This was a very confusing experience. I have an air handler that needs to be cleaned. It has to have a lot of work done on it, and I need an AC company that will work with a mold remediation expert, because the air handler closet has to be cleaned up. I also have ducts under the floor with failing insulation, and I need to have them re-wrapped or replaced. I called on a Friday. Dustin came by on Monday. He made a wonderful impression. He was courteous and patient. He seemed very honest. He gave me a lot of tips on how to avoid spending money on things I didn't need. He gave us a rough guess as to the cost of the air handler work, and while it was a little more than a previous quote, it did not seem out of line. He said he would send someone to check the ducts so a final estimate for the whole job could be prepared. One week later, after I called to remind them, the duct guys showed up. Again, they were courteous and professional. They looked under the house and said we would hear from A-Max. Two days later, the call came. A-Max told us they would not do the work under the floor because of the "risk" to their employees. I kept asking what the risk was, so I could fix it. The man I spoke to mentioned snakes, bugs, and mold, but when I tried to get a definite answer, I got nowhere. He said some people hire exterminators to clean out crawl spaces before AC work. I said I would be happy to do that, but he said they were still not interested. They did not offer to do the work in the air handler closet, either, and under the circumstances, I thought it was best to let it drop. The area under the house is not pleasant. It has a dirt floor, and I'm sure there would be bugs, but I have been under the house many times, and I have not seen anything dangerous. I can't figure out why they wasted my time for so long, and I still don't know what's wrong under the floor, so I don't know what to do to make the job appealing to future contractors. Other companies have refused to do the duct work, saying it's not something they know how to do, but no one else has expressed eagerness to do the work and then chosen to decline. I'm disappointed, because apart from their final decision, they seemed very competent. Maybe they do better work when no crawl space is involved. EDIT: I have seen the response. Some of it is not quite right. 1. It is true that I said I did not want bug bombs going off with my pets in the house. But as I said in my review, when I tried to get an answer regarding the company's reasons for rejecting the job, I could not get a clear response. I could not get them to tell me whether bugs were the real issue. Also, as stated above, I offered to have an exterminator go in, and they turned me down. I was having a hard time finding anyone to do this unpleasant job, and I was willing to do just about anything to persuade them. 2. I don't remember saying there were "always snakes in the crawl space," but I don't doubt that we talked about snakes. I mean, hey, this is Miami. There are snakes EVERYWHERE. You can't get rid of them. The company that took the job had no problem with snakes or anything else. I told the owner about my experience with A-Max, and he was not impressed. He said they were used to dealing with whatever showed up, including angry raccoons, which bite and carry rabies. They really were not interested in the perils of the crawl space. 3. It is true that I did not ask A-Max to do the remainder of the work. That's self-explanatory.
