Recent Review: We had three companies bid on the work, and Agape was right in the middle with their bid. We chose Agape for several reasons. First, we were very impressed with the level of communication we received, both from Jerry and Becky. We had a less than satisfactory experience with the foundation company regarding communication, so this really stood out (side note - the outstanding communication continued through, and past, completion of the project). Second, we liked the ideas that Jerry shared when he was at our home, and particularly liked that he wanted to be hands-on, especially for the bathroom. It was easy to see that he truly cares about the results of their work. Third, even before we chose them, Jerry and Becky shared several sources for materials, all of which proved to be outstanding resources offering very competitive pricing and great selection (another side note - we went with Pittman Plumbing for all the bathroom materials and ProSource for all flooring and tile - both were wonderful to work with). We asked Jerry to submit a bid that broke the work down to separate components, which he did. His bid was very detailed, easy to follow, and explained all work to be performed in such a way that we understood fully what was to be done. One important note that I didn't think about initially...the bid was for labor and OBVIOUS materials only; it did not include tub, tile, flooring, paint, etc. Makes perfect sense, especially now that I see how many more options are available than what I had seen at the local home improvement stores! We did ask for a guestimate of materials cost based on general guidelines we provided and Jerry's past experience. As it turned out, this estimate was right on the money as far as cost per sq. ft. for specific materials. Once we informed Agape that we wanted to contract with them, they gave us an estimated start date and approximate time to completion. We had some time constraints for completion, and their estimate fell within these deadlines. They started right on time, and despite running into several "surprises" along the way, completed the work within the time allotted. I should have mentioned that this work (foundation and repair) was all being done as part of us moving to Austin. Because of the number and location of piers in the foundation work and our plans to move anyway, we actually "moved out" of the house prior to the foundation work, putting most of our belongings in storage and taking some things with us to an apartment close by. This actually proved to be a genius move...living through a remodel is tough enough, but through foundation work...no way. In any case, I think having the home vacant really helped Agape, as they didn't have to try and work around our daily lives. The work started on June 13, right on schedule. Initially Steve, Eric and Jason were the three guys working on our home. They were all three extremely respectful, courteous and professional. All three exhibited a strong knowledge of the work being done, and we were overall happy with the results as the project moved along. Although we were not living in the home, I did go by the house pretty much daily to check on status and how things were looking. Typically I did this later in the day, trying to stay out of the way as much as possible. I did catch a few minor things that needed attention, but overall found the guys to be very thorough. The only thing of any significance related to the bathroom. In the bathroom, the tub, shower and vanity were all matching cultured marble. We had the tub and shower replaced, but due to financial constraints decided not to replace the vanity at this time. One evening I went by, only to find the vanity with the rest of the materials taken out of the bathroom. Actually makes sense...it would stand to reason that if we were replacing the tub and shower, the old vanity, made of the same material, would also come out. Anyway, I contacted Jerry that evening, and went by the next day to find the vanity back in place, looking like it had never gone anywhere. Overall, no big deal. After the first week, Jerry was on site quite a bit, and after two weeks two other gentlemen were also on the project...Roger, and I apologize, but I cannot recall the other person's name. Of particular note, those two had obviously worked a lot together, as they did outstanding work, particularly in the bathroom. Okay...two other notes before I get to the end. First, Steve and Jerry both gave us wonderful ideas on things we could do that would add unique touches to the finished product, both of which turned out to be awesome. Steve had a great idea on how to do some of the flooring and was very proactive in asking questions and getting information before proceeding, and Jerry offered ideas on the tub and shower enclosures that turned out to really add to the finished look. Second thing...I mentioned several "surprises" above. There were a few things that turned up as the project went along. For the most part, these were things nobody short of Superman with his x-ray vision could have seen. One was the back windows. We had done a less than stellar job of sealing around the back windows, which allowed water to get in and cause damage to some of the woodwork. This in turn caused leaking into the home. What a blessing that God sent a monster rain storm (remenber that storm as we go through this unbelievable heat wave) while the guys were at the house. Had that not happened, we wouldn't have found out about the leaking until well after the fact...when it would have ruined the wood flooring. Another example was some of the less than wonderful wiring done when the house was first built. In both cases Agape did the necessary repairs with minimal effect on the finish date. There was additional expense as a result, but that wasn't a surprise. We fully expected to find some things, so were prepared for that eventuality. Overall, the "surprises" along with a few additional things we asked Jerry to do added about $3,000 to the final labor cost. It's very important to mention that the additional cost was fine and in no way a "miss" on Agape's part. These were all things that, as I said above, we would have no way of knowing about beforehand (they were basically "hidden" problems), and were all things that had to be corrected. Okay...the project is now complete, and the only thing I can say is WOW. With the exception of some things we did not address at this time (exterior paint and landscaping, replacing lighting, basic exterior concrete work) the home looks amazing...it looks like a new house, not one built in 1986. I wish I could post pictures on here, it looks so good. Most amazing of all, the bathroom looks like it belongs in a full service spa! Part of that credit goes to our son and daughter-in-law, as they chose the tile and fixtures and did something really unique with the trim in the shower, but Jerry and the guys put it all together, and they did an absolutely amazing job. I'm sure there are some things I've missed in my detailed story, but let me just say that Becky, Jerry and all the guys associated with Agape did an incredible job on our home. In all phases of this project, we found them, without exception, to be courteous, thorough, knowledgeable, excellent communicators, and understanding of our needs relating to time and cost. Their work is high, high, high quality. I should also mention that their bid (and materials estimate), were both right on...other than the structural surprises we found, they did a wonderful and thorough job on the bid. They have our Austin contact information, so please don't hesitate to ask for that and contact us if you have any questions. In the "About Us" section of their website, they say they are a Christian family owned business. Easy to claim to be Christian, but they really walk the walk. We have some additional work that we still need to do (as mentioned above), and before this project was even done we asked Jerry to consider submitting an estimate for whatever of that work he wants. I actually can't imagine the scenario where we would go to anyone other than Agape for any of our home renovation/remodeling needs. They are everything they claim to be, and more. There are other very good companies out there so I won't say you'd be making a mistake if you chose someone else. That being said, if you choose Becky, Jerry and the Agape team, I can guarantee you will be VERY happy you did!
