Took longer than I thought it would, but the very cold February winter snap set progress back considerably. Pool is now finished and my family really enjoys the water. If you do build a pool, my suggestion would be to go bigger rather than smaller. You won't regret it when your family comes over to swi

Anthony & Sylvan Pools

As a long time Angie’s List subscriber (15+ years), I have posted reviews of numerous companies (35+) that have provided exceptional service for my wife and I, both at our prior home in Dallas and now at our new home here in Austin. Of all the companies reviewed however, there is only one that has warranted multiple reviews and that company is Anthony Sylvan Pools (A&SP). They were one of 5 pool companies we engaged back in 2018 to submit proposals for an elevated pool and deck at our new home in the Austin hill country. Their design proposal (in 3D virtual reality (VR) form that you could literally fly around and through to explicitly see and actually “feel” what you would be getting) blew us away and in addition the cost was approximately one third less than the next best competitor. Needless to say we awarded them the contract, and construction, while challenging (e.g., as high as 10 feet above ground, huge thick concrete forms with 7 tons of steel, several hundred cubic yards of packed road base below deck, pool equipment below water level, etc.), proceeded reasonably on schedule with few hiccups. In the 2 years since commissioning, we’ve only experienced 1 issue of significance, which was a failure of the heater igniter that A&SP quickly isolated and replaced under warranty. The purpose of this review post (our 3rd) is to try to convey how thrilled we are with every aspect of our life that is now centered outdoors around our pool and deck. We along with several members of our family and friends are swimming, sunning, eating, visiting and/or view gazing poolside virtually every day of the week, which is exactly what we were hoping for at the outset. If you’re wanting to build a new pool and your area is served by A&SP, I highly recommend you give them a call to see if they can make your dreams come true as well

Southwest Destructors

The large (16'x36') in ground pool at my wife's family home was unusable due to structural cracks and outdated plumbing. We explored repairing it to its former pristine condition, but the repair bids were comparable to the cost of installing a new pool. Instead we decided to demolish and fill the pool. We were surprised to find few companies willing to tackle this project and the few landscaping/pool companies who submitted estimates were inexperienced with pool demolition. The bids we did receive seemed high. We decided to find someone who had actual experience demolishing a pool and found Ross Rathgeber (Southwest Destructors) by reviewing City of Austin demolition permit applications. He inspected the pool, made a few suggestions, and gave us a bid on the spot. We learned that with pool demolition projects, the biggest variable is equipment access. Unfortunately, our access was very limited and the Bobcat was the only equipment which could clear the small space between the house and a storage shed. On the first day, the Bobcat operator jack-hammered the pool's concrete apron, punched holes in the bottom on a 3'x3' grid, and demolished the pool sides to a minimum 24" below grade -- the rubble was placed in the bottom. The noise was incredible. On day 2, three huge dump truck loads of fill dirt were moved from the street in front to the backyard -- one Bobcat load at a time. In spite of countless trips over several hours through the narrow opening with inches to spare, there was no damage to the house or storage shed. Ross had also assured us that the 10,000 lb. Bobcat would adequately compact the fill and not leave a depression weeks later and he was correct. Finally, the crew finish graded the yard to drain properly and it was ready for the landscaping crew. When they were done, the crew spent almost 3 hours cleaning the yard and the street where the fill had been dumped. In summary, Ross was a pleasure to work with -- knowledgeable, good communications, no surprises. At his suggestion, we were able to save money by pulling the City of Austin demolition permit ourselves -- it wasn't that difficult. In spite of the fact that it was a noisy, dirty project his crew was efficient and industrious so it was completed quickly. In retrospect, we are pleased with the decision and believe we received good value for the price of the work. I would recommend this company without reservations

Fantastic. Amazingly smooth and fast. Only rains toward the end of the project slowed down the completion from being ahead of schedule. Overall finished when promised. Ryan is a pleasure to work with. We actually missed the frequent interaction with him after the project was complete. But we still call on him with questions occasionally and he remains caring and responsive. We got 3 bids on the project. Ryan was not the highest nor lowest, but he was the best at proposing what we really wanted within our budget. He would share his opinion about choices and options but ultimately made sure we were getting what we wanted. We contracted for a pool and spa with waterfall and around 500 sq ft of additional concrete patio. We are very pleased and fully recommend Ryan and Tropical Pools of Austin Texas

Allied Outdoor Solutions did an Incredible job. The quality or work and craftsmanship was excellent! I was very happy with the entire process from start to finish. The result was a new marvestone deck and a plaster and re-finished swimming pool. Both turned out GREAT!

It was a fantastic job. I really didn’t know what I needed or what would be best. Eli guided me to what was best for me. He used fence posts, fill dirt and sand. Then he spent a lot of time leveling it. Then when the pool was delivered he and his crew (including his Dad...I could see where he got his work ethic from) set up and filled the pool. It was very difficult to get wrinkles out of the bottom but they did. They cleaned off my back porch while they were filling the pool. He trimmed my trees also. Eli had a lot of equipment at his disposal that helped with the installation. I can’t wait to get in the pool with my granddaughter and stay cool this summer. I am VERY satisfied with CQS Construction! He was very fair on the price and I feel I got more than I paid for. I will use this company again

Showed up on time for estimate. Made measurements. Discussed compression criteria because of pool and recommended rebar size and spacing along with depth. Got in queue. When my turn came, showed up on time. Poured early afternoon. Cleaned up and were out by end of day. I watered for 7-10 days. Mr. Wolfe came by next day and asked of any issues and recommended watering. No issues, job well done. Work staff very polite too. Competitive pricing. Perfectly flat

It was fantastic... I have had some not great experiences with contractors in the past, but Ryan was great. He did everything he said he would do (and then some)... when he said he would do it... and for the price we agreed on up front. All of the work is quality, and I felt like he treated the process as if he were building a pool at his own house (attention to detail). Very Happ

Spicewood Stone LLC

The pool, landscaping, pergola, and fireplace design was provided by another company. Once the design was in-hand, we got several bids. Spicewood Stone gave the best priced bid and I was impressed with the owner Ed Patrick. Work started on time and proceeded on schedule. Ed was very accommodating to changes in the design. Minor changes were made at no extra cost. The one major change was done at a reasonable cost. Work was completed on schedule with high quality. They did a great job on our travertine tile deck installation. Five months later I had a few deck tiles cracked, and some other minor issues. They took care of these issues right away at no extra cost

Charles Bryant and his crew came out and removed all the old texture and replaced it making it look like new all in like 2 days. I was apprehensive about whom I might get to do this work because it was hard to find any information on line and you often hear horror stories about swimming pool related work. Our experience with Americoat and Charles Bryant was fantastic. Great guys that do a great job at what I considered a reasonable and affordable price. They first start by removing all the old cool deck texture that needs to be removed in order to ensure a good solid remaining base. They then sprayed on a thick subcoat before following up with the spray on texture. There's a real knack to doing this right and Americoat knows what they're doing. After spraying on and creating the knock-down texture they then sprayed on the color we had chosen. It looks like new and they even left me some touch up paint if for later if I were to chip or scrape the new surface. We are very happy. I also needed my pool redone and Charles referred me to Paradise Pool Plaster out of Lakeway. I will post another testimonial on them later. So far they have been fantastic too. I highly recommend Charles Bryant to anyone needing cool deck or concrete repair. There's no need for a middleman that jack's up the price for the pool company with no value add. Go direct, call Charles Bryant 512-552-7612. Chuck Orige

Anthony & Sylvan Pools

Anthony Sylvan Pools (ASP) was one of 5 different pool companies we contacted about constructing a pool at our new house in the Austin TX hill country. It was a very challenging job as our house is at the top of a very steep hill and we wanted the pool surface to be level with our attached outdoor living space, which necessitated a very high above ground pool and deck (e.g., 10-12’ at the highest point). Our ASP design consultant (Aaron Dumas) came out and over the course of ~2 hours he was able to assess our requirements/constraints/preferences and had us exploring several different pool designs in real time using pool CAD software that literally allowed us to fly around each design in 3D virtual reality no less. This enabled us to “see” and quickly home in on a dynamite design that was vastly superior to the 2D design diagrams submitted by the other bidders. And once the design was settled, Aaron posted a 3D “fly around” video on YouTube that enabled us to “whet” (pun intended) the appetite of friends and relatives, all of whom are now thoroughly enjoying our completed pool. Construction of the pool was very challenging to say the least (e.g., huge thick forms with tons of steel, several feet of road base material under the decks that had to be brought in and compacted, pool equipment that had to be safely and reliably installed below water surface level (critical for us since our only source of water is a 31K gallon rainwater collection system), etc.). Our construction manager (Dewaine Hill) visited our site on at least a weekly basis and kept us apprised of progress with regular email reports, and he was always prompt in getting back to us regarding any questions, issues and concerns we had. To make a long story short, Dewaine turned Aaron’s awesome pool design into a reality that we are enjoying literally every day. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the very cordial and responsive people behind the scenes at ASP. Our scheduler (Bianca Garcia) was always cool, calm and collected through several record Austin rain delays, and she never failed to respond in a timely and professional manner to my numerous texts and emails (even over the weekends no less). And the ASP senior manager over all Austin pool construction projects (Colin Schneider) made sure that our project stayed on track, even coming out to the house on occasion to assess a couple of issues first-hand and help to get them quickly resolved. In summary, we are absolutely “thrilled” with every aspect of our ASP pool and last but certainly not least, given that the cost was approximately 30% below the bid of the next closest competitor, we feel that the value is truly incomparable

Our project began earlier in the year with our hiring of a different contractor to build our pool, deck and driveway. After having numerous issues with that contractor, we received a letter stating that he went out of business and would not be able to complete our project. Ryan Marsh and his team were already on our project site building our pool for the other contractor. I spoke with Ryan about our situation and the fact that we could not leave the pool in the state that it was in. Ryan understood our bind, and with his guidance, he helped us get the pool project back on track and finished within the original budget. Impressed with his professionalism and experience, I asked him to oversee the rest of our project: deck, pergola, sidewalk, driveway, and column posts. Ryan agreed, providing me with his credentials (unsolicited) and patiently working with us to transfer our bank loan from the original contractor to him. Once complete, Ryan stayed on task and on budget finishing the project exactly to my stringent specifications. What my wife and I didn't realize at the time was even though the original contractor walked out on us, it was the best thing that could have happened. During the completion of the project under Ryan's guidance, Ryan provide many more options regarding pool finishing, pool equipment, sidewalk stone, concrete finishing techniques, etc that the original contractor never provided. We upgraded our pool's finish from plaster to pebble tec, installed a new retaining wall and capped it with flag stone, installed better drainage, upgraded our pool equipment, and installed high-quality low-voltage lighting. All of this we would NOT have received with the original contractor. The end product is fantastic, and I finally feel we have a completed home. The only concern I have about Ryan is Ryan's drive for perfection: while applauded and even sought after, it can be a little overzealous. A few times I would catch Ryan working on our pool making micro-adjustments for better flow or trying to get our new pool cleaner to be more efficient. While the end product is nothing short of perfection, I did catch myself saying, "You really don't need to do that..." a few times. :) During the project's construction, I learned more about Ryan and his history. He is originally from Washington state and comes from a family of concrete specialists. He spent a considerable part of his career in Arizona building pools under a master pool builder. After coming to Texas, Ryan was immediate appalled at the poor quality of pool construction from local builders and the lack of codes that Texas has regarding pool building/concrete work. I found out that while he was not required to follow any of these rules on my project, he applied them anyway -- things like minimums depths for concrete pads for deck posts, required minimum steel, etc. All in all, I trust Ryan and would definitely have him work on my home again. A quick update as of Nov 16th, 2014: Since the pool's construction, Ryan worked with us to finish our landscaping and update our pools facade and some of the equipment. First, Ryan connected us with David's Landscaping Group who did a fantastic job finishing the area around the pool and the rest of our house. Then Ryan and David redid our weeping water wall feeding into the pool (Ryan didn't like the way it was originally). Now, it flows really well and looks amazing. Finally, Ryan replaced our blow-side pool cleaner with a suction-side pool vacuum, which works MUCH better. Because Ryan did the original plumbing for the pool, it has very easy for him to do. I can't recommend him higher
We had a great experience with Trinity Pools. Donna Bacca was very personal and gave great detail from the start to the finish. The pool was finished ahead of schedule and I would highly recommended.
Rob Scott did an excellent job in recommending the surface and color for the pool. Cen Tex started sooner than expected which was very impressive, and not our usual experience on such projects. He is following up with us on securing two circulation "eyeballs" to fit our 48 year old pool. The workers were non-stop in chopping off the old plaster and preparing the surface for the Pebble Tech surface. The next day the high tech vehicles started appearing and by the fourth day the pool was being filled. The resulting appearance of the pool was every bit of what we were hoping for. We have already given Rob's contact information to a friend who is looking for a reliable company to resurface his pool
So far, so good. The salesman came to my house twice, spoke to my wife and I at length about what we wanted in a pool. He produced a high-end CAD model of the design and a 3D "fly-through" video of the design. He spray painted the outlines of the pool and deck on the grass and has provided helpful insight on the considerations we should be making with our pool decision. I haven't decided to use the pool builder yet, but so far, the service has been commendable. I will update this report if we follow through on the build

I reached out to DLG in early April based on a recommendation from someone in the neighborhood. I had one phone conversation with David and the rest of our interactions were through e-mail. He was very responsive in the initial e-mails and answered all of the questions I had. After getting a few other quotes, I decided in early/mid-May to move forward with DLG. Because I was going to be out of town for June and I think summer is the busy season for them, he said it "looks as if the end of July into August is going to be our start date at this point". Fast forward to early-July, I checked in to make sure he hadn't forgotten about the job and to see if he had a more concrete (pun intended) start date.. I never heard back so about two weeks later, I checked-in again. He said they were slammed and he would have a better idea within the next week or two. He was still within the original "end of July into August" so I was fine with that. In early August, I checked in again. This time there was no response. At this point, I've resigned myself to not getting a patio from DLG. Until one day in mid-August, I receive an e-mail that says "I am going to get someone over there this week if we can wrap up our current job that we are working on." YAY! Now I'm excited again. I'm going to get my patio!! And then nothing. No one ever stopped by. So I'm back to thinking I'm not getting a patio from DLG and starting to think about moving on. And then in early September, I receive another e-mail: "I can get the slab done tomorrow. Will that work?" I respond within 20 minutes with a "YES!" asking what time they'll be starting the work. No response. By noon the next day, there was still no response so I think it's safe to assume there will be no patio. And this is where I ended the madness. When I let David know I wouldn't need his services anymore, he apologized for the inconvenience: "I don't ever like to lose work over scheduling, but sometimes it is hard to break off and complete a small job." He also provided a recommendation for someone he thought he could do the job. As I read through the Angie's List reviews, I see lots of A reviews. I also see costs that are in the 10's of thousands of dollars associated with these reviews so my $860 job was nothing. (Although a well done $860 job would result in recommendations to neighbors/friends/family and potentially more work from me in the future.) I just wish DLG would've said from the start that it was too small of a job. I could've had the patio done by now (by someone else) and be enjoying my new grill
