not go well. 2 people came over, they brought replacement trim for the piece that had broken off. The door was put back on and appeared to work--I was told there was some caulk that was still wet and to give it some time to dry. The handyman allowed me to open and close the pocket door and it worked--I did not have any complaints at that time. He left, the other had been gone for 30 in already (a little early, but it was a Saturday appt). Later that afternoon, I went into the bathroom and it was clear that the work had not been done properly. When reassembling the molding, it appears they switched the two vertical pieces; in an old house, those peices are not going to be identical. So now one side of the molding sticks out past the top piece and the other side they chisseled off the top peice so that it fit against the vertical peice. They cracked one piece of wood trying to put it back where it did not belong. The molding did not match up on the wall where it used to be, so there is a curled up edge of old wallpaper (that had been skim coated over twice) exposed. And finally, the caulk was everywhere...there are half inch gaps just filled with caulk, and it was just dripping on the woodwork like a bad icing job (although there are probably two big edges that will need to be caulked before it can be painted). After a week, I decided I should give them a chance to make it right so I contacted the owner and I sent pictures. He agreed that it was not good and he promised to come back and fix it. We tried several times to schedule something with no luck, finally in January we had a date and time and I took the afternoon off work but the guy was a no-show. I texted the owner twice about rescheduling and got no reply. To add insult to injury, the pocket door fell off the track at the beginning of March (mind you, we had been in the house 6 years before the first problem). Apparently (according to the carpenter I hired), no stops had been installed to make sure the pocket door did not go too far into the "pocket" and right off the back of the track.

Steve immediately diagnosed the problem. Tried to fix it without cutting into the wall. But had to cut into wall anyway. He offered some lower cost alternatives, but we went with the full fix. The door now works again and all is well.

I thought the service was excellent. I even mentioned the service in our neighborhood newsletter and he received a lot of business because of the article. He was on time, cleaned up well, and the price was fair. I would certainly use their services again.

Repairman called to confirm his arrival time and was very friendly upon arrival. He was able to repair both pocket doors, neither of which I thought could be fixed. He was very careful to show me what parts of the door frame had to be removed to allow him access to the pocket doors, and tried hard to limit any damage or mess to the surrounding trim. He left both rooms cleaner than when he started.

Immediate response to call for estimate, complete description of expected work provided. Work scheduled for middle of the next week. Stairway replacement was a bit difficult due to settling and space constraints. Final stairs workable and sturdy. Bathroom pocket door fixed through cut in wall behind medicine cabinet as agreed. Permanent fix in place, medicine cabinet covers holes. Missed replacing a screw, not a big deal. Main floor pocket doors freed up and workaround (small plastic door stop) put in place to prevent hitting bad spot in track. All work completed within days of first visit.

They were very organized and kept me informed about everything and when things would be done. They were responsive on a couple of small issues that happened during construction. They were flexible when changes were made.

Jeff was able to repair my biggest problem which was having a pocket door repaired. The door wasn't sliding properly and was barely accessible, because opened and closed by sliding into a wall making repairs difficult. Jeff removed the door trim and was able to remove the pocket door. Thedoor track was bent and no parts availab,e since the door was installed in 1940. Jeff straightened the track and adjusted the door so it would hang and glide properly. The door trim was replaced and caulked. Aditional projects included, replacing some boards from a ceiling which Jeff was able to cut and fit as they were tongue and groove, removing an electrical fixture, and trimming doors which no longer opend or closed due to the house settling. Very skilled and knowledgable and plan to use him again.

Recent Review: Shane called me back and made arrangements to come out, he took all measurements and even removed the broken door and took it out even before I had hired him to do the job, he brought the estimate to my house as I did not have the ability to print it out.He was very professional and very curtious.

Recent Review: The job was as easy as it could be and at a fraction of the cost of a new door. I visited the showroom to select and order the replacement glass. They removed the existing glass (three sections)and installed the new glass within 30 minutes. I have more privacy now and avoided the expense of a new door. I have family and friends both in the city and outside who would like to use this service.

Recent Review: We needed to have several areas around doors and ceiling edges repaired due to separation and cracking. We also needed several areas of our ceiling patched/replaced due to some old water damage. Dans ability to match patterns in several areas was very difficult in my opinion and he exceeded my expectation in doing so. The drywall that was replaced is seamless in appearance and matches completely. We also wanted a pocket door between our breakfast nook and family room to provide some privacy. It was a difficult fit into a confined area. The job involved removing some drywall to facillitate the installation and that all was replaced expertly as well. We now have toe privacy we wanted with a professional appearance door. We are very happy.

Recent Review: I was in need of replacing our rusty crawl space door. Not the funnest of home projects to deal with and not really knowing where to begin I did a simple internet search and found Custom Covers and was tickled to see that they are located very near me in Lebanon, IN, and that they are also Angie's List members. Through their website I inquired about their services and sent a photograph of my crawl space access door. The owner, Todd, promptly replied to me and gave me a rough estimate on what it would cost to replace and install a new door which I found to be very reasonable. I really appreciated Todd's willingness to give me a rough idea of what it would cost b/c it then allowed me to compare, budget, and prioritize my spring and quot;to-doand quot; list. Many service providers aren't willing to do this w/o an actual service call. Local hardware stores sell steel doors and I really didn't want to deal with another door rusting or having to paint it to match the house. Oddly, a few crawl space repair companies sell wood doors which I find a bit old-fashion and just not suitable to our house. Custom Covers' doors are aluminum and I just liked their utilitarian-look and I liked the one-stop-shopping they offered. Through a few emails and after coming out to get a proper measurement of the crawl space opening we ordered the access door. Today Todd and his assistant removed the old door and installed the new one. Believe it or not this was my first time to meet Todd face-to-face!!! He arrived on time, was very professional, efficient, quick, and neat. I am thrilled with the new door and am glad to have this small, but necessary home repair now out of the way. If you're looking for a painless and seamless transaction, I can highly recommend Todd and Custom Covers.
