Reviews in Austin for Asphalt Shingle Roof Repair

Bethke Roofing & Restoration
5.0
To begin with, I contacted 4 different roofing companies (all highly rated on Angie's List). One of these used a satellite system for estimating the roof area (measured in and quot;squaresand quot;, 1 square = 100 sq ft.) Three of the four area estimates - including the one that used the satellite system - quoted roof areas that were much higher than the fourth. So I took the satellite image - which had linear dimensions on it, and added a factor for the roof pitch (basic trigonometry) and what I found was that the fourth estimate, which happened to come from Bruce Bethke, was nearly right-on. I have no idea what was up with the other three roofers' estimates (bad at math?), but they all enjoy great reputations on Angie's List... Bruce suggested that I think about a metal roof and offered me a and quot;screw-downand quot; option (where the fastening screws pass through the metal surface before anchoring in the plywood decking below) and a and quot;standing seamand quot; option (where the metal roof panels are clipped into hidden fasteners leaving the metal surface undisturbed.) NOTE: This second type of roof is referred to as and quot;standing seamand quot;, but it consists of panels with pre-fabricated seams that lock together as opposed to a and quot;trueand quot; standing seam roof which is installed with a power crimper that creates the seams onsite by bending the flat panels together. The original and quot;standing seamand quot; roof is significantly more expensive. While there may be a marginal benefit to the power-crimped roof, the pre-fabricated panels have a good track record. The more I learned about modern metal roofs, the more I wanted to go that route. They have 2 major benefits: (1) energy efficiency, and (2) durability. The metal roof (including colored metal roofs) are much more reflective of the sun's radiant energy, so they don't get as hot as asphalt roofs of any color. Furthermore, a metal roof has barely any heat capacity at all; when the sun goes down it has no stored heat to give off, whereas an asphalt roof heats to well over a hundred degrees fahrenheit, and cools down slowly - in the process radiating heat off to the atmosphere - and into the house! Since replacing my roof I have noted that the heat pump barely ever runs between 7 or 8 pm and 10 or 11 am, whereas with the asphalt roof the heat pump ran long and often throughout the entire night and morning. Because the metal roof saves so much energy it has earned an energy tax credit for the year it gets installed. The roof is also more durable - so much so that it meets a U.L. standard for resistance to wind and hail damage - which earns a discounted rate for homeowner's insurance in the state of Texas. Lastly, the roof looks great. Neighbors actually comment on it, and several have said they'd like to and quot;go metaland quot; when the time comes to replace their asphalt roofs. Once I decided to go with a metal roof, I ran the two options by a home inspector who urged me to go with the standing seam rather than the screw-down option. He said that even though it costs more initially, the additional cost is more than made up by the fact that the standing seam roof does not require screws to be inspected and replaced periodically. And the possibility of leaks is drastically reduced because there should be very few if any penetrations through the metal surface of a standing seam roof when installed properly. Back to Bethke Roofing. Bruce Bethke earned my trust with his straightforward estimate, his suggesting the metal roof, and giving me the full facts up front. He's a pretty easy-going guy besides, and I found dealing with Bruce - and his crew to be a very good experience. During the job Bruce suggested replacing the stack roof vent with louver vents on the sheer face of the adjoining wall (parts of the roof are single-slope adjoining a sheer wall face). That was done at a minimal additional cost. His suggestion improved the aesthetics of the roof, eliminated a potential water leak, and improved the attic ventilation. He even gave me some advice on a non-roof drainage issue I had - and his suggestion has proven completely effective, and much easier to accomplish than what I had originally planned. I heartily recommend Bethke roofing to anyone who needs a roof!

I called Austin All Roof to get my roof replaced and on the same day Jesse S. came out to give me a detailed estimate. Jesse S. is a quality professional and very personable. The price was reasonable based in comparison with other roofing companies and within days of meeting with Jesse S. someone was at my home working on the roof. Austin All Roof did an excellent job on my roof and I was very impressed with how professional everyone at this company was! I would recommend them to everyone I know.

Clear Choice Roofing

Company is friendly, prompt and professional. Quote was reasonable, scheduling was flexible to accomodate best weather conditions. Material delivery crew was prompt and careful. (Because they knew I was right there watching them) Installers were good except for 1 hiccup - installation crew apparently had 2 new guys who only put first 2 rows of felt on and thereafter, just shingles.(not sure why they would do this as it is not much work) Anyway, I caught them and reported to contractor via phone; He called crew lead who denied this was happening; Once I proved it, the contractor made them remove shingles and redo with proper felt; They had to pay for the extra shingles and it cost them more labor to remove and reinstall. Bottom line is watch your project like a hawk (regardless of company chosen). You never know for sure what the installation crew is like as there is generally a significant turnover; My contractor trusted the crew and did not monitor the job 100%. Fortunately, I always watch the job as there seems to be issues with every one. Overall, I'm happy with Rick and Gavin and would use Clear Choice again.

The job went very well, only taking one day, and the new roof looks great! Bill Sprauer, the project manager, was very prompt and communicative, and kept me aware of things on a timely basis. On his first visit, he was able to detect wind and hail damage, and let me know that the cost would be likely covered by my homeowner's insurance. I am grateful for that because I saved on much of the out-of-pocket costs. Bill also informed me about the insurance process. He made me very comfortable about the materials to be used, the options available, the work to be performed, and provided me a good idea of what to expect. He also gave me a fair deal on other items that I felt needed attention up on the roof. The crew did an excellent job of cleaning up my yard after they were done. Bill also met with me for a follow up visit the following day. I feel confident about going with the 30-year Owens Corning dimensional shingles, am very satisfied with their look. Overall, it was an excellent experience with Ace Roofing, and I also recommend having Bill as your PM.

Very happy with State Roofing and Josh! They were very quick to respond, came out to the house, and answered our questions. We had spoken to other companies, but we still had some questions. Josh took the extra steps to earn our business. I would certainly contact him and State again.

Hall's Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc
5.0
Chris Hall was a pleasure to deal with. He was very knowledgeable, and he stood behind his quote. He was available any time I needed to talk about the project or addressing my concerns. The competitive quote was very reasonable compared to others I received and considering how long his family has been in the roofing business in the Georgetown area, it was a no-brainer to go with Hall’s Roofing. In my opinion the project went very smoothly working with the rainy weather at the time of year. All in all it took about 2 weeks with a crew of 4 to complete the job on my 4,000 sq.ft. one level house from stripping the one layer of asphalt shingles to installing the standing seam metal roof with its numerous peaks and valleys. The roofing crew definitely knew metal roofing. They also cleaned up all around the house each day sweeping for metal pieces, nails, etc. before leaving. A bit of advice: It is probably best to not be home during the hours of work being done; the noise can get pretty loud and often the noise seemed endless. The new roof has been on for over a month now along with going through several thunderstorms, heavy rain and wind since it was installed. Very quiet inside even with the heavy down pour and I’m certain we would have lost asphalt shingles in that 70-mph wind we had; none of those issues exist with this metal roof. Also, there is no problems with cell phone reception as others have rumored in other blogs. Since the material is high quality and the installation was professionally done, there are no leaks. We couldn’t be happier with the end product and its’ appearance. We definitely made the right choice with Hall’s Roofing along with choosing the standing seam metal roof and its color.

ROOFING BY STACY PEARSON INC
5.0
We used Roofing by Stacy Pearson last time the roof required replacing. We were pleased with the price and service. Of course we called them again. Steve, co-owner, still had the same cell phone number. This is a good sign! Steve explained the differences between the different classes of roofing shingles, showed me the shingles that had blown off some roofs he was evaluating, how these differed from the quality his company NOW used. The decisions were mine to make. I like that Roofing by Stacy Pearson nails down the shingles by hand. They also use a higher grade of shingle than other roofers were using -- all for a better price than other quotes (I always check even though I knew Stacy and Steve were going to lay my roof!). They have been doing this for years and I trust them. Steve's squad came on Friday and finished early Saturday. Everything was rolled clean. I did find a couple of nails behind the shrubs, but the grounds were left so clean I wouldn't have known they'd been there! Aces! They worked seamlessly with my insurance company making it SO easy for me. My adjuster complimented Steve on the quality of the quote/invoice. My checks came quickly and without complication. I have recommended them to others in the neighborhood and will definitely use Stacy Pearson again!

Wilson Roofing
4.0
Initial estimate was $1000 over insurance company's. Wilson quickly resolved the difference but did not keep me informed. After about a month I called and initiated the repair by signing the bid. About a month later, I received a call from Ralph Wilson chiding me for not responding. After about another month, I received a day's notice that the work had been scheduled. The work was executed well (so far as I can tell) in one day. The invoice showed up about a week later, 15% higher than the agreed bid. I contacted my insurance company and started the process of getting their agreement to the final invoice. In the meantime, I received a letter from Wilson implying that I would be subject to penalties for late payment.

21st Century Painting & Roofing LLC

The finished work is flawless and looks great. 21st Century made a good first and lasting impression, start to finish. I'd like to especially acknowledge Mike, who was punctual, knowledgeable and professional. Work started on the scheduled day at the scheduled time, no excuses or delays. There was an issue of a manufacturer defect that 21st Century ultimately corrected and made whole. For their decision to make it whole themselves without waiting for the manufacturer is why I gave them an A overall. The five categories above are strong As. Results are everything. I love the new roof.

Recent Review: Representative came over for an inspection. I wasn't sure if we needed a repair or replacement. Representative said only need to repair roof instead of replacement. Company is honest and straightforward. They cut out a section of wood rotting on roof and replaced vent with special sealant. They also came by a few times to ensure the shingles were a perfect match to existing roof shingles.
