Chicago Vinyl Plank Flooring Installation

I never write reviews on anything but I feel I needed to share my experience with Universal Carpet. My wife and I shopped all the big box stores for new vinyl plank flooring and found just about the same products everywhere. Prices were all about the same and the products were not substantial at most. I shared my experience with a close friend and he referred me to Universal Carpet. I called and set up an appointment with Mike Larsen. He came by our house and looked over our situation and brought some sample pieces by. We talked for a while and he invited my wife and I to look at samples at his office. My wife is a picky shopper and with Mike's input and suggestions we decided on a COREtec product to install. The cost was a bit higher than big box, but not much more at all. Mike explained that he could sell us a big box item but he didn't think we would be happy. Mike was not pushy at all throughout the sale process and kept us updated on delivery date and time. We received the product and had it installed this week and we are overly pleased with the outcome!! My wife and I give two thumbs up to Universal Carpet and our rep. Mike Larsen.

We came into the project not really knowing much at all about flooring, but through our initial conversation with Ciprian, he was able to figure out exactly what we wanted. We ended up sanding and refinishing the hardwood floors in our upstairs, adding shoe moulds where they were previously missing, and ripping up existing carpet and replacing with luxury vinyl plank flooring (with cork underneath) in our downstairs. They provided a detailed quote so that we knew exactly what kind of work was going to be done, and how much everything would cost. They were also very flexible, which was important since we ran into some hiccups on our end. Since so many people were renovating their homes during the pandemic, our order of vinyl flooring from Lowes got unexpectedly delayed last minute, which meant that we weren’t ready for Ciprian to do our flooring. Fortunately, Ciprian kept communicating with us and let us know their next available date. We were extremely thankful because in the end, they were still able to get all the work done before our move-in date! We appreciate their attention to detail and think our new floors make our home look much more modern and valuable. If you’re looking for professional, high quality work at an affordable price, go with Ciprian.

Danny's team was punctual and professional. They pulled up old linoleum flooring and replaced with vinyl plank flooring in my kitchen and enclosed porch. The results were excellent and they cleaned up the site really well. Would hire them again.

I hired Simply Flooring to install vinyl plank flooring on my entire first floor. The price was fair and the they guys did a great job. Igor was a pleasure to work with and always communicated with my so there were no surprises. We ended up buying the flooring through Simple Flooring and it looks amazing. My wife and I are thrilled. I was referred to The Basement Men from a local moms group (it turns out his wife is all over promoting their company). After briefly looking at Angie's List and seeing mostly positive reviews, I went ahead and scheduled him for an estimate. We had just purchased a new house and was on a tight timeframe for several projects. We wanted carpet pulled out and vinyl plank flooring installed in the basement and Steve provided a quote at $7k. We also discussed removing a wall in the kitchen and adding some lighting as well as tile removal. His quote was $3k but was a guesstimate since he couldn't see the property in person (as we had not closed on the house). I went ahead and gave him a deposit ($2,500) for the basement floor but asked to hold off on making a decision for the kitchen. In the end, after doing some more research on Angie's list, and talking to a few people personally about their work, we decided to hire someone else for the kitchen. We just weren't comfortable putting all our "eggs in one basket" with one contractor. The day the basement work started, I gave Steve another $2,500. he indicated his installer would be done in a week and asked that I be ready to pay him in full on that day which I said would be fine. Steve was pretty upset we didn't hire him for the kitchen work and said he only gave me a great price for the basement as he assumed he'd get more work from us. He asked us if they could skip painting the quarter round finishing trim since the carpet removal was thicker than he expected and because he gave me a great price, expecting other work. We agreed to this. His contractor who did all the actual work, Martin, was great. Unfortunately, as we had other projects happening simultaneously in the house, two workers needed to access some plumbing in the basement. Martin could have worked through it but to make things easier on him and those plumbers, said he would return the next day (which I was totally okay with and appreciative of). I called Steve right away to give him a heads up to let him know the work would be running a day late. He still insisted I pay him on the original completion day even though the work wouldn't be finished. The day we were supposed to meet for the final payment, I was running very behind at the doctors office due to being pregnant with twins and experiencing complications. I asked if we could meet a day later (once the work was complete) to make the final payment and this is when Steve lost it. He was screaming at me demanding that I hold up my end of the bargain and that I was wasting his time. He accused me of not wanting to pay him. At this point of being berated and screamed at in an unprofessional manner, I was totally not comfortable paying him for a job that hadn't been completed (he even asked if I would post-date a check). He threatened to pull Martin off the job. He was completely irrational, not willing to listen, etc., and I had to hang up on him. I was still at the doctors when this phone call happened and my doctor became very alarmed as my blood pressure had skyrocketed. I ended up having my husband call him and Steve was much calmer with him. We agreed to give him 1/2 of the remaining $2k. Then the next day, when the job still wasn't complete as they needed to wait for more flooring, he asked for the other $1k. We gave him $500. Then when it was finally complete the next day, we gave him the final $500. I see now from reading other reviews here and on other platforms, that this is a familiar tactic he uses demanding payment before completed work and only shows up to collect a check. Steve did apologize but his apologies were full of excuses saying he had given us a good price that cut too far into his own margins as he was relying off other work he thought he'd get from us (and that the flooring material costs had increased which was an extra $200-$300). He also was concerned i would start bad mouthing him. Well, if you want other work, behave professionally. I also had not bad-mouthed him up to that point but I finally decided to write a review so any one else contemplating his company know what they are dealing with. I’m not even sure if some of these reviews are even real on Angie’s list. In the end, the work was nice that his contractor did, but not worth dealing with the owner of company whatsoever.

Igor was quick on the estimate, flexible on my project timing, and amazing with the install. In and out in 2 hours total. I would highly recommend them and plan on using them again in the near term.

Mike was very punctual with my short notice of flooring installation. He called immediately and offered me a price that could not be beat by other companies. The couple days leading up to the job, Mike was prompt in his responses to me about the job with any questions and concerns I had. Once at my house, Mike discussed the project in great detail and began his installation immediately. He was very flexible with the timing and stayed until the job was done to complete satisfaction. Mike left nothing behind, cleaned up well after him, and even offered to fix some flooring that was not part of the original plan of installation. I highly recommend him. He is an expert and very kind, trusting, hardworking person.

We are very happy with Universal Carpet in Elgin. We first used their service about 2 years ago for carpet and hardwood in our main level. Cary came to our home with samples and I also took a visit to their store to look at more. They have a great selection. The carpet installers were excellent! It has been two years and everything is still looking like new! At that time we also wanted to add hardwood to our den and match it up with the hardwood in the hallway. They matched our hardwood to a TEE and the installer did a phenomenal job piecing it together. No one believes it was done at different times. This year we decided to finish our basement and I went straight to Universal. I picked out carpet and shared my reservation about putting carpet in the exercise room. Cary immediately had an idea of a new Luxury Plank Vinyl product and showed me samples on the spot. I loved it! Installation was yesterday and I was SO happy to see the SAME installers and they did another excellent job! Universal is so easy to work with and their prices are excellent. Don’t waste your time looking at the big box stores… Universal beats them all the way around! Very happy in Algonquin!
