Reviews in Houston for Installing Hardwood Floors

Joe Hardwood Floors

Note - these were real hardwood floors, not composite or engineered. It went generally well, on-schedule and on-budget. Joe was very thorough in the walk-through and the estimate was detailed. He could have communicated more proactively about minor issues that came up. I had previously had existing hardwoods sanded and the dust throughout the entire house was a disaster (different contractor). Joe's crew took care to limit the dust from sanding the new floors and I really appreciated that. We still need to recondition some floors and we will reach out to Joe Hardwood to do that job as well.

My wife and I went to the Floors for Living location on Barker Cypress in Cypress, Texas.? We were greeted by a friendly sales rep named Randy.? Randy helped us select hardwood flooring for our house and never tried to steer us or up-sell us.? He was very patient with us as we asked many questions over the days we were trying to decide. After we made our selection, we were able to schedule the installation on the day that we chose, rather than have to wait on their calendar for an opening.? The day before our installation, we received a call from the installation department verifying the date and letting us know what window of time the installers would call the next day.? Just as promised, the installers called within the window saying that they were on their way and where they were. My floors were installed professionally by Nestor and his crew.? My floors needed to be prepped before the boards were installed.? Nestor did a great job during this process, making sure that? my floor would be ready and floor would be level.? When they returned after allowing the floor to dry, the results were outstanding.? The floors looked great!? We marveled? at the quality of the work.? I definitely recommend Floors for Living for hardwood floor installations.? I will use them again for future projects.

Overall, the experience was excellent. They moved all of our furniture for us. The job was professionally done and they were very competitive on their pricing. The two brothers who did the job worked very well together and have years of experience; they've been in this business for 25+ years. We provided our own flooring, and they completed the installation.

This is the second home that Floors for Living has installed hardwoods for me. Jared at the Louetta location is the best guy to deal with.. He is upfront on products and gets the job done on time like he tells you...great follow up afterwards wanting to know how the job went and if you are satisfied.

Install was smooth. Floors look great. Price was competitive. Job completion from start to finish was faster that than I was quoted by other contractors for the same work. Faster job completion saved me a considerable amount since I was staying in a hotel due to the size of the job and the location of the floors in the house. My hotel bill was about 30 percent less than I estimated with the other bidders. Overall very satisfied.

Our salesman gave us a good price on hardwood flooring. He arrived on time the next day to measure the rooms. He said it was an easy job and would only take one day and wrote that on the paper work. Installation was scheduled for Tuesday. When no installer had called or arrived, I called our salesman. He didn't answer so I left a message. He did not call back. I called the installation phone number on the paper work. I was told our install was scheduled for Wednesday and I said I'm looking at the paper that says Tuesday. She offered to contact a supervisor. Shortly afterward the supervisor called to say he had found a crew and they were on the way. The installation crew arrived mid day. They moved two bedrooms of furniture into the den, spread a minor amount of float compound in each room and said they would return tomorrow. Wednesday mid morning the crew returned, looked at the float material and said it is too wet, we will have to wait until Friday. They also said they didn't have enough flooring and they had brought the wrong shoe moulding. They brought white and we purchased stained wood. So we now sit for three days with two bedrooms out of commission and furniture in the den. I called "Christian", the district manager, who offered only an apology. We took three days off for what we were told would be a one day job. When finally finished, the floor looks good. The process was horrible.

Chic Floors

Chic Floors installed high-end Armstrong flooring in my home on February 2014. The cost of the installation was low and this was reflected in the lack of quality in the workmanship. Door frames were damaged and much of the quarter-round trim was not measured properly. If the measurement was short, the workman just cut off another inch and glued that in. If it was too long, it was jammed in and the door frame was damaged. The flooring turned out to be defective and Ihab, the owner of Chic Floors filed a claim with Armstrong using the help of the distributor. Armstrong agreed to cover the costs to replace the entire floor (approx. 1250 sq. ft.). Ihab told me that I did not need to choose another Armstrong product to replace the flooring, it could be any brand. He also said that if the product I chose cost less, I could get an extra room done. I did not want to extend the wood flooring , so I looked at tile for a bathroom. I visited his store several times and he got me a sample and box of Columbia flooring at my request, which was what I was interested in. This flooring costs $2.50 less per sq. ft. than the Armstrong (per Robert?s Carpet & Fine Flooring). Ihab also showed me various tiles when I would visit his store. I decided on the Columbia flooring and let Ihab know. He sent me an open-ended invoice to sign to cover the costs of any leveling that might be needed, and indicated it should not be more than $350. I asked why Armstrong would not cover that. Ihab?s response: I will talk to them and see if they will cover it. They usually cover all material but not things that are not seen. There is no room in the price of the product to cover for leveling but I will try my best to make them cover it. Thanks Ihab did nothing further. I did agree to pay for moisture barrier glue for $292, which the distributor recommended. I then inquired about the extra tile work and was met with the response below regarding the difference in cost between Armstrong and Columbia (per Robert?s pricing, I calculated over a $3,000 differential): The difference between the two is very little price wise and remember that I am paying for this product out if pocket to accommodate you. I have to get an Armstrong product and put it in storage till I sell it so I'm sorry I cannot give you any more rooms. If you were to buy a cheaper product from Armstrong then that might be the case. Ihab had NEVER mentioned the cheaper product had to be from Armstrong and he had several opportunities to do so. (His statement about having to put product in storage was also incorrect, I found out later from Armstrong). I indicated I was not happy about this. Ihab?s response: Ok, this is not going good over here. I am not a liar. Please sign both papers I sent you and send back. From now on I want everything to be documented. Please include a credit card for the $292 to cover glue. I did not feel comfortable signing anything and berated myself for not getting Ihab?s prior statements in writing. I thought I could take him at his word. This was not the case. As a customer, I was shocked at how he was treating me. I asked for the contact information for the distributor and was told that he was not allowed to talk to me. I asked for the contact info for Armstrong next and was told to get it online. I contacted Armstrong directly and informed them about my claim. Armstrong informed me that they absolutely covered the cost of leveling that Ihab was trying to charge me for. I let Ihab know. Ihab?s response: I am not working directly with Armstrong, I am working with the distributor that distribute Armstrong product and I was told that leveling will not be included so that is why I had to charge you for leveling. I will talk to the distributor on monday and see what is the deal with leveling. His next response: I spoke to my sales rep today and he said that armstrong was actually including the leveling in the labor they were paying me which I didn't know about. I will have to correct the invoice I sent them before and include the leveling price there. I will let you know when they approve it. Armstrong had never even received an invoice from him at this point. He sent in an invoice for leveling costs only which Armstrong did approve ( since they cover the cost of leveling I was being charged for by Ihab). So Ihab is ready to do the install now. I asked him to cover the costs of the $292 moisture barrier glue (given the $3,000 differential in flooring product) and the cost of 6 ft. of walnut trim to even out the prior job that was done poorly on the fireplace surround. He refused and said it was better to find someone else to do the job. I agree. Ihab?s response: From this point on I have nothing to do with this job. I will not include moisture glue. I would say it's better that you find someone else do the job. You will still owe me $150 for the wood box My response: OK, you still need to send the entire labor invoice to Armstrong, which they will then assign to whomever I choose. I will make sure the amount is at least equal to your original invoice (less the cost of material). Armstrong will issue you a credit for material which you will then need to sign over to me. Once I have validated that you have done this, I will write you a check for $150. Your reviews of how you handled this process are still forthcoming, so please do not try and cheat me further. Ihab?s response: I hope this is the last email between us because in each one you are insulting me and I really don't want to do this. So my job is done here. I have nothing to do with your claim. I sent Ihab several more e-mails asking him to agree to sign over the credit for material from Armstrong. Since Chic Floors initiated the claim, Armstrong has to issue them the credit. He refuses to communicate or co-operate with me further because I have ?insulted him? I have contacted the BBB but they said this is a policy issue and they also cannot force him to sign the product credit over to me. That is for small claims court to handle. At this point, I am working with Armstrong to find another solution. I do not want Armstrong to issue the credit if he refuses to communicate and sign the credit over to me. My concern is that given his unprofessional behavior so far, he will keep the credit and I would have to take him to court to resolve the situation.

Recent Review: Mike and Richard were very professional from the first meeting. They answered questions regarding my house build in 1960's that no other contractor answered with such clarity and detail. The job included refinishing the hardwood floor throughout the house, replacing the entire kitchen, master bathroom, and removin a 6 feet wall between the living room and kitchen. Throughout the entire process, they were very punctual with commnicating with me and updating the progress as they occur. Mike and Richard kept a close eye on the job and was very responsive to any questions or issues that I had on un-announced inspections of the job. Each part of the job was completed on time and within the budget from the estimate. The overall experience was very positive. I would definitely recommend them for jobs big and small.

Recent Review: We were so pleased with our entire experience with P&Q Flooring. We stopped in the store when we were in the area but were so pleased we drove across town to continue to do business with this company. They were professional and knowledgeable and weren't pushy at all. They ordered additional flooring samples for us for something we found online and were patient while we chose our product. Their prices were competitive and even when we found a slightly cheaper price elsewhere they were willing to match. We loved the customer service and wanted to give them our business so we were excited that they were happy to match price. They were great at removing our old flooring and installing new floors. The group was extremely hard-working. We would definitely be happy to do business with them again the next time we need new flooring or a rug! (P.S. they will do custom rugs based on the carpeting they have in store, but we have not purchased that at this time - something we're keeping in our minds though!)

Recent Review: It went well. The contractor provided a team of two individuals who took two and a half days. In that time they removed carpeting, prepped the floors for the wood, and installed a beautiful hardwood floor. They took with them all the old material removed. At the end of everyday they cleaned the room of sawdust and scrap wood. On the last day they helped bring some large pieces of furniture back in the bedroom. Their craftsmanship was superb. I have already made plans to have Delgado Wood Floors finish the floors in three other rooms. I highly recommend Delgado Wood Floors!

Recent Review: I had initially just started with getting estimates for replacing the HVAC system in my 70-year-old house. However, as I was reading reviews here on Angie's List, I happened to see one where a gentleman described a very similar situation where he needed his HVAC system replaced and wanted some remodeling done on his bathroom. His review was for Calahan Construction, and gave them a very good recommendation. I called Stacy Calahan and he came out to give me an estimate. I showed him the bathroom and water heater and explained what needed to be done. After getting a description of what work I needed/wanted done, he gave me an estimate that included the HVAC replacement with a new, 16 SEER Rheem system and agreed to match a price I had gotten from one of the other two air conditioning companies, so I hired Calahan Construction to do all the work that needed to be done regarding the three elements of the job. All of the workmen were very polite and professional. Since this house is so old, they ran into numerous things that were unexpected, to say the least. The walls in the house are plaster and, in the bathroom, there was a layer of plaster, then drywall, then 4" square tile going up to about 5 feet on all of the walls and the same layering going up to about 7 feet in the tub enclosure. They removed the walls all the way down to the original, hardwood studs, removed the commode and the lavatory, which was also original to the house. The closet in which the water heater was located (originally a pantry we discovered) had to be removed: walls, ceiling and floor -- after they drained the water heater and removed it. This allowed access to the plumbing behind the bathtub which was impossible to work on because the small access door was behind the water heater! Most of the water pipes for both the bathtub and water heater, and drain pipes, had to be replaced before they could rebuild the walls and floor to install a new water heater. Stacy Calahan actually had to crawl under the house twice to gain access to some of the plumbing to make repairs and replace some of the pipes. After everything was taken out, they replaced the floor, walls and ceiling, and installed sheetrock, which they then textured and painted before bringing in the new water heater. The only things left in the bathroom were the tub, the small linen closet and the ceiling. Stacy had a beautiful new commode ready to install and together we picked out a vanity and tiles for the floor and walls to match the paint colors I had selected (dark and light sage). At the same time, we picked out all the faucets, towel racks, assist bars, etc., in a satin nickel finish. I have a brand new bathroom! It is beautiful, with a non-slip tile floor that looks like stone, the walls are a lovely color that changes from tan to misty sage depending on the light. I now have an exhaust fan with a light in the ceiling and a light bar above a wonderful, large mirror over the vanity. There had never been an electrical outlet in the bathroom because 70 years ago there were no curling irons and blow dryers to use. All the bathroom hardware matches beautifully and there is a nice, 4" decorative stripe of ceramic glass in various square and rectangular shapes that ties the colors together. The craftsmen at Calahan Construction took great care when setting the tile to make sure all the tiles were precise distances apart whether on the floor or walls. They put new drywall up and textured it to match the 70-year-old plaster that remained above where the tile had been, then painted it with great care to avoid getting paint on any other surfaces. They had also put down heavy canvas from my front door to the bathroom, HVAC, and water heater which were conveniently right next to each other, to avoid tracking mud, texture and paint onto my floors. The foundation people are here right now and after they make some minor adjustments (thank goodness!), I will have Calahan come back and remove a bar between a very small kitchen (circa 1946) and a back room that was added sometime in the 1960s, then remove the mismatched flooring from a square hallway through the kitchen and the back room, build in extra counters and cabinets, after installing new sheetrock, texture and paint throughout the three rooms. Stacy has already checked the rooms and floors and is looking for appropriate flooring that can be used to tie the areas together. I will definitely use Calahan Construction to do any other work that needs to be done to update my home, because I can be sure they will do an excellent job at a fair price, regardless of how unconventional the old-hippie owner is!
