Reviews in Chicago to Repair Shower Door

Budget Right Handyman
2.0
We liked the people that we dealt with, but overall had a bad experience. Budget Right came to our condo and did a few minor repairs with which were satisfied (repaired shower door, re-installed curtain tie backs, replaced parts to ceiling fan, etc.) and the price was reasonable. While at our condo, the handyman said that he could repair the drywall tape that was cracking and coming off of our ceiling. We hired Budget Right to do this work and it went poorly. Two days after the iniital work was started, the repaired surfaces started to crack/come away from the ceiling. We pointed out the problems and were told that we would be their top priority to get the work done right. We were not made a top priority. I made several calls to schedule the completion of the work and days went by before my calls were returned. When I was finally given a date for Budget Right to come back and finish the work, I was told that they could not come any sooner because of other projects they had going on -- so much for being a top priority. Ultimately, we had to hire someone else to do the work. I would like to give Budget Right a good review because the people were pleasant and they did a fine job on small projects. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Budget Right because, in my opinion, they made representations about work they could not adequately perform, were untimely in returning phone calls and did not make us a top priority as they said they would.

Unfortunately we never had the work done! Called to make an appointment waited a week and when they were supposed to arrive they called and cancelled! It was Friday and they wanted to try and make an appointment for the following week I really felt this was a red flag and couldn't take the chance they would cancel again! I will never use them!

The shower door was installed poorly initially by someone else. The shower door was shifting on the screws - sometimes not latching (swinging both ways), other times, catching and trapping my tenants in the shower! Tom came out on time and promptly diagnosed the problem. He took the shower door off, recaulked and reinstalled the door with new screws so that it would not continue to shift back and forth. The tenants are thrilled to have a beautifully working shower door.

I've used this company multiple times since the summer of 2010. The office staff is very professional and pleasant. As far as the work goes, I found that the experience depends entirely on the particular technician. The first two technicians were great and did a good job on the roof repair, storm door, window repair, etc. The problem started with the shower door install. I had to have the whole shower replaced; however, the original company replacing the shower would not install the shower doors, only the base and the surround. The shower was leaking immediately, and both companies sent a technician. Each one blamed the other for the leak. Mr. Handyman's technician did some substantial caulking that appeared to hold for a few months. I've found that the base was not properly leveled by the first company, and that the doors were not properly installed by Mr. Handyman's technician. There was clearly no interest in solving the problem; rather, just doing a quick caulk job (less than 15 minutes the first time), and then taking my $108.00. The caulking looked like something a grade schooler would have done (a huge gloppy line that I was told didn't dry, because I didn't wait long enough- I waited 24 hours, despite not being told how long to wait). I have had to seek other help in fixing the doors, and luckily, the shower can be salvaged when dealt with correctly.

I have used Handyman Connection a few times before so I am familiar as to how they work. Brian was on time and within a few minutes gave me the price for the work. It took a few hours and he cleaned up very well afterword. Very good job. I will be using them again in the future.

It was a great work product. They were always available when I communicated with them. The only downside was that there seemed to be a lack of communication between the head guy and his actual crew. He didn't know what they were doing. It wasn't a big deal. There was a lack of communication on their status but their work product was great.

The first attempt resulted in the contractors shattering the door into a million pieces destroying the stationary glass door. They charged me $260 for putting up the shower rod improperly, although at the time i did not realize this. The installers- Mario and another person- blamed the glass door being that they shattered on improper tempered. I believed this because I have no knowledge of tempering. I was originally charged an addition $130 for 1 hour of clean-up in addition to $260 labor for just the rod installation. During clean-up they lost several small pieces used in the assembly of the shower door. The $130 was later refunded but with great effort on my part. The 2nd attempt to install the door resulted in the entire door assembly sliding back upon itself and the glass and hardware not aligning correctly due to a large bowing of the rod. The installers blamed the shower rod being unable to support the weight of the sliding glass door as reason for the bending/bowing. 2 hours x 2 people = 4 more hours worth of work for a total of 8 hours and the door was still not completely installed. The contractors told me to call the manufacturer to ask for a replacement part. They charged me an additional $260 for a grand total of $520 for a door that was not properly or completely installed. The manufacturer indicated that not only was the hardware not the problem but it was obvious the installers failed to follow directions and the whole assembly would require being taken down and reinstalled (i.e. redrilling holes in the tile that would be visible). Now I can't replace the tile as it's no longer available in the store where I bought it. So the entire bathroom shower area must be re-tiled. $1000's of dollars worth of damage from a door install. They also stole/lost my tools and destroyed my wife's towel in the process so that is just adding insult to injury.

I never received a response either by phone or message. It's so easy to message on Angie's List. No communication whatsoever is just a horrible sign of bad organization or manners...either way it's inexcusable.

Larry, the technician, removed old shower doors and filled in holes in tile and redid the grout in the bathtub area. I thought the tub was damaged from too harsh a chemical. However, Larry tried a different cleaner and was able to remove a film on the tub that looked like peeling. The tub looks new, you can hardly see the holes where the shower doors were attached to the tile. The tub area looks new and fresh. I would highly recommend this service as I had a great experience using themRe

I hired them to install shower doors, hang four flower boxes with eight ledges. Two workers came out, on time, ready to go. They installed the shower doors, making sure to ask just how I wanted which door to slide. Flower boxes were up on second level of house. I could not find 2 flower boxes the right length, so these guys had to put up 4. Got spacing right, compliments from the neighbors. They did a few odds and end jobs as well. Polite, careful not to make a mess and cleaned up after themselves.

Recent Review: I selected AAG since they were located close to our home and they had good reviews. Warren was great about stopping by to get measurements and was really nice about how long it took me to make up my mind. The price Warren quoted me was less than Creative Tile & Mirror and the savings from that allowed us to be able to afford the trim work.
