Boston Cracked Heat Exchanger Repair

I'm not sure how to compare the quality of the work versus others, but the scheduling was polite and efficient.

We worked with them through my home owner’s contract. They worked well with American Home Shield in getting the unit fixed. It was during the dead of winter and they did arrive promptly. They were very professional and did a good job. They were polite and we were happy with the work. The igniter had gone bad a couple days after the repair and they had to come back. The technician did come back to complete the repair, but was grumpy about it.

They are thoroughly professional and up to the minute in what they offer. I would hands down recommend this company. This company should be A++ is every category! Also, If you ever need an air conditioner, I would recommend getting a heat exchanger!

Great! Cracks were found on the heat exchanger and a new furnace was installed with 24 hours. Incredible service.

During the inspection, I was told my 5 year old furnace had a cracked heat exchanger and was red tagged and shut down. I had three other companies come in and say it wasn't cracked at all. Got another Sila tech back out and he confirmed a cracked heat exchanger. Insurance company came out and said no cracked heat exchanger. So, I don't know what to think. They were very professional but Im not sure they diagnosed the problem correctly

Poorly They found cracked heat exchangers and, per code, shut the system down. I asked for a quote to fix the problem, they said that would not replace the heat exchangers and recommended that I replace the entire furnace, which was less than 10 years old, leaving me in the lurch. I finally found Lohrman HVAC, who did the work under warranty.

You could not ask for a better HVAC company to deal with. They were very responsive and came out quickly to assess the problem with my AC during a heat wave. They had the replacement up and running within a day. The price was VERY reasonable considering the amount of work and new equipment required. I am able to rest assured that my tenants' comfort will be assured in all seasons. I am completely confident in the team at ECCO HVAC. Kudos to Deb Woodside for being available to answer questions and address my concerns.

Very good - they were quick - had the parts right on the truck and swapped it out. They advised us on some additional work that is needed (heat exchanger is corroding).

This was a saga. These guys were fantastic in sticking with us through an ordeal, coming out numerous times, late at night during the holidays. The furnace is 15 years old and has been pretty much trouble free except for replacing the heat exchanger 10 years ago. The company that installed it replaced it. It was under warrantee . But when we lost heat one night, I called these guys and they came right over replaced a part and we were good for day. It failed again. They came back. After some more trials it was determined that the heat exchange had failed yet again. I called the installer and they were horrible.....get a new furnace they said. I called the manufacturer (Goodman) and got a new heat exchange and gave them an earful about the installer. The guys installed the new heat exchange and we were fine after that. I can't say enough good things about these guys. The were here when we needed them, and they explained everything to me so well....I got a tutorial on HVAC. They are my forever furnace men!!!

After signing up for the Angie's List Big Deal gas furnace tune-up/inspection offered by ARS,they arrived promptly and professionally. They did a thorough inspection and fully explained everything they were looking at in simple terms that a new/non-handy homeowner (myself) could understand. During the course of the inspection, they noticed a cracked heat exchanger. The technician allowed me to see where it was cracked and explained that it was a safety issue because carbon monoxide could potentially be leaked into the home when using the furnace. The technician went through my two options (buy a new furnace system or replace the heat exchanger on the existing system) and discussed the pros and cons of each option taking into account the age of the existing system. I particularly appreciated that they did not try to pressure me into the more expensive option. We decided to replace the heat exchanger. The tech was able to provide an on-the-spot quote and then ordered the necessary parts. Another technician, who was equally pleasant/professional came later that week (on a Saturday!!!) to install. Heat has been working great since and I will definitely use ARS in the future. Total cost: $99 for initial inspection; $1450 for heat exchanger less 5% Angie's List coupon so it was approximately $1375.

Dishonest and unprofessional company. Winters sent a tech to trouble shoot why my Weil McLain Water heater had water running out of the bottom . The tech identified that the heat exchanger had a hole in the exhaust, that he had seen the issue before, and that its due to the heat exchanger running low on water. He then gave me a quote for $3000 to replace the heat exchanger (which he called Weil McLain and got a warranty claim approved), and another $500 to replace the components he said had caused the "Low water level" in the boiler. Taken back by the price, i started looking online and found several others have had this problem and that it is in fact a design defect that Weil has since corrected with a new design. NOTHING TO DO WITH $500 worth of other parts he wanted to sell. Then after several other quotes found that the replacement heat exchanger averaged $500-$750 in labor to replace, which I was happy to award to a DIFFERENT provider other than WINTERS COMPANY out of Cambridge. Avoid them if you want to avoid being ripped off.

After I had a negative experience with Sila in November (see my review 11/1/11) where one of their technicians diagnosed a cracked heat exchanger, Jake McLoughlin--the manager at Sila--took the initiative and volunteered to have the heat exchanger replaced. [My 7 year old furnace was still in working condition and providing heat but the potential danger with a cracked heat exchanger is that it may begin to leak carbon monoxide into the heated air entering a home's living area. And once cracked, it can only get worse with the potential for a carbon monoxide leak growing more likely with time.] It took a few months to get the correct replacement part from the manufacturer but throughout the process Jake was EXCEPTIONAL in working diligently to find the right part, communicating status updates, answering questions, and problem-solving. The customer service I received from Sila was phenomenal. With the correct parts in hand, Jerrod and Bobby (Technicians) came and took apart my entire furnace, replaced the heat exchanger, and put the whole thing back together in about 6 hours total. They are totally professional and competent but also respectful, polite, friendly and just great guys. They answered any question I had, worked hard in a tight, cramped space and didn't leave until they tested out everything and cleaned up perfectly. I have a 14 month old in the house and although we have carbon monoxide alarms everywhere, it's still priceless to have peace of mind knowing that our furnace is working like new with no potential for dangerous leaks. And the furnace seems to be working better and more efficiently too (blowing warmer air, heating rooms more quickly) after they rebuilt it. After an initial mis-step, Jake and Sila Air have gone above and beyond to make things right. I can not speak highly enough of a company that willingly does so much to show that it is one of the "good guys." I have already referred several people who have heating system questions/problems to them and they will absolutely be my first call in the future for any HVAC need. They have proven themselves to be trustworthy, honest, competent, friendly and customer oriented---I don't think there is anything more you can ask for in a service provider.

They inspected our furnace and concluded it was "condemned" and needed to be shut down. So we purchased a replacement through the mass save program. Upon removal the furnace heat exchange was not cracked on the outside. (Might have been on the inside?) So that was somewhat frustrating. But other than that they were good. Eric

I looked on the furnace manufacturer's website and called one of the recommended service people for a second opinion. He came out and looked at it and ran some tests and said the heat exchanger was not cracked, and the fuel ignition and flame safety were fine and did not need to be replaced.

We got several estimates and chose them based on their experience, knowledge of our system needs, pricing and Angie's list recommendation. They came when they said they would, were professional, cleaned up after themselves and worked in a timely manner. Entire installation of the 2 zone system, including electrical hookup took 2 days. We purchased a 15 SEER system for which $12,000 was very reasonable. There are energy rebates available and Cooling Unlimited will be applying for those for us.
